Documents Relating to the Alleged Encroachment of the "Polish Exiles" on Improved Lands in the Occupancy of Certain Citizens of the State of Illinois. January 30, 1839. 25th Congress, 3d Session. Senate
No Place, Blair and Rives, Printers, 1839. Pamphlet. Pamphlet, disbound from a larger work and lacking any wrappers issued. 8 pp. A printing of various letters and communications to members of US Congress from various settlers in the Rockford region of Illinois, regarding land grants to be given to Polish exiles (from their struggles with Russia). In the early 1830s, Congress authorized land to be selected by appointed agents to be awarded to exiles from Poland. While they would not be granted ownership, they would be able to work and develop the land, and purchase it for the lowest auction price after ten years. The lands selected in Illinois had already been settled by US citizens, who were considered squatters by the US government. This collection of documents relays their arguments as to why they were entitled to the land, alleging that the agent Klopicki was treated kindly, despite being "degraded in person by habits of intoxication." They also allege that the Poles had no intent to actually settle the land, hinting that instead they were land speculators. Eventually Congress, in the 1840s, sided with the squatters, partly due to anti-immigrant sentiment in the US. GOOD condition. Remains of binding along the spine. Some wrinkling and toning. Good .

Experiments with Cholera Virus at Manila. Letter from the Secretary of War, on the Facts Pertaining to Experiments with Cholera Virus Alleged to Have Been Made at Manila Upon Prisoners, Etc. Senate Documents No. 138, No. 145 Part 1 and 2. Three Gov Docs
No Place, No publisher. Pamphlet. No publisher, place or date. Presumed US Government Printing Office, Washington: 1906. Pamphlets, disbound from a larger work. Document 138 is 3 pp. while Document 145 parts 1 and 2 are single pages, printed on both sides of the same leaf. Document 145 is subtitled "Relative to Facts Pertaining to Experiments with Cholera Virus upon Prisoners in Bilibid Prison, Manila. Three brief documents almost glossing over the fact that 10 prisoners in Bilibid Prison in Manila, Philippines died as a result of an apparent accident, where they were injected with the bubonic plague serum instead of the anticholera serum. It also appears all ten were native of the Philippines. Document 138 contains most information, including asserting that 1000s of people were successfully inoculated prior to this incident. Document 145 relays very short cables following up on the investigation. It appears consent was not required to test on the prisoners, and that the serum was contaminated with plague virus. Criminal negligence was investigated on the Philippines, but Dr. Richard Strong was found innocent, with no stateside investigations conducted. FAIR condition. Document 138 separated along the spine, making it two individual leaves. Minor to moderate toning. Light chipping along the spine edge. A few faint wrinkles and creases. Fair .
