[Film, Pop Culture, Music, Ephemera] Morales, Noro (musician); Del Rey, Maria (singer)
A Gay Ranchero Soundie Film
No Place, Standard Pictures Corporation. Unbound. No place or date, circa 1941. 16 mm film in canister. Reel measures approximately 3 5/8 inches across. A soundie for the song "A Gay Ranchero" by Noro Morales, a pianist and big band leader originally from Puerto Rico. Different sources provide differing information on this particular soundie. UCLA indicates this was produced in 1941 by Minoco Productions. Another source indicates Malina Luba was the singer, although, Maria Del Rey is listed in the opening credits of this reel. Soundies were essentially the first music videos, offering several minute films to accompany a song. Some featured actors and musicians who would later become famous, and some featured African-American artists at a time when they received little to no exposure in music or film. We cannot play test this, so we cannot offer grading other than the film appears to be in good condition, and does not have any vinegar type smell. Minor scuffing and wear to the metal canister. Good .
