Blue printed wraps. 22 pp. Offprint from the April-June issue of the China Quarterly, providing a history of the political career and political philosophy of Liu Shaoqi, anticipating him as a successor to Mao Zedong. While Shaoqi was a prominent leader of the Communist Party in China, dissent between him and Mao caused him to be jailed and tortured in the late 1960s, serving as an example to others. He died in 1969, due to several years of harsh mistreatment. GOOD condition. Moderate uneven fading and browning to the wrappers, with minor soiling and a few small stains. Interior toned. Good .

With a frontis portrait. Drawn mostly from journal entries and letters, this work reflects primarily the spiritual life of Susan Howard, with the last 50 plus pages chronicling her trip from New York to Buenos Aires, by way of Monte Video. Howard recounts life aboard the ship and in South America, as well as her time in Buenos Aires, where her efforts would be spent engaging in a missionary school. In GOOD condition. Slightly EX-LIBRARY with a few faint library stamps on the inside front cover and title page. Call numbers on the title page. No markings on the exterior. General fading, minor rubbing and minor soiling, a bit heavier to the rear cover. Corners bumped and worn. Head and foot of the spine pulled, with minor loss of cloth. Previous owner's signature on the title page. Minor to moderate scattered foxing throughout. Good/No Jacket.
