Interior with signs of wear, namely some minor wear marks throughout, such as the bottom of the front free endpaper witch shows minor wear signs on the bottom right side, and signs of have been bent in the past, tiny wear mark on the front and rear of the title page. Good condition overall.; The Collection of Chinese ceramics belonging to Dr. Carl Kempe, Ekolsund Castle, Sweden, has long since been world famous. The reasons are many. First, it is the most comprehensive collection in the West of white porcelain from its first appearance in the 7th century until the 19th century. Thus it gives to the connaisseurs a wonderful opportunity to study the history of Chinese white porcelain during 1200 years. Second, each piece in this collection is selected for its aesthetic qualities only, based upon good shape and harmonious decoration, thus doing the best justice to Chinese porcelain. Third, the white stoneware shows the preparatory steps towards the real porcelain and gives the background mainly to the very important group of T'ang porcelain. The green glazed wares, on the other hand, are an excellent illustration of the development of Yüeh yao and various types of celadon ware from late Han to Ming. Beside these two main series of porcelain and stoneware the Kempe collection contains an extensive group of Te-hua porcelain from Fukien, so-called blanc-de-chine, monochromes from Ming and Ch'ing made at Ch'ing-tê Chên, pieces decorated with underglaze red, and a small but splendid selection of porcelain pieces with enamelled decoration from Ming and Ch'ing. Among the stoneware with monochrome glazes occur also the Ko and Kuan glazes from Sung to Ch'ing, represented by first-class pieces. As an extra addition, completing the green glazed stoneware, there are twenty-five fine examples of Korean celadon from the Koryo period. In spite of its concentration on monochromes this collection shows many facets of Chinese first-class ceramics which must engage everybody with an interest in this subject. Every piece in the collection of nine hundred is reproduced in this catalogue and described; for each category a representative item is given in full- page reproduction. To facilitate the reading of the incised or moulded patterns they are separately drawn. The introduction gives a general survey of the present knowledge in the fields represented in the collection. Together with a timetable of the Chinese historic periods and a map showing the important kiln sites it makes the catalogue a useful handbook. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Catalogue of Late Yuan and Ming Ceramics in the British Museum
British Museum Press, London. 2001, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 071411488X). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 640 pages with 1025 colour and 100 black and white illustrations; 22.70 x 28.5 cm; 2.75 Kg; Used book with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that shows scuffs and scratches. Interior in very good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; VERY HARD TO FIND.; Ming pottery and porcelain, dating from China's Renaissance period between the mid fourteenth and mid seventeenth centuries, has influenced the way people serve food and decorate their buildings from Europe to East Africa. In imperial China, ceramics were needed for the daily use of the emperors and their households as well as for the performance of sacred and secular rites. Inscribed vessels were presented to Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian temples, and pottery replicas were required after death to furnish the deceased with houses, servants and food for the afterlife. Glazed architectural ceramics have been found throughout China. Beyond its borders, high-quality porcelains were bestowed as diplomatic gifts, while lesser wares were widely traded internationally. The British Museum holds the world's broadest collection Ming ceramics, here published for the first time in its entirety. Nearly a thousand items are illustrated, identified, dated and discussed, incorporating the most up-to-date archaeological discoveries and scientific research previously available only in Chinese or specialist journals. The author first provides an accessible historical context, followed by stimulating essays on the porcelain industry, trade and diplomacy, and aspects of social life and burials in the Ming dynasty. Each chapter of the catalogue is then introduced with a brief summary of its defining characteristics. New and revised translations are given for every inscription, with transcriptions in printed Chinese characters. Every entry is illustrated with specially commissioned colour photography. A wealth of additional information, much of it never before published in English, is clearly presented for ease of reference in chronologies, maps, appendices, glossary and bibliography. The result is an essential book for any collector, student or scholar. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

JOLY, HENRY AND TOMITA, KUMASAKU; FOREWORD BY HILLIER, JACK
Japanese Art & Handicraft: An Illustrated Record of the Loan Exhibition Held in Aid of the British Red Cross in October-November, 1915
Robert G Sawers Publishing, London. 1976. (ISBN: 0903697017). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket and slipcase).; 26 x 32 cm.; 2.5 Kg.; 215 pages with mainlt black and white illustrations and a few in colour.; Used with signs of wear on the hardcover. Edgewear. Interior with minor signs of wear. Lacks the dust jacket and slipcase.; Catalogue from an exhibition held in aid of the British Red Cross in October-November, 1915.; First published in 1915 in a limited edition of 175 copies, this is the reprint from 1976.; "Affectionately known by everyone in any way connected with Japanese art as the "Red Cross" Catalogue, this was an astonishing book to appear in 1915 at the height of the war. But the exhibition that gave rise to it, though intended as a fund-raising exploit, was both imaginative and purposeful, and deserved a catalogue that was more than a simple list of exhibits. At ordinary times, there might have been refusals; in 1915, in such a cause, one imagines that no-one would have refused to lend. And so, the list of contributors includes piratically every great name among British collectors: Garbutt, Hawkshaw, Naunton and Joly himself in metalword, Meinertshagen and Trower in netsuke, Kington-Baker, Bateson, Crewdson, Hutchinson, Raphael and Lady Cecilia Rose in prints. As a guide to the collecting habits, the taste and the bias, at a particular time in Britain, there could be no more accurate guide. The illustrations and entries to the various sections of the catalogue vary in interest and importance. The prints include some specimens that are acknowledge masterpices (and one, n. 48, that has since been unmasked as a clever Sharaku fake); several of the netsuke and inro have changed hands in the auction rooms; but above all, the "Red Cross" is outstanding for its representation of a selection of magnificent sword-furniture, especially tsuba and fushi-kashira, which makes the volume indispensable to any serious collector in that field. Joly, in his preface to Part II of the Catalogue, which is wholly devoted to Metalwork, brought, almost for the first time in our literature, some kind of scientific order to the classification of tsuba and other sword-furniture, and perfected a model and a vocabulary for cataloging that has been widely adopted by most of his successors." excerpt from the foreword by Jack Hillier. HILLIER, JACK
Japanese Prints & Drawings from the Vever Collection (Complete 3 Volumes)
Sotheby Parke Bernet Publication LTD, New Jersey and Rizzoli International Publications, Inc, New York. 1976. (ISBN: 0856670251). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (3 volumes with dust jacket in slipcase). Top edges gilt.; 34 x 25.5 cm.; 8.3 Kg.; 1034 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jackets and slipcase. Interior in very good condition.; LIMITED EDITION OF 2,000 COPIES OF WHICH THIS IS 793.; Among the arts of Japan, the colour print continues to exercise the strongest appeal to us in the West. The main reason for the present widespread and growing interest is the powerful design combined with the beauty of the colour harmonies of the prints. But there are also other reasons; they depict a Japan of the past now almost vanished, its culture, mores, annual events, legends and its history; and they also show the influence of the Japanese print on the evolution of modern Western art. In the last few years the most important event in the world of Japanese prints was the discovery of the great collection formed by Henri Vever, a prominent Parisian jeweller and one of the earliest protagonists of Japonism. His first acquisitions were made in the 1880s, and by 1920 he was able to dispose of many thousands to a Japanese industrialist from whom they went eventually to the Tokyo National Museum, where they now form the major part of the national collection. But Henri Vever retained many of the choicest specimens to which he later added by astute buying in the 1920, when the collections of erstwhile rivals like Gonse, Haviland, Manzi, and Javal came under the hammer in Paris. The outbreak of war in 1939 and the occupation of France led to the complete disappearance of what had become a legendary collection and its survival remained in doubt until it was announced that part of it was to be sold at Sotheby's in two sales, one in 1974 and another in 1975. In order to record this unique collection in a manner worthy of its importance, the volumes comprise not only the prints and drawings that appeared in the two sales but also, through the generous co-operation of the present owner, those that will not be sold, many of which are of the greatest rarity and have seldom, if ever, been reproduced before. The 970 items, all of which are illustrated, about 69 in colour, have been arranged chronologically and those in series have been placed in their correct order. Brief notes on the artists, their style of work and environment, as well as the development of the wood-block print in Japan, link each section. The name of the artist is also shown in Japanese characters. The quality of these prints and drawings bear witness to the supremacy of Henri Vever as a collector and provide what is the finest and most comprehensive series of illustrations ever to appear on the subject in Western literature. Jack Hillier, whose unrivalled expertise in the field of the Japanese print is internationally recognised, is the author of numerous books on Japanese prints and paintings which have appeared over the last twenty years. The Choice of the Private Trader: The Private Market in Chinese Export Porcelain Illustrated from the Hodroff Collection
Zwemmer, an imprint of Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd, London. 1994, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0302006427). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22.5 x 29.5 cm, 1.6 Kg; 298 pages with 350 colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear. The dust jacket has a tear on the top right cover and is now protected with a clearcover. INCLUDES DEDICATION TO PREVIOUS OWNER AND SIGNATURE BY THE COLLECTORS DORIS AND LEO HODROFF.; The Private Trade in Chinese Export porcelain, as distinct from East India Company Trade, has hitherto scarcely been recognised as a subject in its own right. And yet the officers and supercargoes of the Hon. East India Company took full advantage of their license to trade in their own capital risk, that is the most collected today. David S. Howard surveys more than two centuries of manufacture, and throws new light on how the trade was actually conducted. The Hodfroff Collection, the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the world, closely mirrors the tastes of the private traders and is the ideal source of illustration for this pioneering work. The porcelain is divided into six groups according to use - dinner services, tea and coffee sets, drinking vessels, personal and everyday utensils, decorative vases, and human and animal figures - in broadly chronological arrangement, akin to the way in which it became available on the market. The reader therefore sees the pieces much in the way they were first seen by the supercargoes and captains who commissioned them in Canton, or chose them from the shelf in china shop in 'Thirteen Factory Street' behind the European hongs on the Pearl River. Drawing on extensive new research in East India Company and other records, and also on major findings from recently discovered seventeenth-and-eighteen century wrecks and their cargoes, The Choice of the Private Trader significantly extends our knowledge of Chinese Export porcelain, and with its 350 colour illustrations presents and exciting addition to the select literature of essential ceramic reference books. This catalogue, a unique book of reference in its own right, is testament to the stunning collection of objects, some of them never before seen in a public exhibition, that has been brought together to tell the Tale of Three Cities." excerpt from the foreword by Henry Wyndham, Chairman, Sotheby's U.K.; "This exhibition offers an historical summary of one of the great, and at the time most unusual, trade partnerships in the history of commerce, and at the same time suggests a path forward in the more complex world of today. Not for the first time it is the decorative arts which provide the principal way of painting a panorama of the events of the past. That they comprised only between 5% and 10% of the whole trade with China throughout that time is less important than the fact that they remain to tell their story." excerpt from the introduction by David Howard. Dragons, Tigers and Bamboo: Japanese Porcelain and Its Impact in Europe - the Macdonald Collection
Douglas & McIntyre, D&M Piblishers Inc. Canada. 2009, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781553654346). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 24 x 29.4 cm; 1.345 Kg; 200 pages with 160 colour illustrations.; Used book in very good condition overall. Interior as new. The dust jacket exterior shows signs of wear, namely some minor scuffs and edgewear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Since the early seventeenth century when the secret of porcelain was first carried from China to Japan by Korean potters, Japan has produced some of the world's most exquisite porcelains. The Kakiemon masters in Arita on the island of Kyushu gained particular renown for the quality of their colourful overglaze enamels and artistic designs. Through exports Kakiemon ware had a profound impact on the development of European porcelain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, inspiring ceramic manufacturers in both continental Europe and England to reach new levels of technical and artistic achievement. This book highlights 170 masterpieces from the Bill and Molly Anne Macdonald Collection at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto, Canada. This extraordinary collection illustrates many different aspects of the historical interaction between Japanese and European porcelain during the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is unquestionably the best cross-cultural porcelain collection in Canada and is among the best of its kind in the world. In Part I, Chief Curator Charles Mason contributes a concise and highly informative history of porcelain in Japan from 1600 to 1750; Oliver Impey, formerly curator of Eastern Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, focuses on Kakiemon porcelain, and Christiaan J.A. Jorg, Professor of Art History at the University of Leiden, traces the influence of Japanese export porcelain on European porcelain. In Part II, Charles Mason provides enlightening commentaries on selected pieces from the Macdonald Collection, including various Japanese styles as well as Delfware from the Netherlands. Meissen and Frankenthaler porcelains from Germany; Chantilly, Saint-Cloud, Villeroy and Samsom porcelains from France, and Chelsea, Bow, Worcester and other wares from England.; This publication for the first time makes the Macdonald collection accessible to an international audience.
