A Collector's Vision, and the success of the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2016, Global by Design. Chinese Ceramics from the R. Albuquerque Collection, showing highlights from the collection, the fourth volume documents the most significant new acquisitions made by the collector after the publication of the first 3 volumes. Bringing together passion and an informed vision, the collector, Renato de Albuquerque, has created one of the most coherent and comprehensive collections of Chinese ceramics made for export markets. Encompassing works from the Tang (618-907) to the Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, the collection is central to the understanding and study of Chinese export art. Comprising a selection of 206 pieces or groups of pieces, this boxed, hardcover book brings new research on the intercultural connections that are central to the collection. As with the previous volumes, the fourth book is written by Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, one of the world's foremost experts on Chinese export porcelain. Her careful research expounds on the collector's choices and the complex, multi-layered history of Chinese earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Published in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies, this work supplements what has been described as "the best work yet written on Chinese export porcelain" (The Economist, 2011). The fifth volume of The RA Collection is the first in the series to depart from ceramic to other fields of cross-cultural art. The RA Collection of Chinese Enamelled Copper. A Collector's Vision focuses on pieces made of enamelled copper which were produced in parallel with Chinese porcelain during the 18th and early 19th centuries. As its predecessors, this book illustrates highlights from the collection, works of art representative of the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures in the modern era. Each piece has been carefully selected by the collector, Renato de Albuquerque, ensuring that the overall collection can serve as a source for the study and furthering of knowledge in the field. New.

Tankards and Mugs: Drinking from Chinese Export Porcelain
Jorge Welsh Research & Publishing, London. 2016, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780955743276). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover; 352 pages with 431 colour illustrations; 23.5 x 29.7 cm; 2.4 kg; LIMITED EDITION OF 500 COPIES.; The first comprehensive study on Chinese Porcelain Tankards and Mugs, with pieces from 23 museums, 18 private collectors and 3 dealers, from around the world.; Tankards and mugs are vessels that illuminate many aspects of social, economic and art history. This book focuses on Chinese export porcelain tankards and mugs dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Drinking is a pleasurable and social activity, enjoyed by most cultures of the world. In China, alcohol was used for feasts, festivals and religious ritual as early as the Neolithic age. In the West, beer, cider and porter were drunk on both convivial and solemn occasions. Vessels used to contain drink were often treasured containers, and time and care was spent on their manufacture and decoration. They needed to be practical, functional utensils, but also beautiful. When Chinese porcelain reached Europe an ideal match was made. Top quality wares were highly regarded luxury items, and they included tankards and mugs. This book is illustrated with 197 Chinese porcelain tankards and mugs, each catalogued and referenced in detail. They range from blue and white to delicately enamelled vessels, some emblazoned with western designs and coats of arms. The introductory essays discuss the history of a vessel that played an important role in society, stimulating design and decoration while also being symbolic of kinship and harmony. New/No Jacket.

The same author, Maria Antónia Pinto de Matos, has written The RA Collection: A Collector's Vision published by Jorge Welsh Books in 2011. Following in the tradition of the previous volumes of The RA Collection of Chinese Ceramics. A Collector's Vision, the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2016, Global by Design Chinese Ceramics from the R. Albuquerque Collection, loans to other temporary exhibitions and conferences based on the collection, this volume is the result of Renato de Albuquerque's quest to continue to share his collection and the research undertaken on it with the wider public. Comprising a selection of 55 pieces or groups of pieces, this boxed, hardcover book brings to light new research on the inter-cultural connections that are central to the collection. The book draws on the combined expertise of Maria Antonia Pinto de Matos, Ana Moas and Ching-Fei Shih, to shed light on the collector's choices and the complex intersections between enamelled copper and porcelain production in 18th century China. Published in a limited edition of 400 numbered copies, this work is a further supplement to what has been described as 'the best work yet written on Chinese export porcelain' (The Economist, November/December 2011). New/No Jacket.

A Thousand Auspicious Meanings: Chinese Porcelain Teapots from the Sapientia Collection for the Domestic Market (Volumes I & II) (Chinese Edition)
Jorge Welsh Research & Publishing, Lisbon/London. 2022, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781838216344). Hardcover. Book, Chinese text; Hardcover in slipcase (2 VOLUMES); 594 pages, 626 colour illustrations and 2 black & white illustrations; 312 colour illustrations; 23,5 x 29,7 cm; 4.4 kg; Volume One - Introduction: Teapots for the Domestic Market; Volume Two - Teapots for the Domestic Market.; This two-volume book focuses on the artistic, cultural, and historical motifs of Chinese porcelain teapots made for the domestic market, and will ultimately be part of a four-volume set, the third and fourth volumes to be dedicated to teapots made for the export market. The collection was started by Franco Cutrupia in 1981, who, soon after arriving in China, became fascinated by the beauty, variety of shapes, and decorative motifs of Chinese porcelain teapots. Later he was joined in his passion for Chinese porcelain by his wife, Pauline Ngai, a Chinese history major and author of this book. The book examines the auspicious motifs that appear in Chinese porcelain decoration, explored through those found on the teapots from the Sapientia Collection. Through the study of these motifs, the author opens up a fascinating insight into Chinese culture and the interpretation of the meanings and significance of each motif. It goes much further than simply cataloguing a collection, exploring deep into Chinese culture and its long and intricate history. The first volume offers a comprehensive introduction, providing a wide perspective on the development and production of containers for a variety of drinking liquids and later teapots, from the Neolithic era through to the 1980's. The second volume discusses 193 of the Sapientia Collection of porcelain teapots, made for the domestic market, covering a period from the 18th to the 20th century. The author, Pauline Ngai, deciphers each motif, their embodied stories, auspicious meanings, and symbols, transforming these treasured objects into sources from which to better understand Chinese culture and history. This book, the result of many years of original research, is a serious reference work and encyclopaedic in interpreting those scenes and auspicious symbols originally intended for the Chinese public. As such it is a valuable resource for all those studying or interested in the subject. New/No Jacket.
