Handwritten letter to 'Dear Miss Heywood'.
17.9 x 23.0 cm. Pasted on an album leaf. Signed 'John Tenniel' and dated 'March 21./ 1905.' on paper with letterhead of Tenniel’s house, 10, Portsdown Road, Maida Hill in London. 29 lines. On the reverse of the album leaf some unclear signatures of later date. Tenniel (1820-1914), the illustrator of Alice in Wonderland, in his younger years was friends with Miss Heywood’s grandfather. She sent him a portrait of her grandfather’s as an old man, and Tenniel thanks her very friendly (with 'abject apologies for unavoidable delay'), although he didn’t recognize the friend of his youth. At the end mention of the appreciative tributes of the emperor of Germany and the princess Louise (the Duchess of Argyll, or Louise of Prussia?) are mentioned.
