Dvorák, Rudolf; Baki.
Baki's Dîwan. Ghazalijjât nach den Handschriften von Leiden, Leipzig, München und Wien herausgegeben, I-II. [TWO VOLUMES].
Leiden, Buchhandlung und Druckerei vormals E. J. Brill, 1908-11. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Two volumes bound in one. Pp. 304; lxxv, 306-666. Text in Ottoman Turkish in Arabic script. HARDCOVER, bound in blue full cloth with the original printed wrappers and spine nicely reproduced on special paper and very neatly laid-down. Original printed stiff wrappers of both volumes are bound-in. In fine condition. Handsome copy in excellent state of preservation. ~ FIRST EDITION. Extremely rare. The scientific study of Turkey and its history and culture in Czech lands dates back to the 19th century. Founders of this branch of "Oriental studies" were Max Grünert (1849-1929), Jaromír Bretislav Kosut (1854-1880), but especially their luminary student Rudolf Dvorák (1860-1920). Dvorák finished his doctoral studies in Leipzig and became a professor of Oriental philology at the Charles University in Prague. He is well known for his critical edition of the poetic work of the 16th-Century poet Baki (1526-1600), the greatest ghazal writer of Turkish literature whose ghazals were "minutely tooled with the care of a jeweller". Dvorák's work on Baki's Diwan is presented here in its completeness in the very rare FIRST EDITION, one of Brill's pioneering works on the subject. For the evaluation of Dvorák's translations see Ludek Hrebícek, "Preklady Rudolfa Dvoráka z turectiny", 1961. A complete bibliography of Dvorák's work can be found in "Archiv Orientální" 28/1960. Ebersolt, Jean, Adolphe Thiers.
Les églises de Constantinople. Ouvrage accompagné d'un album de 58 planches. I. Text; II. Plates. (Monuments de l'Art Byzantin, III). [TWO VOLUMES].
Paris, Ernest Leroux, 1913. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Two volumes. Folio. I. Text: Pp. vii (verso blank), 294. With 123 illustrations to the text. Title-page printed in red and black, illustrated. HARDCOVER, bound in handsome full cloth with gilt lettering-piece to spine. In fine condition, practically unused, entirely still unopened. II. Plates: Half-title and title-page on a double-page loose leaf, title printed in red and black, and 58 single sheet plates numbered I-LVII, including XIbis, loosely inserted in original portfolio of cloth and printed boards, vignette illustration to each board, upper board printed in red and black, spine panel in gilt; short splits to spine ends. In fine condition with all the fine plates in superb condition. ~ FIRST EDITION. Monuments de l'Art Byzantin, III. Jean Ebersolt, (1879-1933). A remarkable production. The exquisite plates are printed in collotype on thick, fine paper. Some are double-page. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. X-4 .
