Japanese Export Porcelain. Catalogue of the Collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
Hotei Publishing, Amsterdam. 2002, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9074822169). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 25.5 x 30 cm; 2.1 Kg; 263 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used book with signs of wear, namely on rear of the dust jackets that as a tiny tear on the top left side and a few scratches. Interior as new. Very good condition overall. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Japanese porcelain formed an important function in the decorative schemes of European palaces and country houses in the second half of the 17th century, the continuation of which is felt to this day, both in interior decoration and in the innumerable imitations and pastiches that have never been out of fashion. Japanese porcelain was imported into Europe from the very end of the 1650s until the late 1730s or early 1740s, which is the period covered in this catalogue. Porcelain had been made in Japan before that period, but only for about forty years. However, the export-period porcelain had an importance quite out of proportion to the size and experience of the Japanese porcelain industry, centred around Arita, in comparison with the vastly greater and more experienced Chinese porcelain area of Jingdezhen, which hitherto had been the main source of Oriental porcelain in Europe. The fall of the Ming dynasty and the accompanying civil wars in China coincided with a formative period in the Japanese porcelain industry, and Japan, previously an importer of porcelain, became and exporter, trading only with ehe Chinese and the Dutch during this period of self-imposed political and economy isolation. Renewed competion from Jingdezhen in the 1730 eventually drove the Japanese out of the export market. All this is discussed in this catalogue of the wide-ranging collection of Japanese porcelain in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford. More than 400 pieces, among Arita, Ko-Imari and Kakiemon porcelains, are included, each illustrated and discussed, with some comparative material. There are many scholarly catalogues of various collections of works of art and of archaeology held in the Ashmolean Museum. Western and Eastern, ancient and more recent, this catalogue is intended to fit into and form part of the tradition of the university. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

A Culture Revealed: Kangxi-Era Chinese Porcelain from the Jie Rui Tang Collection
Jieruitang Publishing, Boston. 2017, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780692928424). Hardcover. Book, English text with introduction and chapter titles in Chinese; Hardcover (without dust jacket); 23.9 x 30 cm; 1.75 Kg; 256 pages with colour illustrations; LIMITED EDITION; Used with signs of wear, namely on the exterior that show wear signs on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior in very good condition.; Kangxi era porcelains are vast in number and in range of style, reflecting the long and successful reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722). These high-quality porcelains of great visual appeal and historical interest have been avidly and continuously collected both in China and in the West. This book focuses on selections from the Jie Rui Tang Collection of Kangxi porcelain, formed with care and dedication over a thirty-five year period and likely the largest private collection of that era. This hard cover, high quality publication features a selection of one hundred and twenty of hundreds of superlative examples, as a means to invite discussion and appreciation for the aesthetic appeal, technical merit and enriching subject matter unique to the period. Unlike the standard Western format which groups porcelains by palette, a thematic approach has been chosen in order to present the porcelain in a way more closely aligned with its original purpose; as a gift for a significant birthday, a ritual ware, a token of encouragement to an aspiring scholar, or a means to support the legitimacy of the Emperor himself. In addition to fine quality photographs, each item is accompanied by a full description putting it into both an aesthetic and historical context. The pieces depicting narrative scenes have been deciphered by Yibin Ni, many of which were previously unidentified or misidentified. In addition, two essays have been included with the hope of encouraging a new vantage point on areas of some controversy: "Toward an Understanding of Kangxi Imperial Wares", and "Export versus Exported in the Kangxi Era". Collector's comments are also included adding a personal and contemporary facet to the venerable tradition of antiquarianism. Very Good/No Jacket.

Traders and Raiders on China's Northern Frontier
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.in association with University of Washington Press, Seattle and London. 1995, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0295974737). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 22.5 x 30.5 cm; 1.086 Kg; 203 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations; Used book in good condition. Signs of wear on the exterior, namely edge wear and some wear marks on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior in very good condition.; Catalogue from the exhibition at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, November 19, 1995-September 2, 1996.; The pastoral tribes on China's northern borders played a major role in the cultural development of China during antiquity. By the first millennium b.c. the region's inhabitants were trading in horses, wool, carpets, and fur-articles in constant demand by their settled, urban Chinese neighbors. Trade, intermarriage, and war between the pastoral tribes and the urban dwellers continued throughout the first millennium b.c. The artistic creations of the two groups reflect centuries of flourishing contact and complex interrelation-ships. The pastoral tribes favored belt buckles, chariot and harness fittings, weapons and tools in cast gold, silver, and embellished bronze. The urban dwellers preferred wine and food vessels and bronzes bells to use in elaborate rituals. Recently excavated finds from along the northern border on both sides of the Great Wall are enabling scholars to describe a plausible picture of contact, trade, and intercultural influence. Traders and Raiders on China's Northern Frontier seeks to clarify the nature of the exchanges by exploring works of art produced by these two groups. For the first time, Chinese and pastoral artifacts are studied and illustrated side by side in light of the most recent archaeological discoveries in China. Taking an unusual point of view, this book emphasizes the character of consumerism in these ancient neighboring societies and the effects of commerce and migration on the appearance and production of everyday and luxury goods. Filled with illustrations of previously unpublished objects, Traders and Raiders on China's Northern Frontier promises to be absorbing for art and cultural historians, anthropologists, and all those interested in the societies of ancient China. C.B.E (Chairman); John Ayers Esq.; Lt Colonel W B R Neave-Hill; Dr P H Plesch; Mrs. Jessica Rawson; Dr. Hugh Shire; R J de la M Thompson Esq; Paul Toller Esq. and Professor William Watson.; "This is the first exhibition devoted to Chinese jade which has been held by the Oriental Ceramic Society since 1948. In scale and scope it far exceeds that exhibition and indeed it is the first exhibition ever held in this country which has attempted to portray the full history of the subject in such detail. Chinese jades not only display extreme skill of craftsmanship but they are central to the history of Chinese culture. It was the material prized by the Chinese above all others, and therefore deserves a fuller presentation and more informed study than it has hitherto received in the West." excerpt from the foreword by Basil Gray. Destiny with Zitan: Yue Hua Xuan's Collection of Fine Qing Furniture and Items

Interior in very good condition apart from a signature on the front free endpaper. Good condition overall.; "Zitan is one of the most valuable types of timber in the world. I like Zitan, but not only for this reason. Zitan has a very slow growth cycle. It takes over 800 years before it can be harvested. It is said that Zitan can only survive with the help of heaven and earth. Perhaps because it absorbs so much spiritual essence of heaven and earth, Zitan is heavy in specific weight, dark in colour, dense in grain, smooth and subtle as jade, and is elegant and sophisticated. It is extravagant yet earnest, sentimental, yet steady. Zitan was already in short supply in the mid-Qing Dynasty. As time goes by, 'an inch of Zitan is worth an inch of gold'. To look for fine pieces of Zitan items now, one certainly needs some very good luck In the few decades of our lives, we are fortunate enough to be able to obtain a few Zitan works. Although not enough to impress the world, are recognised by experts and published in this book. We are so fortunate to be able to share them and allow more friends to enjoy the delicate craftsmanship of Zitan." excerpt from the introduction by Lee Chiu Wah (owner of Yue Hua Xuan). At no time prior to the eighteenth century did such a remarkable group of artists emerge in Japan; that the painters included in this exhibition were wither born in or pursued careers in Kyoto attests to that city's enduring cultural and economic force even a century after its political role was transferred to the new city of Edo. With sixty-one paintings on a variety of formats as a guide, this exhibition explores the distinctive personalities, biographical circumstances, and creative output of eight artists, and ultimately poses the question of why it was Kyoto in the eighteenth century that cultivate such an efflorescence of painting. The eight painters included in Traditions Unbound - Watanabe Shiko, Ike Taiga, Yosa Buson, Maruyama Okyo, Goshun, Nagasawa Rosetsu, Soga Shohaku, and Ito Jakuchu - were selected for the expressive strength and originality of their works, and for their pivotal roles as the progenitors of prevailing movements in late Edo-period painting. KATZ, JANICE: IMPEY, OLIVER (INTRODUCTORY ESSAY)
Japanese Paintings in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford
Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. 2003. (ISBN: 1854441892). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text wth essay summaries also in Japanese.; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25.5 x 29 cm.; 1.7 Kg.; 254 pages with colour illustrations throughout. Used with signs of wear on dust jacket. Interior with minor signs of wear. Good condition overall.; Catalogue from the exhibition Japanese paintings: Legend and landscape held at the Ashmolean Museum, from October 2003 to January 2004.; This volume is the first comprehensive look at the Ashmolean Museum's significant Japanese painting collection, featuring works that range in date from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, many of which are illustrated in colour. A full sixty of the finest paintings are discussed in detail individually, divided into sections based on the major schools of painting active in Japan from the Edo period (1615-1868) to the modern era. Throughout the discussion, the book highlights the work of artists outside the traditional cultural centres of Edo and Kyoto by including artworks by Nagasaki and Osaka-based artists whose paintings will be less familiar to a Western audience. In addition, the catalogue focuses on painting formats that reached their peak of expression during this era such as painted albuns and fan paintings, both of which became advantageous choices for artists working in a variety of styles. A supplementary section of about a hundred further works is included to give the reader a greater understanding of the breath of the Ashmolean's holdings. An introductory essay by Oliver Impey, Keeper of Japanese Art at the Ashmolean Museum, recounts the formation of the collection. A second essay by Janice Katz, a former Sackler Fellow, is an in-depth look at two previously unpublished painted albuns of the nineteenth century. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
