The Iznik ceramic industry was established and patronized by the Sultans' Court, and its successive stylistic phases reflect the major changes in Ottoman taste from the late 15th to the 17th century. Starting with the elaborate blue-and-white arabesque style of the late 15th century and gradually developing into the bold and vibrant naturalism of the second half of the 16th century, the decorative repertoire of the potters included a phase when Iznik pottery was influenced by Chinese Yuan and Ming blue-and-white porcelain, of which the Ottoman Sultans have bequeathed us an outstanding collection. Scientist, physician, linguist, artist, he is best known today as an early traveller in Japanm whose history of that country was many times reprinted and was required reading for travellers to the East for so many decades. Kaempfer left an enourmous amount of manuscripts, drawings and objects, which Sir Hans Sloane acquired at the beginning of the eighteenth century and made available to a sholarly public by incorporating them in his great collection, which was to form the basis of the British Museum. The most extensive literary remains of any seventeenth-century traveller were thus preserved and are today one of the treasures of the British Library's manuscript collections. Kaempfer's life now seems remote from us in two respects: the period during which he lived has became alien and in part unintelligible to us, and the exotic cultures of the countries through which he voyaged no longer exist in the form in which he experienced them. However, as Dr Haberland reveals in this scholarly account, which is based on an exhaustive study of the original sources, the life story of such a man can reveal a great deal about the culture and society in which he lived, doubly so in case of someone so curious and communicative about the wider world in which he travelled. Hans Huth investigates the development of this art from its inception as a craft in Venice to its spread throughout Europe and North America, and ultimately to the industrialization and decline in the nineteenth century. The resulting historical survey establishes sixteenth and seventeenth century Venice as the center for the earliest Western lacquerwork. Venetian influence expanded the lacquer vogue to the rest of Italy and beyond, and Mr. Huth devotes individual chapters to the discussion of other European countries and their distinctive contributions to the art of lacquerwork. The last chapter is concerned with the rise and decline of the lacquer industry and ends by pointing out certain trends, especially in Russia and Belgium, which tend to promise a limited reappearance of the lacquer craft. Although the book deals with a very specialized subject, Huth succeeds in relating it to the more general artistic, intellectual, and economic aspects of Western culture. Interior in good condition.; Volume II is signed by the author with a dedication to a previous owner.; In A.D. 1718/19, Armenian potters in Kutahya in north-western Turkey made a series of pictorial tiles for the restoration of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Never used for their original purpose, the majority were instead set in the walls of the Armenian Cathedral of St. James in Jerusalem. Painted with Biblical subjects, the original sequence has now been reconstructed, on the basis of an Armenian chronicle written on the lower margins. The chronicle itself contains interesting details concerning the spiritual and temporal fortunes of the Armeninan Patriarchate in Jerusalem in the early eighteenth century. In the first volume, bowls and dishes similarly decorated, and part of the same donation, are also described, and there is a detailed catalogue of all inscribed and dated Kutahya pottery throughout the world. The second volume uses this material to trace the origins and development of the Kutahya pottery industry from the fifteenth century onwards, and its relationship to the Ottoman pottery industry at Isnik. There is also a catalogue of the different types of Kutahya tiles, amongst the thousands used to decorate the Cathedral and its dependant churches in Jerusalem, during the renovations that took place between A.D. 1727-37. Copiously illustrated with colour and monochrome plates, text figures, and plans, the work also gives details of Kutahya tiles in churches and mosques throughout the Near East. There are also separate studies on hanging ornaments, incense-holders, Chinese porcelain tiles and Kutahya copies of them, potters' marks, and a spectrographic analysys of samples of Kutahya, Isnik, Damascus, and other pottery, including the famous Godman ewer and water-bottle.
