Once closest confidant of Swedish King Charles XIV, then his bitterest enemy, never silent, soon predictably indicted and condemned for crime de lèse-majesté, Crusenstolpe, undaunted, even then continued his publishing, taking revenge with this voluminous and very unflattering portrait of Charles XIV. On the first page he quoted a telling reference from the French monarchy, where according to absolutist theoretician Claude de Seyssel everyone had always been free to speak about the king as they wished. Unimaginable that modern Sweden would be worse off than ancien régime France (code N-42)

Stockholm. 1840–1844. 319+400+324+430+417+652 pages., Beautiful half leather , Ambitious project by Sweden’s most prolific and most scandalous author of the 19th century, Magnus Jacob Crusenstolpe. Having experienced the wrath of the authorities before, he decided prudently not to indicate his name. However, tempering his acid pen when describing the history of Sweden’s royal house of Holstein-Gottorp, which would also have been prudent and perhaps more effective, he did not decide to do. Thus Crusenstolpe left later neutral observers, like librarians, with quite a dilemma: whether to categorize Morianen as romance or as history. (code N-42)

Nice rebound, Having seriously angered the Swedish royal court, Crusenstolpe thought he might repeat this success, and dedicated his pen to other European courts: Prussian, French, Austrian. Western readers being traditionally less reticent about ridicule of Russian court politics than any other, especially his four volumes of Russian court histories gained popularity in German translation. His approach, combining political and cultural history with base court intrigue, may be closer to the mark than much official historiography. In any case it offers a very lively picture, which in this original edition can be enjoyed in Crusenstolpe’s own Swedish style. (code N-42)

Stockholm Tryckt hos N.H. Thomson 1847, 396 pp., half-leather binding, No author indicated but he is of course Crusenstolpe, Sweden’s most famous 19th century pen. What was indicated on the title page, however, were the words of Pigault-Le-Brun: “La mère en permettra la lecture à sa fille”. It must have been the one and only time Crusenstolpe showed any care whether his writing would cause scandal (code N-42)
