Still the representation shows well the strength of Cleveland. Japanese art has been part of the museum since its opening in 1916, but it is important to note that by far the greatest part of this magnificent assembly was acquired by The Cleveland Museum of Art's current and preeminent Director and Curator of Oriental Art, Dr. Sherman E. Lee. Curator since, 1952, Director since 1958, Dr. Lee, together with his colleagues Michael R. Cunningham and Ursula Korneitchouck , wrote the catalogue. Dr. Lee made the selection of works of art to be included." excerpt from the foreword by Rand Castile, Director, Japan House Gallery. Good/No Jacket.

Five hundred years later a remarkable exhibition and book celebrate this crucial turning point in civilization by examining the art and history f the principle cultures in Europe and the Mediterranean, eastern Asia, and the Americas. The book begins by looking at the Mediterranean world as the new seaborn empires were being formed, surveying the visual arts and principal intellectual and spiritual currents in major political centers from Portugal to Turkey to Africa. Next it takes the reader on Colombus' proposed route east to the fabled lands of Cathay, presenting essays about and illustrations of paintings, sculpture, calligraphy, and decorative art that document the venerable civilizations of the Far East. Finally, it surveys the great empires and chiefdoms of the Americas that the Europeans suddenly and unexpectedly encontered, fosusing on major works of Aztec sculpture, textiles from the Inka Empire, works in gold from Columbia and Costa Rica, and objects from the pre-Columbian cultures of North America. It is a special pleasure for the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, as part of its program of exchange in the visual arts, to introduce this exhibition to the large audience it will reach while circulating to museums and art galleries in this country." excerpt from the foreword by Elizabeth A. LOVELL, HIN-CHEUNG
Illustrated Catalogue of Ting Yao and Related White Wares in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art
School of Oriental and African Studies, Percival David Foundation of Chinese Ar, London. 1964. Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback.; 15,5 x 24,5 cm; 0.2 Kg; 69 pages plus addendum with 12 pages, with black and white illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the interior and exterior.; Section 4 of the catalogue series depicting the collection of the Percival David Collection.; "This section of the catalogue is based on a thesis entitled 'The Early White Wares in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art', prepared under my supervision and presented for the degree of M.A. in the University of London by Mrs. Hin-cheung Lovell, formerly Miss Leung Hin-cheung. The degree was awarded with a mark of distinction in December 1963. Mrs. Lovell was educated in Hong Kong, where she read English and History at the University, and Graduated B.A. with First Class Honours. After service in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, she came to London and was awarded a studentship at the School of Oriental and African Studies for two years, during which she carried out the research recorded in her thesis. The present section of the Catalogue includes some of the rarest and most beautiful objects in the Percival David Collection, though the number of items is smaller than that in previous sections. Knowledge of the subject-matter, however, has been considerably extended during and since the Second World War, mainly by Chinese and Japanese scholars whose work is not widely known in the West, and the collation and exposition of their discoveries have called for a longer introduction than would otherwise be required. Mrs. Lovell has clarified the problems involved in the study of the early white wares, contributed to the solution of some of them, defined the present limits of our knowledge, and suggested profitable lines of advance." foreword by S. Howard Hansford, Head of the Percival David Foundation. Good/No Jacket.

Black Robe White Mist: Art of the Japanese Buddhist Nun Rengetsu
National Gallery of Australia. 2007, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780642541390). Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback.; 23 x 23 cm.; 0.8 Kg. 148 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Rengetsu, whose name evocatively translates as Lotus Moon, was a Japanese Buddhist nun. Her life was one of great suffering and unusual creativity largely borne out of necessity. One of the few successful female artists of her time, Rengetsu was most famous for her poetry and distinctive calligraphy, and also produced delicate scroll paintings and rustic ceramics. Black robe white mist reveals the beauty of the understated and unconventional, and is significant as the first major exhibition of Rengetsu's work to be held outside Japan. The contemplative exhibition features works of art drawn mainly from private international collections in Europe, Japan and America, as well as a number of scroll paintings and ceramics from Australian public institutions and the National Gallery's own collection. Very Good.
