CHANOFF, GOOD AND
Into the Heart
Garage g a5+ white, Simon & Schuster. 1991. (ISBN: 9780671728748). Hardcover, 1.3 x 6.5 x 9.5 inches. One Man's Pursuit of Love and Knowledge Among the Yanomama. Hardback with dustjacket - 1987 - good condition - - used books, secondhand books, for sale, out of print books, hard to find books, second-hand books, college books, student books, nonfiction, non-fiction books delivered world wide. This is an extraordinarily human account of the Yanomama Indians of the Amazon rain forest, a people who have in the past been rather dehumanized by anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon's Yanomama: The Fierce People (Holt, 1968). Good began working with them in the mid-1970s, living in their communities, studying their lives, and eventually marrying a Yanomama. He does not avoid discussing the violence they are capable of wreaking upon one another, but he sets it within the broader context of love, kindness, and respect that permeates most of their interpersonal lives. This is a personal rather than scholarly account, but it provides such powerful counterpoint to the woefully unfair but widely circulated accounts of the Yanomama that it should be made available everywhere. Used: Acceptable.

MONAGHAN, JOHN
Social and Cultural Anthropology: A Very Short Introduction
orange grey a5 less garage white text, Oxford University Press, USA. 2000. (ISBN: 9780192853462). Paperback, 7 x 4.5 x 0.6 inches. If you want to know what anthropology is, look at what anthropologists do. This Very Short Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology combines an accessible account of some of the disciplines guiding principles and methodology with abundant examples and illustrations of anthropologists at work. Peter Just and John Monaghan begin by discussing anthropology's most important contributions to modern thought: its investigation of culture as a distinctively human characteristic, its doctrine of cultural relativism, and its methodology of fieldwork and ethnography. They then examine specific ways in which social and cultural anthropology have advanced our understanding of human society and culture, drawing on examples from their own fieldwork. The book ends with an assessment of anthropologys present position, and a look forward to its likely future. Paperback - 2000 - good condition - - used books, secondhand books, out of print books, hard to find books, for sale, second-hand books, college books, student books, nonfiction, first edition, exlibrary books sold, signed copies, non-fiction books delivered world wide. 0-19-285346-5. NJOGU, KIMANI
Culture, Performance and Identity. Paths of Communication in Kenya
UK, Twaweza Communications. 2008. (ISBN: 9789966724410). Paperback, green A5. Paperback in good condition. Our lives, which are mainly structured according to repeated and socially sanctioned modes of behaviour suggest that human activity is a performance; it is an activity undertaken with a consciousness of itself. We are always aware that someone who has certain expectations about us is watching. In order to satisfy the expectation we behave accordingly. Quite often we are conscious of projecting identity - in politics, in our homes, places of worship, on the street, among colleagues and so on. But how does this happen? This book brings together essays which cover a number of key areas: Gender, Disability, Media, Sports, Literature, Religion, Land and Youth, Music. Through an examination of the situation in Kenya, the essays opens new ways of understanding forms of local, national and global identity. Good.
