Very good condition overall.; In this beautifully illustrated book, Walter Denny presents a new vision of one of the best-known and most internationally renowned Islamic artforms: Iznik ceramics. Covering both Iznik pieces de forme and the famous Iznik tiles that decorate Ottoman imperial monuments, Iznik integrates the entire spectrum of Iznik production, both tiles and wares, and the broader artistic tradition in which it originated. Denny begins with a description of the particular nature of Islamic art under the Ottoman empire, as well as the methods of the craftsmen who worked under the imperial auspices. He then examines the links between the court style of Istanbul and the ceramic ateliers in Iznik itself, and the crucial role of the dominant styles of the golden age of Iznik ceramics and their most famous creators, Shah Kulu and Kara Memi. The book showcases the array of motifs - floral, vegetal and figurative - used on Iznik wares, looks at the relationship between non-Muslim communities and the Ottoman empire, and closes with an examination of the rich stylistic heritage that Iznik ceramics have given to Western art. Lavishly illustrated in full colour throughout, this is a panoramic overview of a spectacular and refined artform. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

CARSWELL, JOHN
Iznik Pottery
Interlink Books, Massachusetts. 2007, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781566566575). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 17.5 x 24 cm, 0.4 Kg; 128 pages with 83 colour and 25 black-and-white illustrations; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior. Interior as new.; Some of the greatest glories of Ottoman art are the luxurious ceramic vessels and splendid tiles made to decorate newly founded mosques and palaces by the Turkish pottery at Iznik (ancient Nicaea). Their designs combine purely Turkish motifs with elements ingeniously transposed from imported Chinese blue-and- white porcelain. Over time a more subtle painterly style and complex palette were developed, culminating in the brilliant combination of cobalt blue, turquoise, olive green, magenta and red, which became the internationally recognized Iznik hallmark. Iznik ceramics were highly prized far beyond the Ottoman empire, and although the factories had passed their peak by the late seventeenth century, their influence lived on through nineteenth-century European imitations by such potters as William de Morgan and Cantagalli. This fascinating introduction tells the story of Iznik ceramics through a wealth of illustrations. Most are drawn from the world-famous collection of the British Museum. Professor John Carswell retired as Director of the Islamic Department at Sotheby's. He was previously Director of the Smart Museum and Curator of the Oriental Institute Museum at the University of Chicago and was Professor of Fine Arts at the American University of Beirut for twenty years. He has written extensively on Turkish and Islamic ceramics, blue-and-white Chinese porcelain, and Islamic art and architecture. His publications include Blue-and-White: Chinese Porcelain around the World. Near Fine/No Jacket.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. 2011, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781588394354). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 23 x 28 cm; 1.9 Kg; 431 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior, namely edge wear and wear marks on front cover, spine and back cover. Interior as new. Very good condition overall.; This catalogue is published in conjunction with the reopening of the Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia on November 1, 2011.; "Since the closure of the galleries of the Department of Islamic Art for renovation in 2003, Museum staff and outside researchers have been engaged in a thorough reassessment of the collection. This work has taken the form of art-historical and scientific research. Often the results have led to discoveries about the makers, patrons, or materials of objects in the collection. This handbook, published in conjunction with the opening of the refurbished, renamed Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia, presents the latest findings on the finest works of art from these regions in the Metropolitan Museum's collection. In addition, many objects acquired since 2003 are presented here for the first time. While no experience can replace that of seeing the actual works of art, this is handbook will enhance and deepen the reader's understanding of the interconnections and particularities of the art produced from Spain to India between the seventh and late nineteenth centuries. Books such as this volume represent one of the core activities of a universal museum. Departmental curators, researchers, and consultants as well as a number of the Metropolitan's conservators have analyzed the most significant objects in the Museum's permanent collection in light of recent scholarship and have presented their findings in a manner that is of scholarly interest to experts, but is also accessible to non specialists. In the several decades that have elapsed since the Metropolitan Museum published a book dealing with the whole range of objects in the Department of Islamic Art, the study of Islamic art has expanded, as has global awareness of the regions from which the collection comes. What has remained constant is the beauty and importance of the finest works of art from the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia. many of which are presented here." excerpt from Directors Foreword, by Thomas P. Campbell, Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2011. Very Good/No Jacket.

ALLAN, JAMES; AND GILMOUR, BRIAN
Persian Steel: The Tanavoli Collection (Oxford Studies in Islamic Art, XV)
Oxford University Press for the Board of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford and the British Institute of Persian Studies. 2000, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780197280256). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 19 x 25.5 cm; 2 kg; 600 pages with black and white illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear on the dust jacket. The dust jacket has wear marks at the bottom of the front cover, on spine and on the back cover. Small tear at the top right side of the back cover. Interior in very good condition.; The Iranians were among the earliest peoples to work with iron, and steel itself plays an important part in the mythology of that country. It was favoured by Islam and appeared in the fittings of mosques and shrines as well as in items of personal religious use, such as amulet boxes. Nevertheless, the rarity of surviving early steel and the lack of depictions of it in Islamic art has contributed to its neglect relative to bronze and brass artefacts, which have found more favour with collectors and historians alike. The present multidimensional study attempts to redress this imbalance. Taking as its starting-point the Tanavoli collection of iron and steel objects, supplemented in important areas by items from the Ashmolean Museum, it combines wide-ranging historical coverage of the Iranian iron- and steel-making industries, from mining to trade, with a scientific account of the technologies involved. Medieval Arabic texts on metal- working have been examined in the light of modern understanding of the manufacturing processes, and more than 70 items from the collection subjected to metallurgical analysis. The discussion of arms and armour the one group of steel objects to have received much attention aims to unify military and art historical aspects. The authors have also attempted to clarify the English nomenclature of metal-working. All the catalogued items are illustrated and grouped by function, and the development of each type is described. An account of the work of some contemporary craftsmen carries this study of steel-making in Iran into the present century. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
