Chinese Ceramics: Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911
Victoria and Albert Museum - Far Eastern Series. 1986, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0948107170). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22.5 x 25.5 cm; 0.789 kg; 142 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear on the dust jacket. The interior has an ex-library stamp on title page. The remaining interior is in very good condition.; This is the first of several volumes on East Asian ceramics in the Far Eastern Series. The Victoria and Albert Museum houses one of the biggest and most comprehensive collections of Chinese ceramics in the West, a large number of which are porcelains dating to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). They include pieces made for the imperial court, as well as those used by Chinese men and women from a wide variety of social strata. This book describes the production of porcelain, which reached a peak of technical perfection in the early eighteenth century, and sets it against a wider historical and political background. The story is followed right through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century; this later period has often been neglected. New information about kiln construction is linked with descriptions of the personalities behind the industry. Technological advances led to many manufacturing and decorating innovations, which are illustrated by pieces from the Museum's collection. Rich monochrome, sparkling blue and white and brilliant enamel-decorated vessels between them demonstrate the important role played by ceramics in the history of Chinese art and design. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

This is the second and augmented edition of her book Song Dynasty Ceramics which was first published by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2004. The World in Colours: An Exhibition of Ceramics with Coloured Decoration Dating from 700 to 1920 Belonging to Members of the Oriental Ceramic Society
Oriental Ceramic Society. 2006, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0903421275). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 19.2 x 24.3 cm; 0.323 Kg; 104 pages with illustrations.; Signs of wear in the front cover, namely edgewear, slight peeling on the bottom right of the front page and also wear mark on the top right of the front cover. Interior as new.; Catalogue from the exhibition in 2006 held at the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, London.; Selection and catalogue committees: Rose Kerr, Chair and Editor (formerly V&A Museum); Jessica Harrison-Hall (British Museum); Sheila Canby (British Museum); Stacey Pierson (Percival David Foundation); Scott Rosemary (Christie's), Anthony du Boulay (formerly Christie's); Phillip Allen (Collector) and Jean Martin.; The previous exhibition organised by the Oriental Ceramics Society in 2003, was devoted to the use of cobalt to paint designs on white porcelain wares that were then fired to a high temperature after the application of colourless glaze. This blue and white Chinese porcelain had a profound and lasting influence on ceramics made in Asia and Europe, but this new exhibition explores other methods of decorating ceramics had been used in China and elsewhere long before cobalt was introduced. The earliest ceramics in the exhibition date to the Tang dynasty (618-906), and the latest to the early decades of the 20th century when modern design schools had started to operate in China. Over 220 ceramic pieces from members of the Oriental Ceramic Society illustrate the 1,400 years between these two dates. Colourful Song, Ming and Qing dynasty wares are shown alongside vessels from Japan, Vietnam, the Middle East and Europe, to illustrate the immense impact China had on world ceramics. Good.

KEYES, ROGER (CATALOGUE); HILLIER, JACK (INTRODUCTION)
The Art of Surimono: Privately Published Japanese Woodblock Prints and Books in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin (2 Volumes in Slipcase)
Philip Wilson Publishers, London for Sotheby's Publications. 1985, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0856671762). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in slipcase); 25.5 x 30 x 7 cm (with slipcase); 25 x 34 cm.; 4.4 Kg.; 569 pages with black and white a a few colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear on the dust jackets and on the interior. The slipcase is worn and show signs of wear, namely a tear throughout all the bottom, which is now glued with book tape.; The Japanese word surimono means "a printed objet". During the 1760s, it began to be applied to a new form of woodblock print whose popularity lasted well into the nineteenth century: the privately commissioned print, published in a limited edition for distribution among a circle of friends or associates. Most surimono fall into one of two categories: those which commemorate a special event and those which combine a picture with verse. Both types incorporate a written text, and one of the most rewarding qualities of surimono lies in the extraordinary subtlely (especially in verse surimono) with which the artist complements with his imaginary the content of the text, so that picture and words together yield a richer experience than either could create independently. The advent of surimono coincided with major advances in colour-printing, and the form was to attract artists to the stature of Gakutei, Hokkei, Hokusai, Kunisada, Shinsai and Shumman. Drawing their subject-matter from siuch veried sources as legend and literature, social customs, topography, the theatre, crafts and ordinary life, these and other masters share with us a vision of the world which explores every shade of human feeling and response. There is no more comprehensive collection of surimono in Europe than the one which the English scholar Jack Hilier began to assemble in the 1950s for the Chester Beatty Library Dublin: this book provides an illustrated catalogue of the collection. The first and largest of its three sections includes surimono in the Ukiyo-e style procuced in the Edo between the 1760s and 1840s. The second includes the privately printed illustrated books and albuns which are also in the library. The third consists of prints by artists of the Shijo school, mostly created in Osaka 1850-70. The catalogue is preceded by a historical introduction; biographies of the artists are given before the relevant entries and two final sections are devoted respectively to an index of the kyoka poets whose verses appear on the surimono in the first section and to later copies of the prints. This lavishly illustrated book will provide an essential source of reference for collectors and students of Japanese prints. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

The first was in 1963, in the Liaoning Provincial Museum at Shenyang. Organised by Yang Renkai, it featured more than a hundred works by Gao Qipei. Anyone at all familiar with Chinese art will have heard of Gao Qipei, the man who painted with his fingers. A hundred scrolls and albums are on show in the exhibition. Sixty of them are Gao Qipei's work, thirty are by artists who emulated him from the eighteenth to the twentieth, including six exhibits by the Japanese painter Ikeno Taiga. The exhibition hinges on Gao Qipei's well-know album of landscapes acquired by Jan Fontein, the Rijksmuseum's former curator of Asiatic art, for the Society of Friends of Asiatic Art in 1955, since when it has been on extended loan to the museum. The society of Friends of Asiatic Art was founded in 1918 by a group of private individuals for the purpose of forming a public collection of Asiatic Art, the first of its kind in the Netherlands. Over the years the Society has procured more than fourteen hundred works from China, Japan, India, Indonesia and a number of smaller Asian countries. Though not particularly large, in terms of artistic quality the collection can hold its own with the best that other countries have to offer. Take the Gao Qipei album, for instance: it has been reproduced time and again in authoritative manuals on Chinese painting, and is acknowledge in China and Japan as one of Gao Qipei's best works. The exhibition 'Discarding the Brush' marks the seventy-fifth jubilee of the society of Friends of Asiatic Art, and is the Rijksmuseum's special tribute to the society. The loans come from twenty museums and eleven private collections." excerpt from the foreword. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

The Wrestling Boys. Chinese and Japanese Ceramics from the 16th to the 18th Century in the Collection at Burghley House
Burghley House, Stamford. 1981. Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 20.5 x 25.5 cm; 0.389 Kg; 98 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations; Used in very good condition. Minor signs of wear on the interior. Signed by Mr. David Broughton on June 16th 1983.; Catalogue from an exhibition arranged by the Trustees of Burghley House, devoted to Chinese and Japanese export porcelain of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.; "The collection at Burghley House has been known to scholars for some considerable time, certainly as far back as the late nineteenth century when some of the more interesting Ming and Transitional porcelain was sold in order to discharge debts. Soame Jenyns and P.J. Donnelly recognised the importance of the collection and the celebrated '1688' Inventory, to which they both referred. Relatively little research was carried out on the collection. Jenyns writing about the the Christie's sale in 1959, which included several pieces from this Inventory says 'Unfortunately much of the oriental porcelain in this inventory must by then left Burleigh House'. In this assumption, however, he was incorrect. Only a small proportion of the collection was on view to the public, the majority of the Japanese and Chinese porcelains were either kept in the private apartments or locked in cupboards unopened for more than a generation. He was also unaware of the second and equally important Inventory included in the Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth, dowager Countess of Devonshire (dated 1690). In this document she bequeathed the contents of her bedchamber and closet to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter, wife of the Fifth Earl. This Inventory list over one hundred and fitly pieces of porcelain." excerpt from the introduction by Gordon Lang. Fine/No Jacket.
