HENRY ALLINGHAM WITH DENNIS GOODWIN
Kitchener's Last Volunteer. The Life of Henry Allingham, the Oldest Surviving Veteran of the Great War.
Edinburgh, Mainstream Publishing, 2008. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo 9781845964160 Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Kitchener's Last Volunteer. Introdcution by HRH Prince Charles. Henry Allingham is the last British serviceman alive to have volunteered for active duty in the First World War and is one of the very few people who can directly recall the horror of that confilict. In this book, he vividly recaptures how life was lived in the Edwardian era and how it was altered irrevocably by the slaughter of millions of young men in the Great War and by the subsequent arrival of the modern age. Henry is unique in that he saw action on land, sea and in the air with the Royal Naval Air Service - which would later be amalgamated into what we know today as the RAF. He was present at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 with the British Grand Fleet and went on to serve on the Western Front, where he encountered the many horrors of air warfare. He befriended several of the young pilots who would lose their lives, and he himself suffered the privations of the front line under fire. Widowed and living alone, in the twenty-first century Henry was befriend by Dennis Goodwin, who enabled him to tell his remarkable story to a wider audience through a BBC documentary. Driven to teach today's generation about the tratgedy of war, in recent years, Henry has become a hero to many, meeting royalty and receiving numerous honours such as the Legion d'honneur - France's highest military accolade. This book is the touching story of an ordinary man's extraordinary life - one who outlived six monarchs and twenty-one prime minister, and who represents a last link to a vital point in our nation's history. Illustrated. 240 pp.

D-Day. June 6, 1944. The Battle For the Normandy Beaches, The Climatic Battle of World War II
London England, Pocket Books, 2013. 2nd Impression, Binding: Cloth, Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo 9781471130472 Hardback Hardback. D-Day. On the basis of 1,400 oral histories from the men who were there, bestselling author and World War II historian Stephen E. Ambrose reveals for the first time anywhere that the intricate plan for the invasion of France in June 1944 had to be abandoned before the first shot was fired. The true story of D-Day, as Ambrose relates it, is about the citizen soldiers - junior officers and enlisted men - taking the initiative to act on their own to break through Hitler's Atlantic Wall when they realised that nothing was as they had been told it would be. This book is the brilliant, no holds barred, telling of the battles of Omaha and Utah beaches. Ambrose relieves the epic victory of democracy on the most important day of the twentieth century. D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climatic Battle of World War II
London, United Kingdom, Pocket Books, 2002. 5th Impression, Binding: Soft Cover, Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0743449746 Paperback They wanted to be throwing baseballs, not hand grenades, shooting .22s at rabbits, not M–1s at other men. But when the test came, when freedom had to be fought for or abandoned, they fought. They were soldiers of democracy. They were the men of D–Day. When Hitler declared war on the United States, he bet that the young men brought up in the Hitler Youth would outfight the youngsters brought up in the Boy Scouts. In this magnificent retelling of the war's most climatic battle.
