Netsuke motifs encompass mythical beings, vernacular deities, characters from legends and everyday life, foreigners, animals and plants. Consummate mastery of the carver's craft in a great variety of materials, among them wood, ivory, horn, coral, tortoiseshell and lacquer, distinguishes these miniature works of art. The masterpieces created by famous carvers like Yoshimura Shûzan (1700-1773) and Ohara Mitsuhiro (1810-1878) shaped aesthetic developments in this art medium. In this book, 112 selected objects from the Trumpf collection, one of the major netsuke collections in Europe and exhibited at the Linden-Museum Stuttgart from the 13th of April to the 19th of November 2000, are presented. WATSON, WILLIAM (EDITOR)
The Great Japan Exhibition: Art of the Edo Period 1600-1868
Royal Academy of Arts, London in association with Weidenfeld and Nicolson Ltd, London. 1981, 1st Edition. Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 22.5 x 28.9 cm; 1.4 Kg; 365 pages with illustrations, including 120 in colour; Signs of wear on the exterior. The interior is in very good condition.; This is the catalogue of the major exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1981-82 covering the fine art and decorative craft of the age of the Tokugawa shoguns - the rulers of Japan from 1615 until the restoration of imperial rule in 1868 - the Edo period. Edo art reflects the artistic standards and the social life of a richly varied nation whose progress was making obsolete the feudal forms of its earlier history and whose energies and invention laid the foundation of its subsequent meteoric development. For most of the Edo period Japan was virtually sealed off from any contact with foreigners and the complex culture which developed was quintessentially Japanese. The 250 years before Japan's emergence as a modern nation constitute a cultural achievement of enormous breadth and invention which has not hitherto been presented even in Japan on such a large scale. The exhibition is staged with the full support of the Japanese government and constitutes the greatest enterprise of its kind ever contemplated in Japanese cultural relations with foreign countries. The catalogue illustrates all the items in the exhibition, over 120 of them in colour. They include paintings, prints, books, laquered objects, ceramics, metalwork, armour, sculpture, textiles and some items from the short but brilliant Momoyama period which preceed the Edo and bequeethed so much of its tradition. There are introductionary essays on the historical, political and artistic background to the period by leading British and Japanese scholars, as well as a glossary and a comprehensive bibliography. Unprecedented in western publications, the catalogue will be an authoritative and beautiful record of the richly varied art of the Edo period. Very Good/No Jacket.

Decorative Arts of Japan
Kodansha International Ltd, Tokyo. 1964, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dustjacket); 262 pages with tipped in colour plates: 29 (ceramics), 27 (metal works), 25 (lacquer ware) and 26 textiles; 27 x 35 cm; 3.078 kg; Used book with signs of wear, namely a small stain on the hardcover cloth (only seem if the dust jacket is removed). Minor signs of wear on the interior. The hinge is slightly loose, but the binding remains firm. The dust jacket has tears and minor chips and is now protected with a clearcover.; For us in the West, the category "Fine Arts" refers almost exclusively to painting and sculpture. The rest we relegate to the status of 'minor arts', crafts and curiosities. In China and Japan this has not been the case, and a famous Oriental painter has also been a calligrapher, a potter, a maker of lacquered objects, etc. And well-known Japanese potters occupy an exalted position in the history of Japanese arts as do the most important painters and sculptors. The book presents a full account of these often neglected, but by no means minor, Japanese arts - ceramics, lacquer ware, metal work, textiles. The plates have been selected to give a coherent account of those arts, and to illustrate in full colour the best available examples of all important types or styles in their proper historical context. The full explanations of all the plates have been prepared by outstanding authorities in their respective fields. The general introduction, by Professor Chisaburoh F. Yamada, a recognized scholar of both Western and Far Eastern arts, has been designed to bring Japanese and Western aesthetics principles to bear on the subject, and thus render it meaningful in terms of world art as a whole. Decorative Arts of Japan is a necessary addition to any collection of books on Japanese art. Fair/Dust Jacket Included.
