Act of Agreement Broadside. Maritime Document
No Place, No Publisher, 1853. Unbound. Act of Agreement broadside. Single sheet, printed on both sides. Appears dated 1853. Measures roughly 22 by 19 ¾ inches. An agreement between the master and seamen of the ship Meridian, captained by John Manson. With twenty-eight handwritten names of the various crewmembers. Some appear to be in their own hand, although most appear written in the same hand with "his 'x' mark" written in between the first and last names, presumably the marks of those who could not sign their own names. This also provides their stations on board, as well as monthly wages and advance wages paid. Nine crewmembers apparently deserted in Liverpool, England (deserted LP written next to their names) with three others perhaps deserting before setting sail. The Meridian was to leave Boston in July of 1853 and head to St. John, New Brunswick before sailing to Liverpool. Manson captained Meridian from 1851-54 and was from the South Shore area of Massachusetts, perhaps of the Barque Hill community. The ship Meridian built by Jackson and Ewell of East Boston and at 1740 tons was perhaps largest ship then afloat (see the Barque Hill Association website). The agreement outlines the terms to which the Master and seaman agree to work on the boat, including wages, etc. The reverse of this broadside bears 'An act for the Government and Regulation of Seamen in the Merchants Service' originally passed in 1790. Also included below this act is another act 'In Addition to several acts regulating the shipment and discharge of Seamen,' approved on 1840. This side bears a bald eagle emblem at the top center. In GOOD condition. Several horizontal and vertical fold creases present, with five small holes present along the intersection of the center horizontal and vertical fold creases. Several chips and tears present along the extremities, with minor loss. Minor browning to the paper, a bit heavier along the extremities. A few areas with minor foxing, with heavier foxing/browning/staining to the side bearing the printing of the act. Several small ink stains present. Good .

Handwritten Letter from a William to His Brother Henry. Written in Osage
No Place, No Publisher, 1858. Unbound. Handwritten letter from a William to his Brother Henry. Written in Osage, although no further geographical details are mentioned, other than 'West.' Dated October 23, 1858. Almost four page in length (a single sheet folded once). William describes, in long, somewhat rambling sentences his life in Osage running or tending to a lumber mill, mentioning the long hours he keeps, sawing wood, as well as several breaks in the dam at the mill and the breakdown of the wheel at the mill. The letter begins with him mentioning that he has to 'keep Batchelor's Hall tonight,' referring to his meal and putting to bed his four year old girl. He talks of selling out to his brother, although apparently declines this, and refers to the Cape (presumably Cape Cod, as Boston is mentioned) and his potential of going back home (to the Cape) for a visit. William also speculates that 'the West will be the garden of the world some day.' In general, William describes a somewhat monotonous existence of sawing and living, being matter of fact, but not complaining, offering a few details of his life in Osage. GOOD condition. Several horizontal and vertical fold creases present, with minor tearing along the folds. Some soiling, staining and uneven fading, with a few words illegible or obscured. A bit of brown paper stuck to the lower portion of the first page, obscuring a few words. $45.00--. Good .

Heck! Issue Two
Aransas Pass, TX, Published By the Author. Wraps. no date, perhaps 1955. Side stapled wraps, 8 ½ by 11 inches. 12 pp. including covers. Second, and perhaps final, issue of this zine created by Maril Shrewsbury. Although listed as a member of FAPA (Fantasy Amateur Press Association), this zine appears to have little to nothing to do with fantasy in the sense meant. Shrewsbury was a carnival worker who was tasked with painting 12 by 26 inch pictures in under 6 minutes (see Fancyclopedia 3 website). Her first issue of Heck drew heavily on carnival life and culture, while this issue only offers two pages of insight into the culture. The rest is devoted to snippets of letters, subtle sexual innuendo, etc. All said, this zine feels well ahead of its time. GOOD condition. Uneven toning and fading along the extremities. Heavy toning to the interior. Good .
