FORRER, MATTHI
The Baur Collection, Geneva: Japanese Prints (2 Volumes)
Collections Baur, Genève. 1994, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 2880310075). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and French text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in slipcase).; Two volumes in slipcase; 23.5 x 29.5 x 8 cm; 5.2 Kg; With colour and black and white illustrations throughout.; Limited edition of 3100 copies, of which this is 448.; Used book in very good condition. Looks as new. Minor signs of wear on the slipcase.; "These two volumes include the Japanese prints collected by Alfred Baur over the forty or so years from 1909 to 1949. This art form, is known to have exerted a decisive influence on the development of Western painting, offering first to Impressionist painters and then to the Nabil (to mention only France) an example of a new type of compositions that can serve as an alternative to the grand tradition inherited from the Renaissance. Van Gogh and Monet had assembled collections of prints that are still very carefully preserved and the writer Edmond de Goncourt, himself a well-informed collector, had published two major studies with the help of the Japanese merchant Tadamasa Hayashi, one on Utamaro, the other on Hokusai. Matthi Forrer, the author of the present catalogue, deals exhaustively with the "floating world" and with the various aspects of the production of these pictures carved on wood, a good knowledge of which is so important for an appreciation of the Japanese print." excerpt from the introduction by Frank Dunand (keeper of the Baur Collection), 1994. Selection Committee for the Exhibition: Basil Gray, Esq. C.B. C.B.E. (chairman); John Ayers Esq.; Sir Harry Garner, K.B.E. C.B.; Miss Margaret Medley; Lt. Colonel W.B.R. Neave-Hill; Dr Hugh Shire; Professor William Watson.; Exhibition catalogue to celebrate the Jubilee Year of the Oriental Ceramic Society, London limited to Chinese Ceramics, covering the whole field from Neolithic times down to the Ch'ing dynasty. The Committee divided the area of its selection into four sections chronologically but, when appropriate, overlapping so as to follow through each major ware across the dynastic boundaries. The four sections demarcated cover the following periods: (a) from neolithic to the T'ang and Liao dynasties; (b) Sung and Yuan dynasties; (c) Yuan and Ming dynasties; and (d) Ch'ing dynasty. The overlapping is particularly noticeable in the two middle sections. In Section (b), the Yuan wares which follow the Sung tradition, such as the celadons, are included; while in Section (c) the Yuan wares included are the shu fu, blue and white and allied wares of Ching-tê Chên, which form the basis of most of the Ming porcelains. GOMPERTZ, G. ST. G. M.
The National Art Treasures of Korea: An Exhibition of National Art Treasures of Korea
The Arts Council, London. 1961. Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback.; 18.5 x 24 cm.; 0.3 Kg.; Introductory text, followed by list of the 152 exhibited works and images of the each of the works.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior.; Catalogue from an Exhibition of National Art Treasures of Korea lent by the government of the republic of Korea held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, from 23 March to 7 May, 1961, which included gold crown and ornaments, gold and gilt bronze statues, decorated tiles and paving bricks, pottery and porcelain, and paintings.; "The Exhibition of National Art Treasures of Kore is a unique event. Not only does it comprise works which form part of the heritage of the Korean nation and cannot be matched by examples in public or private collections elsewhere, but it is the first exhibition of Korean art ever to be held in England. Although of great artistic and cultural importance, the arts of Korea have been largely neglected by students in this country: they are less familiar than those of China and Japan, being poorly represented in our national collections, nor has any illustrated publication been readily available to demonstrate their quality and significance. This short introduction is aimed to serve as a background and to help visitors to place in perspective the 152 exhibits of gold, bronze, pottery and painting of various periods which are now assembled, thanks to the generosity of the Government of the republic of Korea. Of these exhibits, 101 were among those which toured museums and art galleries in America from 1957 to 1959, and 51 are new items which have never before left Korea." excerpt from the introduction by G. St. G. M. Gompertz. Good/No Jacket.

GORDON, ELINOR; HYDE, J.A. LLOYD (FOREWORD)
Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain
John Murray, London. 1978, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0719534607). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 21.2 x 26.2 cm; 0.750 Kg; 160 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations; Used book in good condition. Unclipped dust jacket. Signs of wear. Small tears on the top of the back cover. The outside text block shows minor yellowing.; The collecting of porcelains made by the Chinese for export to the West had become a major activity in the second half of the twentieth century. Millions of objects were shipped from such ports as Canton from the 1600s through the early 1800s, and, of those that have survived intact, a significant number are worthy of the serious attention of the connoisseur. Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain highlights the important areas for North American and European collectors to consider and provides an authoritative and useful context within which to evaluate such antique objects. The 170 black and white and 20 colour illustrations are of pieces drawn from the collection of Elinor and Horace Gordon and represented only a small proportion of the thousands of objects they have assembled over the past 35 years. In the words of J.A. Lloyd Hyde, "The remarkable collection formed over a long period by Elinor and Horace Gordon covers in the most comprehensive way the whole fascinating spectrum of porcelain made in China solely for export." It is a representative collection of extraordinary usefulness to the beginning or the advanced collector. The earliest rare blue and white objects of the K'ang Hsi period are included along with the much more common tea sets and dinner services made for notable American families at the end of the eighteenth century. Objects from British and European armorial services are particularly well represented, and among these are some, such as the van Goudriaan and von Herzeele services, which rightfully belong only in museum collections. Similarly valuable are porcelains which display in their decoration special religious and mythological motifs as well as European and Oriental genre scenes. Some were produced in fairly large quantities; others are practically one-of-a-kind objects. The vast majority of the wares illustrated and explained in Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain were specifically made for European and American customers from the 1730s to the beginning of the nineteenth century when export ware began to decline in quality. The justly-acclaimed famille rose enamel colours predominate in the decoration of the wares illustrated. The variety of objects is extensive - from dinner plates to soup tureens to animal figures to various sorts of bowls and accessories. Those made for the American market account for only a small proportion of the illustrated examples since trade between the United States and China did not commence until after the Revolution. Included, however, among the American pieces are such rare items as Cincinnati china, objects bearing ship and eagle designs, and true armorial objects. Not included are pieces decorated in Rose Medallion, Canton, Nanking, and Mandarin patterns which, for the most part, were shipped to North America in the nineteenth century. The Gordons have never collected this later ware, although there are fine examples to be found in all these decorative categories. Good/Dust Jacket Included.
