Newton et des pensées de Thomas Adam [Rosine de Chabaud Latour]). Originally published anonymously in 1842 as "Narrative of a Mission of Inquiry to the Jews from the Church of Scotland in 1839" by Andrew Alexander Bonar (1810-1892) together with Robert Murray MacCheyne. This is the story of a mission set by the Church of Scotland in 1839 to investigate the condition of life of the Jews in Palestine. Bonar and MacCheyne, both clergymen, were joined by Alexander Black (1789-1864), Professor of Divinity in Marischal College, Aberdeen, and by Alexander Keith the Elder. It is translated by François Samuel Robert Louis Gaussen (1790-1863). The work is bound together with Gaussen's scarce FIRST EDITION of "Les Juifs évangélisés enfin, et bientôt rétablis", (The Jews at length evangelised and soon restored), published in 1843. [Drach, (David) Paul Louis Bernard.] (Rabbin Converti).
Hardcover. Crown octavo. Pp. iii, (i blank), 334. Half-title, Author's signature on verso. Text diagram. Footnotes, errata. HARDCOVER, contemporary half cloth and marbled boards, manuscript shelf-label to spine. Small institutional label tipped-in, small stamps. In a very fine fine condition (sporadic foxing). Excellent copy, practically unused. ~ FIRST EDITION. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR "P. L. B. Drach" in ink on verso of half-title ("Propriété de l'Éditeur"). Marrano Paul Louis Bernard Drach (David), (1791, Strasburg - 1868, Rome), a Talmudic scholar, Grand-Rabbi, a well-known converted Jew. In 1823 he renounced Judaism in the presence of Archbishop Quélen, was baptized, and received his first Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation. In 1827 appointed librarian of the Propaganda in Rome, an office he held until his death. Rosenthal, in his "Convertitenbilder" writes: "The conversion of this learned Jew is undoubtedly one of the most important conversions effected by the grace of God during this century in France. It became the source of salvation to many of his coreligionists." Of Drach's numerous writings, "Lettres d'un rabbin converti aux Israélites, ses frères" is the most important. Highly anti-Semitic, it incriminates the Jews as practicioners of ritual murder. "The zeal of these Rabbis goes as far as dedicating to death all those who follow the doctrine of the Trinity, and consequently all Christian Israelites," Drach writes. In his "Harmonie entre l'église et la synagogue" (Paris, 1844) he even asserts that the Jews of Damascus had been responsible for the ritual murder of the Capuchin Fr. Thomas in 1840, and that their guilt had been established beyond doubt. Exceedingly scarce. OCLC records 2 copies only. [Descriptive text Copyright Librarium, The Hague] I-5 OUT .

Dühring, E.
Die Judenfrage als Racen-, Sitten- und Culturfrage. Mit einer weltgeschichtlichen Antwort.
Karlsruhe and Leipzig, Reuther, 1881. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Royal octavo. Pp. 160. Half-title present; list of publications. Uncut in the original printed wrappers, with a publisher's catalogue printed on lower wrapper; wraps frayed along edges, corner chipped, spine neatly reinforced with matching paper. In a very good condition (old institutional stamps and label), internally very clean and neat. ~ FIRST EDITION. Signed by the author. Eugen Karl Dühring (1833-1921), German philosopher and economist. Became blind at an early age. Lecturer at the Berlin University. His detailed scholarly discussion of the Jewish question as a racial and moral one is among the most important contributions to the history of anthropology and culture in the distinction it makes between the Jews and the other Semites. Anti-Semitism refers only to the Jews, a specific branch of the Semitic race, "the most vicious minting of the entire Semitic race," and not to all the members of that race. It is Dühring's "Die Judenfrage" that has moved Theodor Herzl to study the phenomenon of the "Jewish Question" with increasing intensity, and to publish his "Der Judenstaat" five years later.
