Spine label torn off and small tear about 2 inches above the bottom of the spine. Edges rubbed and front hinge cracked; however, the pages remain attached inside. Pages lightly age-toned andna bit brittle with age. Small stains at top of pages 195-197 have caused the pages to stick together; one small hole torn in page 195 as well. Large tears in pages 227, 319, and 353. Additional spotty stains elsewhere in the text, but most pages have no stains. Some library stamps inside, but otherwise, text unmarked. Bound volume of a scarce 19th-century Catholic newspaper, lavishly illustrated with numerous black and white engravings. This is volume 14, containing all weekly issues from July 3 through December 25, 1886. Features Church-related news from around the world (much of it dealing with anti-Catholic actions), advertisements for products of Catholic interest, and stories for the instruction and amusement of adults and children. The Oct. 30 issue has an illustration of the Statue of Liberty on the front page; the statue had been dedicated two days earlier. Contains illustrations by German artist Johann Georg Meyer (a cat and an octpous, pages 88 and 89). Other miscellaneous illustrations of Biblical, nature, and family scenes. Measures approx. 16.25" x 11.5. Fair .

Pages lightly age-toned and foxed, but otherwise, text unmarked and binding tight. Examines the state of the Catholic Church in the years following the Concordat of 1801, which restored some freedoms of the Church in France during the Napoleonic era. The author is anonymous, identified only as "un ancien vicaire-general" (an old vicar-general). Text is in French. This copy belonged to Archbishop John B. Purcell of Cincinnati (1800-1883), whose signature is on the title page. Good .
