The history of gibbeting.
Barnsley : Pen & Sword History, 2020. Hardcover. Dustjacket. x, 150 pp. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : as new. - The history of gibbeting is the story of one of Britain’s most brutal forms of punishments, the hanging of criminals in a body shaped metal cage as a warning and as a form of justice. From the folklore of live gibbetings to the eerie historical documenting of this weird post-execution tradition, The History of Gibbeting examines how and why we dealt with murderers and other serious criminals in this way. The book uses case studies through history and takes a look at how the introduction of the Murder Act shaped our relationship with gibbeting for years to come, and how we as a society demanded the most shocking post-mortem treatment of criminals. Whether gibbeting was ever a successful deterrent, it is still a fascination today and gibbet cages remain on display in museums all over the country. ISBN 9781526755186.

Purdon, Liam O. & Cindy L. Vitto (eds).
The rusted hauberk: feudal ideas of order and their decline.
Gainesville : University Press of Florida,1994. Orig. cloth binding. xxii,338p. Index. Condition : fine. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : as new. - The metaphor of the hauberk, a tunic of chain mail that rusts over time, shapes and unifies this investigation of medieval culture. These essays question the very rubric of the feudal ideal, demonstrating that in historical and legal practice, and in imaginative and didactic writing, a breach often exists between ideal and practice. The authors challenge the notion of a fixed historical construct, emphasizing instead that all constructs must be elastic to allow historical perspectives to enlarge. Quirk, Joel.
The anti-slavery project : from the slave trade to human trafficking
Philadelphia : University of Pennsylvania Press, 2014. Paperback. vii,332 pp. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : as new. - It is commonly assumed that slavery came to an end in the nineteenth century. While slavery in the Americas officially ended in 1888, millions of slaves remained in bondage across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East well into the first half of the twentieth century. Wherever laws against slavery were introduced, governments found ways of continuing similar forms of coercion and exploitation, such as forced, bonded, and indentured labor. Every country in the world has now abolished slavery, yet millions of people continue to find themselves subject to contemporary forms of slavery, such as human trafficking, wartime enslavement, and the worst forms of child labor. The Anti-Slavery Project: From the Slave Trade to Human Trafficking offers an innovative study in the attempt to understand and eradicate these ongoing human rights abuses. In The Anti-Slavery Project, historian and human rights expert Joel Quirk examines the evolution of political opposition to slavery from the mid-eighteenth century to the present day. Beginning with the abolitionist movement in the British Empire, Quirk analyzes the philosophical, economic, and cultural shifts that eventually resulted in the legal abolition of slavery. By viewing the legal abolition of slavery as a cautious first step-rather than the end of the story-he demonstrates that modern anti-slavery activism can be best understood as the latest phase in an evolving response to the historical shortcomings of earlier forms of political activism. By exposing the historical and cultural roots of contemporary slavery, The Anti-Slavery Project presents an original diagnosis of the underlying causes driving one of the most pressing human rights problems in the world today. It offers valuable insights for historians, political scientists, policy makers, and activists seeking to combat slavery in all its forms. ISBN 9780812223248.

The Democratic Transition in Nepal.
Lanham : Rowman & Littlefield, 2000. Orig. cloth binding. Dustjacket. xv,382 pp. Library stamp. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : very good. - This comprehensive analysis provides a thorough and balanced treatment of the emergence of a democratic polity in Nepal. Drawing on original survey data, Ramjee P. Parajulee analyzes the role of external forces in the transition process and the barriers to consolidating democracy. The author argues that a favorable external environment and the changing policies of outside actors influenced the perceptions and behavior of internal political forces, thus contributing to democratization efforts. Yet despite positive signs, the consolidation effort faces political, economic, and sociocultural roadblocks that will continue to hamper Nepal's development. ISBN 9780847695775.

Rehse, Birgit.
Die Supplikations- und Gnadenpraxis in Brandenburg-Preussen eine Untersuchung am Beispiel der Kurmark unter Friedrich Wilhelm II. (1786 - 1797)
Berlin : Duncker & Humblot, 2008. Paperback. 676 pp. (Quellen und Forschungen zur brandenburgischen und preussischen Geschichte, 35). Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : very good. ISBN 9783428125913.
