VIII, 212 p. with 11 leaves (1 double) illustrations in collotype ('Lichtdruck'), reproductions of the highly detailed naturalistic drawings by Allers, and many pictures in the text, some in colors. All edges gilt. First edition. Very good copy with only some minor wear and discoloring on the cover. The fine upper cover illustration with gilt lettering is in nice condition with only a little spotting. Almost unfoxed, an excellently preserved copy. Descriptions of places in and around Naples written by Allers himself, but also by Walter Trede and Alexander Olinda, extensively illustrated with detailed sketches and grand views by Allers, an exceptionally talented artist who exhibited a lot of joy in his work. Apart from Naples, Camaldoli is treated, next to Ischia, Baiae, Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi, Paestum and Castellammare. Fine sights of Pompeii and many portraits of worthy men and beautiful women, and loving depictions of Italian types.

Hier en daar een vlekje of een papierfoutje, maar verder een heel net exemplaar. Heiligenleven (in het Italiaans) van St. Catharina (Fieschi) van Genua (1447-1510), die overigens pas in 1675 zalig werd verklaard en in 1737 heilig. Met achterin het boek de geschriften van deze heilige. Wellicht uit de boekerij van Emile Erens afkomstig.

In het Italiaans. Herdruk. Rug wat vuil, de naakte vrouw in het emblematische drukkersmerk is deels met oude inkt doorgestreept. Met enkele (17e-eeuwse) notities en onderstrepingen, maar verder een heel net exemplaar. Dialoog van de goddelijke voorzienigheid van Catharina van Siena, voorafgegaan door een inleidende brief en de heiligverklaring door paus Pius II (1461), en gevolgd door enkele contemporaine teksten van vrienden van Catharina. Dit is een typografisch mooi, renaissancistisch boek, grotendeels gezet uit een prachtige cursieve letter. Wellicht uit de boekerij van Emile Erens afkomstig.

Venice, Stamperia Pinelli, 1675 (&) 1670. Simple later cover. 46, (10) p. In the middle eight pages of blank paper are sewn in with notes from the years after 1730 and from ca. 1901. Some wear and stains. On the title page the signature of a former owner, H. Labouchère, and the inscription 'Brussele, li 2. Gennaio 1901'. The book is richly annotated in the same hand as the Italian inscription from 1901. "Veridic prophecy of all the supreme pontiffs until the end of the world made by San Malachy, Archbishop Armacano. (&) Notable observation on the election of the New Pontiff Clement X. And on the Verification of the Prophetia of San Malachy 'De Flumine Magno'." Famous mystification. Predictions attributed to the Irish twelfth century saint St. Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. This is a list of 112 popes with cryptic descriptions, which first came to light in 1587. The list was seen as falsification early on, because the descriptions up to 1590 (Sixtus V) are quite correct, but those after that are generally not. This 'prophecy' was probably intended as an original attempt to get a certain cardinal, Girolamo Simoncelli, to the papal throne. But this 'fake old news' was not successful, another one was chosen. Nevertheless, the prophecy has been revived countless times with each election of popes, especially in modern times, because the current pope would be the last according to this list! The second publication in this 17th-century edition is an attempt to link Pope Clement X to the description 'De Flumine Magno'. The author tries to make it plausible that this expression refers to the river Tiber. Labouchère is a noble family that had international branches (British, Dutch) with important functions in banking and diplomacy, and the pastimes that grow from a financially well-watered soil like that. But which "H. Labouchère"?
