Full calf leather. 208 pp. An educational work teaching algebra to school age students, by English mathematics teacher, John Bonnycastle. Provenance: signature of Thomas R. Hazard, dated 10 mo, 17. 1809, on the first endpaper. This may be that of noted American author, abolitionist, social reformer and advocate of Spiritualism, Thomas R. Hazard. If so, it would have been from around the time he was twelve years old. We have not independently verified the signature or established clear provenance to his ownership. GOOD condition. Leather somewhat scuffed and worn, with heavy scuffing along the hinges. Date stamp from 1953 also on the first endpaper, with two small owner's signatures on the title page. Some offsetting/glue staining along the edges of the first several pages. Some toning and scattered foxing in the interior. Good .

No other markings found, with a handwritten slip to a Vermont University laid in. Moderate browning along the extremities, with general fading, minor soiling and a few small stains. Moderate to heavy chipping along the extremities, with some associated creasing and a few minor tears. Interior solid, with a brown stain affecting the top right corners of the pages. Good .

General fading to the pages with a few very minor tears in the fore edge margins of the pages. Fair .

Warsaw and New York, Lwow/G.E. Stechert, Publisher, 1937. Wraps. Printed wraps. 347 pp. A rather technical monograph on integrals and mathematics, originally published in Poland in 1930. Stanislaw Saks was a Polish mathematician who focused on theories of functions and functionals. Despite his success and acclaim by colleagues, he never achieved professor status at the University of Lwow. At the outbreak of World War II Saks joined the Polish underground. He was caught by the Gestapo in 1942 and executed. Provenance: this came from a collection of books where some were owned by mathematician James Andrew Clarkson, although there is no indication of ownership in this book. GOOD condition. Heavy fading, mostly along the extremities. Moderate chipping, wrinkling and small tears along the edges. Good .
