Antimanifestum: Hoc Est, Refutatio Solida Manifesti Palatini de Septemviratu Translato
1640. Disbound. 86p. DISBOUND. A book that lacks its covers and spine, but is otherwise complete. Pieces of binding thread still attached to the spine. Title page lightly toned and very faintly stained. Top corner of title page is chipped off, and the first several pages have bent bottom corners. Underlining in red pencil and occasional marginal notes, all by a very early owner. Still easily readable, albeit fragile. Rare tract in Latin published during the Thirty Years' War. Frederick I, King of Bohemia, was the Elector Palatine (as Frederick V) until 1623, when an Imperial edict removed him from the position and replaced him with Maximilian I of Bavaria. Frederick died in 1632, after which his widow sought to have their eldest surviving son, Charles Louis, installed as Elector Palatine. This tract attempts to refute the claims of Charles Louis to the Electoral Palatinate; however, he would ascend to the position in 1648 according to the terms of the Treaty of Westphalia. OCLC #159905366. No author, place, or publisher stated. Fair .

[John Baker], The State of the Palatines for Fifty Years Past to This Present Time
[John Baker]
The State of the Palatines for Fifty Years Past to This Present Time
London, For J. Baker, at the Black-Boy, 1710. Disbound. 14p. DISBOUND and INCOMPLETE. A pamphlet in FAIR condition, lacking the covers and with the title page detached. Edges worn and pages browned with age. LACKS the final leaf (p. 15-16). Quite fragile but nonetheless rare, OFFERED AS-IS. A British pamphlet exposing the brutal treatment of the Palatinates (states within the Holy Roman Empire) at the hands of the French during the Nine Years' War. In the wake of the Franco-Dutch War, Louis XIV sought to protect France's interests through territorial expansion at the expense of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. Pressing a claim to the Palatinate, Louis XIV pursued a scorched-earth policy which devastated the states' Protestant inhabitants, who had already suffered greatly for generations due to the Thirty Years' War and subsequent religious wars. Ultimately, the "Sun King" would not acquire the Electoral Palatine, and Europe would soon be plunged into the War of Spanish Succession, which was underway when this pamphlet was published. Fair .
