And from Thence Continued by Several Prorogations to the Fifteenth Day of November, 1739. An Act for the More Effectual Securing and Encouraging the Trade of His Majesty's British Subjects to America, and for the Encouragement of Seamen to Enter Into His Majesty's Service.
London, John Baskett, 1739. pp 131-143. 31cm. Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliff for Henry Stevens, Son, And Stiles in three quarter burgundy morocco and marbled boards, with gilt filets and with titling in gilt on the spine and two raised bands; teg. War was declared against Spain on October 23, 1739, and this act enables the naval war against Spain for interfering with American trade, "which has been unjustly interrupted , on pretences altogether groundless and unwarantable ..Ships and vessels belonging to British subjects have been seized and confiscated, the sailors have been injuriously imprisoned, and babarously treated, and the British Colours have insulted in the most ignominious manner..And whereas his Majesty has been obliged to declare War against the King of Spain, his Vessels, and Subjects to revenge the Injuries and obtain ample Satisfaction for the Wrongs done his subjects; now with the carrying on of said war with Vigour.." he calls upon seamen to become "serviceable to His Majesty, and for the effectual securing and extending the Trade of His Majesty's Subjects to America and elsewhere.." A fascinating document from a war that eventually merged with the War of the Austrian Succession. Slight rubbing of edges and toning of paper; otherwise in very good condition. [N51526].
