A collection of 19th century sheet music collected in a single bound volume, featuring work by Strauss and Beethoven, among lesser known composers. Titles include: Home, Sweet Home by J.H. Slack (NY imprint); Tripping thro' the Meadows by G.D. Wilson (with cover portrait of a woman); Sweet Spirit, hear my prayer by Brinley Richards; An Etude for piano by A. Goria and other piano music. GOOD condition. Moderate fading and scuffing to the covers, with minor soiling, spotting and staining. Heavy scuffing, bumping and wear along the extremities and spine, with the leather very worn. Los Angeles, New Way Enterprises, 1969. Tabloid. Side folding tabloid format. 52 pp. Rear cover a full page, color advertisement for a concert featuring Illinois Speed Press, Taj Mahal and Dillard and Clark. Somewhat psychedelic art by poster artist Cathy Hill. A later issue of this pioneering underground newspaper, known as the Freep. Established in 1964, the paper was known for its coverage of the counterculture movement and radical politics, as well as its strong anti-Vietnam War stance. Financial and staffing troubles led to its eventual demise in 1978. This issue with a lengthy piece and interview on Black politicians in white suburbia (suburban Los Angeles); a piece on a Black community tribunal held by the Black Alternative, a community group in LA drawing on a coalition of the Black Panther Party and other organizations. This tribunal found guilty various Black leaders in the area of dereliction of duty in the service of the Black community. Also present is a section on modern Black poetry in light of Black Power, with two full pages printing poems by Bob Kaufman, Carole Gregory, Stanley Crouch and others; a full page article on the Byrds and a full page interview with members of Led Zeppelin, etc. GOOD condition. Moderate general browning. Paper slightly brittle. Minor wrinkling along the extremities. Horizontal fold crease present. Mailing label and address stamp, with handwritten note, on the upper front cover. Good .
