In fine condition. A very handsome copy. ~ Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve (1804-1869) was a literary critic and one of the major figures of French literary history. He was made a member of the Académie française in 1844. The engravings are by G. Staal, after the paintings of Gouttière, Outhwaite, Geoffroy, Girardet, Delannoy, Gervais, and others. B-6 .

Johann Gottfried Bremser, (1767-1827). German born Austrian helminthologist, physician, naturalist, zoologist, and hygienists. He began work as unpaid assistant custodian of the collection of parasitic worms of Karl Franz Anton von Schreibers at the Vienna Museum of Natural History. Untrimmed, clean copy. ~ First and only Dutch edition. Very rare. Translated from the English "The Cape and the Kafirs; or, Notes of five years' Residence in South Africa", published in 1852. Alfred Whaley Cole (1823-1896) spent five years in the Cape Colony after the ship he sailed in 1841 to New Zealand wrecked off coast of Cape Town. In 1856 he left England again and returned to Cape Town, becoming a lawyer and a judge. He wrote extensively. His "Three Idylls of a Prince", written on occasion of Prince Alfred's first visit to the Cape, said to have "heartily amused" Queen Victoria and the Princess Royal. - Cat.
