ANON.
The Gloucestershire Beacon [ Issue No. 1, February 1841 ]
Edward Power, Gloucester, 1841. First Edition, Softcover. Good Condition/not applicable. An extremely scarce periodical published in Gloucester. Hyett and Bazeley's 'Bibliographer's Manual of Gloucestershire Literature' ( Vol. 1, pp 170 ) records a copy of this first number and goes on to state 'No. 2 was published in March 1841. Not many numbers of this magazine appeared...Sir Arthur Helps is said to have been one of the contributors'. The editorial tone is fiercely Conservative and hurls considerable abuse at Whigs, the 'Gloucester Journal', town councils, Irish Catholics, Joseph O'Connell and numerous other targets. Articles include fiction ( 'A Sojourn in Flintshire' ), political invective, discussions re education, Parliament etc. There are items of local interest, but not many. Of great local interest is the 12 page advertising supplement ( on yellow paper ) bound in at the front. This has particularly interesting ads. for many Gloucester shops, inns and other local businesses and one classified ad. from 'A Young Lady' in search of matrimony. A clean, tight and sound copy. The original printed paper wrappers are present, worn away on the spine and worn at the edges of the front wrapper. No inscriptions. We cannot trace a copy of this periodical in any of the searchable major libraries. [12] adverts. + 40 pages. Approx. size 9" by 5.5". Quantity Available: 1. Category: Genealogy & Local History; Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 28165.
