In about fine condition. ~ FIRST EDITION. Complete work in itself upon publication, a supplementary volume was published in 1834. [Provenance:] From the library of Comte de Schönborn Buchheim with a handsome armorial bookplate inside each volume's cover, and an armorial shelf label, printed in red, with a manuscript shelf number, to each cover. The Schönborn family is first noted as a feudal Rhenish house in the 15th century. Barons and, later, Counts, the family added the name, arms, and lands of the last Count of Buchheim by inheritance in the early 1700s. Later in that century the family divided into 3 branches: the eldest of 3 brothers, Franz Philipp (1768-1841) headed the Schönborn-Buchheim branch, based in lower Austria and Vienna. The Count of Schönborn-Buchheim was the father of Francis George (Franz Georg von Schönborn-Buchheim, 1682-1756), the Archbishop of Trier, later the Bishop of Worms, later Provost of Ellwangen. The Schönborn-Buchheim coat of arms incorporates a central shield ("escutcheon") showing a crowned lion seen from the side with one foot in the air, as if walking ("passant"), its 3 grounded feet each standing on a triangular peak (as of a mountain range), and the whole surmounted by a crown. The lion motif is repeated on the cover labels. Our set bears the same indications of previous ownership as the Smithsonian Institution Libraries' copy of Joachim Johann Nepomuk Spalowsky "Prodromus in systema historicum testaceorum" (1795 [1801 issue]), from the same library, as follows: foot of the spine with gilt-stamped shelf number; front board with an armorial paper label in the upper left-hand corner: below the heraldic image of a crowned lion passant standing on 3 peaks, is a shelf-number hand-written in ink; the front paste-down with the armorial bookplate of the Schönborn library: in a central circle a crowned lion passant standing on 3 peaks, the circle surmounted by a crown, under the circle a ribbon bearing the word "BIBLIOTHEQUE", and below that the words "De Monsieur le Comte Schönborn Buchheim" ("des Herrn Grafen von Schönborn Buchheim" in the Smithonian's copy). Handsome set with exquisite provenance. I-5 OUT .
