Tiny loss of paper of rear boards at join to spine where brown cloth spine has 3/4" missing at tail.Hinging fragile at this point trhoughout book, but tight above this point. Further 3" above sunned, rest of spine just very lightly rubbed at edges, top edge more so. "Fiction" written in ink on first pastedown, top corner.Thick art paper, rough cut.Pages lightly stained in triangular pattern from bottom edge to hinge (see image). Text bright and clean.Tissue guarded frontispieced depicting President Lincoln with young soldier and soldier's brother. A wonderful, moving story which was the basis of several very early films.Scribner published a magazine in which this was first published in 1906, before publishing further in book form, of which this book is the actual genuine first book. 47pp. + 7pp blank end flysheets. Good/No D/jacket.
