FERGUSON, PATRICIA F.
Garnitures: Vase Sets from National Trust Houses
V&A Publishing, United Kingdom. 2016, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781851779000). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued); 16.5 x 16.5 cm; 0.274 Kg; 64 pages.; STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC.; This exquisite gift book explores the phenomenon of 'garnitures', or matching sets of ceramic vases. From the 1650s such sets were used in elite European interiors as an integral part of the decorative scheme; displayed on chimney-pieces, cupboards, tables or over doors, they 'garnished' the interior and so enhanced the status of the owner. The fashion began in Europe using mismatched Chinese porcelain beakers and jars. As imports of Chinese porcelain ceased between 1657 and 1683, European potters at Nevers and Delft copied the originally exotic forms, unifying the sets with matching patterns, or with metal mounts. The fashion continued throughout the 1700s, with almost every ceramic manufactory producing examples, but came to its conclusion during the Arts and Crafts period, when the singular vase became the rage and many sets were broken up and dispersed. This book brings together some of the National Trust's most important sets of garnitures, showing them in their historic context. Many have never been published before, and will be an important souvenir of a unique exhibition. New/No Jacket.

MORLEY-FLETCHER, HUGO
Meissen Porcelain in Colour
Ferndale Editions, London. 1979. (ISBN: 0905746031). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 119 pages with colour illustrations; 22 x 30.5 cm cm; 0.950 Kg; Used book with signs of wear and tears in the dustjacket. The interior shows also signs of wear, with some pages slightly yellowed, but no writing or highlighting.; Starting with the experiments that led to the discovery of porcelain in Saxony, Hugo Morley-Fletcher traces the history of the Meissen factory from its foundation in 1710. He examines in detail the early porcelain and stoneware produced by Böttger und Tschirnhaus, the development of a decorative style by the Horold and Löwenfinck. The great Baroque services modelled by Kändler in 1730s are the subject of a special chapter, while another discusses the figure and animal modelling for which he was equally famous. A further chapter is devoted to the snuff boxes and other small objects which the factory produced with such skill and profusion. The factory’s greatest period, from 1710 to 1760, is naturally treated in greatest depth, but the story is continued through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and a special section discusses the early wares decorated by outside enamellers, on Hausmaler. The colour plates mainly illustrate pieces from private collections, many of which have never been reproduced before. A fine book which will appeal not only to every lover of Meissen, but to everyone with an interest in European porcelain. The author is a director of Christie’s, and is a specialist in European pottery in a European pottery and porcelain. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Signed and inscribed by the author to a previous owner on front free endpaper; The interior is in very good condition.; Those who have read Geoffrey Godden's popular one-volume Illustrated Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain will welcome this new book to extend and enrich their appreciation of British ceramics. The detailed text, arranged alphabetic by factories, is sumptuously illustrated with nearly 600 plates in colour and black and white. The author is justifiably famous for his original discoveries in the history of porcelain and in this illustrated guide yet more recent has enabled the author to identify many previously undocumented pieces, especially of the 1800-1840 period. In addition, the widened scope of the book includes products of the major porcelain manufacturers from the 1740s to the present day. Products of the lesser-known factories are also discussed and illustrated, together with typical examples of the more famous porcelain producers. Over forty factories are dealt with, with a short history of each firm and details of the major artists employed and the influence of their styles on the work of others. Much help is offered to the collector - the characteristic shapes of the different porcelains and the range of pattern-numbers are given in each case, with illustrations of manufacturers' symbols and registrations marks. Detailed captions support the main text, with a guide to the distinguishing features of each example. References to specialist works are given in each section and there is an extensive bibliography to aid further study. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

HOLGATE, DAVID
New Hall and Its Imitators
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1971, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0571084729). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 16.5 x 25.5 cm; 0.694 Kg; 112 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations.; Used book in very good condition. Minor signs of wear on the exterior. The rear of the front cover dust jacket is price clipped. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Although New Hall porcelain began to be appreciated for its artistic qualities some years ago, and in consequence eagerly collected, there is still confusion about what is and what is not New Hall. The fact that existing studies of it are either very brief or else out of date has not helped. By persistent observation, comparison and documentary research, Mr. Holgate has finally succeeded in establishing the shapes and decoration of genuine New Hall and the way it developed between 1781 and 1835; and he has reconstructed much of the New Hall pattern book. His comprehensive and discriminating study sets out in detail the whole range of the factory's wares. He has put us doubly in his debt by discussing a number of other factories that produced wares which often been mistaken for New Hall. Of special historical interest is New Hall's initial concentration on 'hard-paste' porcelain, so rare in England, and the evolution in its styles of decoration from elegance and simplicity to flamboyance and extravagance. Mr. Holgate has rendered a great service by clarifying this involved - and intriguing - chapter in the history of English porcelain making. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

DIVIS, JAN; AND ERNOULD-GANDOUET, MARIELLE
L'Art de la Porcelaine En Europe
Gründ, 1989. 1989, 3rd Edition. (ISBN: 270002124X). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, French text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 232 with a total of 146 illustrations, 82 black and white and 64 in colour; 21.5 x 28.5 cm; 1.205 Kg; Used book with signs of wear, namely some peeling of the laminated layer of the dust jacket. The interior is in excellent condition except for our logo glued to the front free endpaper and some wear marks on the rear free endpaper.; Since ancient times that men have made ceramics. Several 'images' of lost civilisations have reached our time through recovered ceramic wares in good condition or in the form of fragments. From time to time, ceramics has become one of the most refined forms of applied arts. Resulting from research and the triumph of craftsmanship, porcelain emerges as the peak of ceramics. It was in China that everything began and still today, one can only admire and handle, with much precaution and love, those admirable pieces of Chinese porcelain. Europeans shared this wonder many centuries before us. The history of the discovery of the secret of making porcelain appears to be a wonderful adventure, a quest for the beauty of its shapes and colours, with failures and at some points tainted by sordid financial considerations, but culminating in an artistic apotheosis in which Europe took part. In this rigorous and scientific book, one will experience the extraordinary adventure of the art of porcelain in Europe, mainly from the early 17th century to the early 20th century. This adventure that may be read like a romantic novel, yet is guided by accurate historical facts. Known as the golden century of porcelain, the 18th century is largely evoked in this book, which is as much a book as it is an encyclopedia of the art of porcelain in Europe for amateurs. 146 illustrations - of which 64 are in colour and 82 in black and white - chosen in an exemplary way, offer the reader an ideal overview of this art made of subtleties and more than precious due to its fragility. JEWITT, LLEWELLYNN
The Ceramic Art of Great Britain
0. (ISBN: 1850790337). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 17.5 x 25.5 cm; 1.3 Kg; 642 pages with illustrations throughout; Used book with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a permanent clearcover.; "When some twenty years ago at the instance of my dear friend Mr S.C. Hall, I began my series of papers in the Art Journal upon the various famous earthenware and porcelain works of the kingdom, but little had been done in that direction, and the information I got together from time to time had to be produced from original sources, by prolonged visits to the places themselves and by numberless applications to all sorts of people from whom even scraps of reliable matter coould be obtained. Books on the subject were not many, and the information they contained on English Ceramics was meagre in the extreme. Since then numerous workers have sprung up, and their published volumes - many of them sumptuous and truly valuable works - attest strongly to the interests and pains they have taken in the subject. To all these, who ever they may be, the world owes a debt of gratitude for devoting their time and their talents to so important a branch of study. No work, has, however, until now been entirely devoted to the one subject of British Ceramics and I feel therefore in presenting my present volumes to the public I am only carrying out the plan I at first laid down, and am not even in the slightest degree encroaching on the province of any other writer. I think I may safely say there is scarcely a manufacture - even if there be one at all - in the length and breadth of the kingdom with whom I have not frequently communicated in the progress of this work. Except in some few solitary instances I have received the information I have sought, and my inquiries have met with the most cordial and ready response." introduction from the first editio by Llewellynn Jewitt, Winster Hall, Derbyshire, November 1877. PRICE, BERNARD; NEGUS, ARTHUR (FOREWORD AND CONSULTANT EDITIOR)
The Arthur Negus Guide to English Pottery and Porcelain
The Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited, Middlesex, England. 1978, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0600371654). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 15 x 22.5 cm; 0.7 Kg; 176 pages with illustrations throughout; Used book with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a permanent clearcover.; This book is designed to be of practical assistance to the collector, with the needs of the new enthusiasm particularly in mind. Bernard Price explains the basic terms that anyone interested in the subject needs to know. The differences between pottery and porcelain are clearly outlined, as are the various processes that go to making the finished object. The development of the different styles in English ceramics is charted, as well as the most important foreign influences, in particular that of the Orient. The main English potteries and porcelain factories are described, together with their characteristic feature. This information is seldom so readily accessible in one book and will be of immense help to both the amateur and the more knowledgeable collector. The author also chronicles the life and work of Josiah Wedgwood, the man responsible for making English ceramics competitive with such great European factories as Meissen and Sèvres, and who is, of course, still a household name. Bernard Price rightly believes that products of the neneteenth century have for too long been despised and neglected. He therefore discusses a number of the most usual items from this period, such as pot lids and transfer printed ware. The text is supplemented by over a hundred black-and-white pictures as well as twenty-four in colour. Line drawings complement these illustrations, showing the reader what he must look for when identifying a piece: marks, handle-shapes, foot-rims, bases and so on. With this handbook anyone interested in pottery and porcelain is well-equipped to extend their knowledge and enjoyment of the subject. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
