Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk
Manchester, Pemberton's of Manchester. Paperback. 96p. A softcover booklet in very good condition. Edges lightly worn and tanned; small chip in spine. Otherwise, text clean and binding tight. Undated; circa 1930s. Canadian ex-nun Maria Monk's memoir about sexual immorality and infanticide in Catholic convents is considered by scholars to be an anti-Catholic fabrication. Her story was first published just two years after the Ursuline Convent Riots, the peak event of the mid-1800s anti-Catholic fervor in North America; ex-convent narratives were a popular genre at the time. The Devil in the Church: His Secret Works Exposed and His Snares Laid to Destroy Our Public Schools. A History of Romanism for Nineteen Hundred Years; Its Opposition to Our Public School System and Effect Upon Our People and Government. Including an Account of Priestly Misrule in the Philippine Islands As Made Public by the U.S. Government
Beaver Springs, Pennsylvania, American Publishing Company, Patriotic and Popular Books and Bibles, 1902. Third Edition. Hardcover. 500p. A red decorated cloth hardcover book in very good condition; mild exterior wear but pages are clean and binding is tight. This is an anti-Catholic, nativist publication that presents Catholic identity as a threat to patriotism. It includes a special section on alleged Catholic tyrany in the Phillipines, which would have appealed to readers in the early 1900s as a current issue of public interest. Spain sold the Philippine Islands to the United States in 1898 at the end of the Spanish-American War, and American military forces clashed with Filipino nationalists to take control of the territory between 1899 and 1902. As a former Spanish colony, the Philipines were largely Catholic, and this book characterizes the Catholic clergy as immoral and anti-American influences on the Filipino people. Very Good .
