Asplund, John.
The Annual Register of the Baptist Denomination, in North-America; To the First of November, 1790. Containing An Account of the Churches and their Constitutions, Ministers, Members, Associations, their Plan and Sentiments, Rule and Order, Proceedings and Correspondence. Also Remarks upon Practical Religion.
Southampton County Virginia (Richmond), Asplund, 1791. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Octavo. Pp. iv, 5-57 (verso blank), 69-70. Sewn, front plain wrapper missing. Few small stains at verso of title-page show through, bit dog-eared and dusty. In a very good condition, much cleaner than commonly seen. ~ FIRST EDITION. Good, clean unsophisticated copy, preserved entirely in the original condition. Apparently printed in sections, presumably by John Dixon, Thomas Nicolson and Augustine Davis, rival Richmond printers. Includes data correct for September 1791; some sources attribute 1792 as publishing year. The Preface is signed "John Asplund, a Sweed. Southampton County, Virginia, July 14, 1791." The present work is an abridgement of the 70 p. Philadelphia edition (Evans 26583) printed by Dobson in September 1772. In the present issue, the appendix relating to the Baptist churches of Great Britain (p. 58-66) has been omitted, and p. 57 has been reset. As is the case with the 70 p. issue, the first 16 p. are the same sheets as appear in the original (Richmond, April 1792) edition (Evans 26580), and were probably printed in 1791. Evans, however, postulates that the first 16 p. were printed by Dobson in September 1792. He accounts for their presence in copies of the (Richmond) edition of 60 p. by suggesting that Asplund substituted the corrected Philadelphia sheets for the unsatisfactory sheets of the earlier edition. Cf. the prefaces to the 1794 and 1796 editions, with title: "The universal register of the Baptist denomination." Pages 69-70 consist of "Remarks" i.e, errata and additions. (Evans, 26582; Sabin, 2222). John Asplund (1747-1807). X-3 .

Bacon, G. W.
Bacon's Large Scale Atlas of London and Suburbs. With an Alphabetical Index of Over 20,000 Street Names. With Additional Road Maps of the Home Counties &tc. [HIRAM WALKER & SONS Ltd. PUBS' DISTRIBUTION MASTER COPY].
London, Bacon, (1926). Hardcover. Royal quarto. Complete with title-page printed in red & black, Contents, Alphabetical list of districts, and all 59 double-page colour lithograph maps as follows: 7 maps of the Home Counties (I-VII); 17 Special maps and plans of London (VIII-XXIV); one Index map; and 34 four-inch scale maps (sheets 1-34). Plus an alphabetical index to over 20,000 streets. HARDCOVER, bound in the original publisher's navy blue full cloth, large decorative lettering in gilt to cover, gilt spine, sewn cloth inner hinges, thumb index; extremities rubbed, chafed, the fold-out general map bit creased and edge-frayed, few repairs to verso of maps, splits at centre fold of few maps. In a very good condition. ~ On first paste-down is the ink stamp "Hiram Walker & Sons. Ltd. / 27 Cockspur Street S.W.1." The address is then crossed out and changed in contemporary hand to "170/3 Piccadilly W.1" and the date "1926" is added by different hand. Hiram Walker started producing spirits in 1858, pioneering numerous distillation and manufacturing processes that are now industry standards. Harry Clifford Hatch (1884-1946), a Canadian businessman, acquired Hiram Walker & Sons in 1926. He merged it with Gooderham & Worts of Toronto to form Hiram Walker Gooderham & Worts Ltd. one of the largest whisky distillers in the world. The Scotland subsidiaries distributed spirits to pubs all over England. Almost all of the 4-inch scale maps in this copy were used to meticulously mark the location of every single London establishment that was on the distribution list of the distillery. Each enterprise is identified by unique number in a very neat hand in black or red ink; there are probably more than a thousand such entries. Names of some establishments are added in pencil by a different hand. Extremely rare document of the time, mapping London's pub sector and hotel and catering industry of the first half of the 20th Century. Y-1 .

(The Illustrated London News). (Frederick William Naylor Bayley, Editor; Herbert Ingram, Founder).
The Illustrated London News. Volume I, I-XXXIV (Saturday, 14 May - Saturday, 31 December, 1842). (34 ISSUES. Vol. 1, 1-34). [FIRST ISSUE, FIRST COMPLETE VOLUME, FIRST COMPLETE YEAR].
London, William Little, 1843 (i.e. 1842). 1st Edition. Hardcover. The paper's first 34 issues bound in one volume. Imperial folio. Paginated consecutively. Pp. vi, 554. Illustrated throughout. HARDCOVER, bound in the original publisher's half calf and marbled boards, spine decorated, lettered and dated in gilt, sides gilt ruled; binding rubbed & chafed in places, worn in places, restored in places, withal a good binding; few closed tears without loss at bottom of leaves. In a very good condition. Overall a well preserved, tightly bound, clean, presentable copy. ~ FIRST EDITION. The paper's first issue, first complete volume, first complete year. Published as a volume with Title, Preface and Index, in 7 January, 1843. Rare survivor, a landmark in the history of journalism. The Illustrated London News was the world's first illustrated weekly newspaper. The first issue, 16 pages with 32 woodcuts, appeared on Saturday, 14 May, 1842, marking a revolution in journalism and news reporting. Completely exceeding the publishers' expectations, it had to be reprinted several times that day; the issue went through five reprints and sold 26,000 copies; the present issue is of the fourth printing. (Issues 4-8; 10-16; 18-20; 24; 27; 28; 30; 34 are first reprint; issue no. 2 is 3rd reprint; no. 9 is 2nd reprint.) Five issues later, it was time for jubilation: "Probably, in the whole annals of Newspaper History, the triumphant success of 'The Illustrated London News' is without a parallel; it has received from the public a welcome, warmer and wider than we could anticipated even in the buoyant enthusiasm of our first ambition. From the length and breadth of the Empire we have received the most flattering testimonials." The present volume contains all first 34 issues and a Supplement. Each issue is stamped at bottom with the legendary red Tax Stamp. Also present is Issue no. 15, a rare collectible in itself, which appeared with the erroneous header "No. 10, July 16" instead of "No. 15, August 20". It is neatly corrected here by contemporary hand. Y-1 .
