Gaëte, Martin-Michel-Charles Gaudin, duc de.
Mémoires, souvenirs, opinions et écrits du Duc de Gaëte, I-II. [TWO VOLUMES].
Paris, Baudouin Frères, 1826. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Two volumes. Octavo. Pp. 336; 599, (1) errata. Plus folding table. Appendix, tables to the text. HARDCOVER, custom bound in uniform contemporary speckled boards, spines gilt-stamped; few creased pages, light sporadic foxing, one half-title slightly stained at edges. In about fine condition. ~ FIRST EDITION. Complete work in itself upon publication, a supplementary volume was published in 1834. [Provenance:] From the library of Comte de Schönborn Buchheim with a handsome armorial bookplate inside each volume's cover, and an armorial shelf label, printed in red, with a manuscript shelf number, to each cover. The Schönborn family is first noted as a feudal Rhenish house in the 15th century. Barons and, later, Counts, the family added the name, arms, and lands of the last Count of Buchheim by inheritance in the early 1700s. Later in that century the family divided into 3 branches: the eldest of 3 brothers, Franz Philipp (1768-1841) headed the Schönborn-Buchheim branch, based in lower Austria and Vienna. The Count of Schönborn-Buchheim was the father of Francis George (Franz Georg von Schönborn-Buchheim, 1682-1756), the Archbishop of Trier, later the Bishop of Worms, later Provost of Ellwangen. The Schönborn-Buchheim coat of arms incorporates a central shield ("escutcheon") showing a crowned lion seen from the side with one foot in the air, as if walking ("passant"), its 3 grounded feet each standing on a triangular peak (as of a mountain range), and the whole surmounted by a crown. The lion motif is repeated on the cover labels. Our set bears the same indications of previous ownership as the Smithsonian Institution Libraries' copy of Joachim Johann Nepomuk Spalowsky "Prodromus in systema historicum testaceorum" (1795 [1801 issue]), from the same library, as follows: foot of the spine with gilt-stamped shelf number; front board with an armorial paper label in the upper left-hand corner: below the heraldic image of a crowned lion passant standing on 3 peaks, is a shelf-number hand-written in ink; the front paste-down with the armorial bookplate of the Schönborn library: in a central circle a crowned lion passant standing on 3 peaks, the circle surmounted by a crown, under the circle a ribbon bearing the word "BIBLIOTHEQUE", and below that the words "De Monsieur le Comte Schönborn Buchheim" ("des Herrn Grafen von Schönborn Buchheim" in the Smithonian's copy). Handsome set with exquisite provenance. I-5 OUT .

Gesell, Silvio.
Die natürliche Wirtschaftsordnung durch Freiland und Freigeld.
Rehbrücke bei Berlin, Freiland-Freigeldverlag, 1920. Soft cover. Five parts in one volume. Royal octavo. Pp. xvi, 392. Divisional title to each part. With full-page illustrations, some in colour, and text illustrations, tables. Index, publisher's catalogue. Set in Gothic type. Bound in later stiff wrappers with flaps, typed title-labels to cover and spine; light coloured pencil annotation to 2-3 pages. In about fine condition. ~ Fourth edition. Published originally as two separate works, part I, II, III, and IV under the title "Die Verwirklichung des Rechtes auf den vollen Arbeitsertrag (.)" (1906); and part V under the title "Die neue Lehre vom Geld und Zins (.)" (1911). It appeared later as second edition in one volume with the title "Die natürliche Wirtschaftsordnung". English version, "The Natural Economic Order" translated from the 6th German edition by Philip Pye, appeared in 1929. Silvio Gesell (1862-1930), German businessman. Born in Belgium, Gesell emigrated to Buenos Aires, where he successfully engaged in business. In 1914 he returned to Germany and became, five years later, finance minister in the short-lived government of Bavaria. His ideas in "Die natürliche Wirtschaftsordnung" are a reaction against Marxian socialism. Keynes, in his "General Theory", gives much space to the book, and expresses his belief that the future would learn more from the spirit of Gesell than from that of Marx. (Mai, P. 95). I-4 OUT .
