This issue with front art by Andy Warhol; two brief statements by Abbie Hoffman and Rick Rubin, along with the announcement of the death of the Yippies and the birth of the Youth International Party; news on the trial of the Black Panther 21 in New York, theater, etc. GOOD condition. This issue with a lengthy interview with Black Panther Party leader Bobby Seale, in which he discusses issues with Stokely Carmichael, the ideology of the Black Panthers especially in relation to Marxism, etc. A lengthy article by Abbie Hoffman "Fuck the Vanguard, Power to the People," etc. Usual movement, music, drug and counterculture musings, etc. present. Connections was a paper from Madison, Wisconsin, published from 1967 to 1969 and harnessing a militant college campus energy to discuss the sometimes violent confrontations that occurred between police and protesters in Madison (see Insiders History of the Vietnam Era Underground Press, Part 2 for previous information). This with a collage by d.a. levy, "More Fun..With Your Guns;" an article on rock music; a piece on the Oakland 7 being freed, etc. GOOD condition. Tabloid newspaper format. 4 pp. With an 8 ½ by 11 inch sheet of paper stapled to the front cover, providing a news flash on Patrick Chenoweth, reprinting a New York Times article declaring him free. A few black and white illustrations. A newsletter issued by the United States Servicemen's Fund, an organization created to promote free speech in the US military. It organized events and exhibits in protest of the Vietnam War and supported many GI underground publications. This issue with an article the court-martial proceedings against 8 of released POWs, indicating that those against the war, were being held by the US military and were accused of misconduct while in a North Vietnamese prison camp. Another article looks at the case of Airman Frederick Stubbs, a Black soldier charged with fighting and sent to a military "reeducation camp." The article alleges that while there, he was framed for a fight, and now faces a court martial and hard labor, with the piece alluding to racism in the US Armed Forces. A short piece discusses the bombing of a bookstore by a member of a white supremacist group. The store had hosted a group of Black soldiers against the Vietnam War. GOOD+ condition. Horizontal and vertical fold creases present. Minor wrinkling. Light toning. Good .

This includes discussing the extreme repression tactics used by military police and other police; the racial tensions that allegedly led up to the riots; the inequality in pay and treatment between Black and white members of the military, etc. GOOD condition. We have another issue #18, designated as being published in February, but with 8 pages. Black and white illustrations and photos throughout. Avatar was founded in 1967 by Mel Lyman and his followers at the Fort Hill Community, or Lyman Family, a counterculture commune (or cult, depending on perspective) in the Roxbury area of Boston. Besides publishing the usual counterculture perspective on local and national news, the newspaper also served as a mouthpiece for Lyman's and the Fort Hill Community's philosophy: a quasi-religious and mystical thought drawing on Lyman's unique view of astrological, spiritual and occult history. Mel Lyman originally gained fame as a folk musician. This issue published with a short poem by Mel Lyman, as well as an essay on the new age; short pieces appearing to be by various members of the staff or Fort Hill community, mostly reflecting a new age sort of introspective philosophy.
