Buffalo Morning Express Advertising Card, with a Photo of Three African-American Boys
Buffalo, NY, George E. Matthews and Co. Publisher, 1891. Unbound. Single sheet, thin card stock. 6 3/8 by 4 ¼ inches. Black and white photo on one side, with advertising copy on the reverse, along with a small illustration of the printing press. A promotional trade card for the newspaper, the Buffalo Morning Express, asserting it was the "biggest, cheapest, best." The reverse touts their typesetting machinery, and maps that come with subscriptions. Of note is the front side photo, depicting three African-American boys sitting on a wall, giggling and laughing, rendering this somewhat of an anomaly (unfortunately) of a 19th century trade card, where racist stereotypes were more often than not the norm. FAIR condition. Upper left corner torn off on the diagonal. Moderate dampstaining to the whole piece. Some creasing, minor soiling and edgewear. Fair .

, Calvert Colored High School Commencement Exercises Program. Class of 1932. The Senior Class and Faculty of Calvert Colored High School
Calvert Colored High School Commencement Exercises Program. Class of 1932. The Senior Class and Faculty of Calvert Colored High School
Calvert, TX, Calvert Colored High School, Publisher, 1932. Wraps. Single sheet, folded into four pages, 8 ½ by 5 ½ inches. Cover mentions day and location of the commencement, May 23rd at the W,W.O.W. Temple. Interior lists the names of the senior class students, as well as class officers, Board of Education members and faculty members. The Calvert Colored High School was built in 1929, with aid from the Rosenwald School Fund. It was originally named Calvert County Training School. This school was a step toward providing real education to Black students in the area, as most of the students at that time attended "plantation" schools until they were old enough to work in the fields. The school offered vocational training, although apparently focusing on skills that would not conflict with occupations commonly held by white people (Texas State Historical Landmark text). The school changed its name to the W.D. Spigner High School in 1961, named after its long time headmaster. GOOD condition. Appears to have been removed from a scrapbook or photobook, as there are large areas of black paper adhered to the blank rear page. Horizontal fold crease present. Minor toning, wrinkling and creasing. Good .
