CORBEILLER, CLARE LE (AUTHOR); PHILLIPS, JOHN GOLDSMITH (FOREWORD)
China Trade Porcelain: Patterns of Exchange. Additions to the Helena Woolworth Mccann Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. 1974, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0870990896). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22.5 x 28 cm; 0.9 Kg; 134 pages with black and white illustrations.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket. Interior in very good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; At the crest of the long commerce between China and the West in the mid-to late eighteenth century, Chinese porcelain was eagerly acquired by Western rulers, statesmen, leading families, and others alert for the novel. Its primary appeal was that it could be designed to order, and when it came off the trade ships a season or two later, many of the pieces - sometimes entire dinner sets - were decorated with family armorials, images still topical, or designs more or less freely reproduced from drawings or engravings sent to China the year before. Recent interest in China trade porcelain has brought to light significant new examples of this ware. The present study deals with fifty-two pieces or groups of pieces added since 1955 to the Metropolitan Museum's well-known Helena Woolworth McCann Collection of China Trade Porcelain. Dating from the early sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, these tapersticks, cups, pitchers, plates, dishes, and tureens tell us a good deal about the growth of European interest in the ware, how Western tastes in design changed, how the makers' skills and techniques took them from blue-and-white ware through grisaille and famille rose painting to polychrome plus gilt, and how the shapes of porcelain reflected in some cases the direct influences of European metalwork and glassware. All fifty-two additions to the collection are comprehensively illustrated - nearly a quarter of them are shown in color - and numerous views of comparable pieces in other collections are included, as well as the original pictorial sources for many of the painted decorations. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Chinese Export Porcelain
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. 2003. Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback (stapled); 60 pages with colour illustrations.; 22 x 28.2 cm; 0.245 Kg; As new showing signs of shelf wear and our logo glued to the front free endpaper. Edgeworn.; Reprint of the The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, v. 60, no. 3 (Winter, 2003).; Catalogue for the exhibition "Chinese Export Porcelain at The Metropolitan Museum of Art," held at the Museum from January 14 to July 13, 2003. ; "By the eighteenth century trade between China and Europe had expanded from a quest for spices to embrace tea, textiles, silver, and porcelain. Porcelain was incidental to the success of this trade, constituting 6 percent or less of the value of East India Company cargoes. But the quantity of exported porcelains - some 300 million pieces are believed to have reached England over two centuries - ensured a lasting influence on Western taste and ceramics history. Several hundred thousand blue and white porcelains received yearly in ports from London to Gothenburg graced shelves, cabinets, and dinner and tea tables, as the novelty of the material impelled its reinvention by fledgling European porcelain factories. An entirely new aesthetic-part Western, part Asian-emerged with private traders, who gave rein to their individual tastes by ordering, directly from China, specially designed porcelains painted with armorials, views, or timely images based on drawings and prints. Today, part of the appeal of Chinese export porcelain lies in the biographical and historical contexts of these orders, which provide a personal element that is particular to the porcelain trade. The foundation of the Museum's collection of Chinese export porcelain for the European trade was the Helena Woolworth McCann Collection of about four thousand pieces, which was formed in the late 1930s in Europe and the United States and focused on eighteenth-century armorial services. Half of the collection was lent to the Metropolitan in 1946, and 414 pieces were given to the Museum in 1951 by the Winfield Foundation, established by the McCann family. By agreement with the foundation, and in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the remainder of the McCann Collection was dispersed among twenty-four American museums. Subsequent additions, for the most part generously supported by the Winfield Foundation, have been made with a view to illustrating more of the stylistic and cultural interactions between China and Europe that have come to light over two decades of ever-widening scholarship. No single collection, donor, or collector stands out among our American-market porcelains. Works with important American connections were bought during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. What is consistent in the pattern of acquisitions is that a number of significant porcelains were not "collected" per se but cherished and passed down from generation to generation of family members, who felt, ultimately, that the best place for their heirlooms to be cared for and appreciated was at the Metropolitan Museum. I refer in particular to superb examples given by Verplanck descendants and to three great American-market punch bowls made for John Lamb, Benjamin Eyre, and Ebenezer Stevens, as well as to the large Paine service, a gift from the family. The authors of this Bulletin are Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, Anthony W. and Lulu C. Wang Curator of American Decorative Arts, and Clare Le Corbeiller, curator emerita in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, who retired from the Museum in 2000. We are delighted to have her contribution to this issue and to note that she maintains a strong presence at the Metropolitan. Through her impeccable curatorial practices and numerous important acquisitions, and as a stimulating mentor to colleagues and students, she has made a lasting mark on this institution as well as on the field of decorative arts. The hinge is slightly loose but the binding is still firm.; A catalogue for the permanent collection of the Museu do Oriente in Lisbon, which focuses on the presence of Portugal in Asia.; "When we began programming the exhibition modules, we understood that the collection of more than 1000 objects related to the Portuguese presence in Asia was almost unstudied. As such, the making of this catalogue was the indispensable occasion to do so. In general, it may be said that the goal was achieved, although many segments of the collection still require deeper studies, as evidenced by the Chinese terracotta and some aspects of legacies in deposit." excerpt of an introductory text by Fernando António Baptista Pereira. Le Bleu Des Mers: Dialogues Entre la Chine, la Perse Et L'Europe
5 Continents Editions, Milan. 2017, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9788874397747). Soft cover. Book, French text; Paperback; 21.5 x 27 cm; 1,1 kg; 216 pages with 153 colour illustrations.; Catalogue from the exhibition held at Fondation Baur, Musée des Arts D'Extrême-Orient from the 23 November 2017 to 25 February 2018.; Responding to the interest in the relations between the Far East, Asia and Europe, this exhibition reconsiders the exportation of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain whose commerce was popularised during the 17th century by the Dutch East India Company. This century is known for having been the Golden Age of the Low Countries. Its successful maritime dealings with the Indies made the newly-fledged Republic of the United Provinces one of Europe's greatest commercial powers. And its openness to different modes of thought also attracted many writers, thinkers and scholars, creating a cultural centre in which the arts and literature flourished. The middle class of merchants made wealthy by trade with the Indies were primarily those who commissioned works of art and bought exotic curios. Naturally, this commerce with the East affected the life and art of the United Provinces, with Chinese porcelain in particular exerting a strong influence on interior decoration. These wares were also included as symbols of wealth in still-life paintings and Vanities, works that reflect the use of this precious tableware and its impact on daily life. When the supply of porcelain wares shrank drastically as a consequence of political strife in China at the end of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), Chinese ceramics were temporarily replaced by Japanese and Persian copies. For centuries, Persia had imported porcelain from China, wares that had inspired its potters and painters of miniatures. The exhibition showed dialogues between still-life paintings that feature items of blue-and-white porcelain, highly prized by an expanding Europe ready to embrace the exotic, and the porcelain wares by which the paintings were inspired, as well as their copies in Persian faience, and miniatures from the Islamic world that include images of these ceramics. Japanese Paintings in the Linden-Museum Stuttgart: A Selection from the Baelz Collection (2 Volumes in Slipcase)
Linden Museum Stuttgart, Germany. 1991. (ISBN: 3000036024). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (cloth in slipcase). 24 x 32.5 x 10 cm.; 5.8 Kg.; 366 pages (text volume) plus 495 pages (plate volume).; 2 VOLUMES IN SLIPCASE, ONE WITH TEXT AND THE OTHER WITH PLATES.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior of the slipcase, which show wear signs throughout, namely some blue marks on the exterior of the slipcase. Interior of both volumes in very good condition.; "The inventory, compiled in 1893 or slightly later, of the paintings collected by Erwin Baelz contains 3,131 items, and includes 463 mounted hanging scrolls and 2,668 unmounted hanging scrolls, handscrolls, drawing books for instructions and single-sheet drawings. This huge amount of visual material has survived almost completely, despite two world wars. After an appraisal, roughly half of the items were further researched and examined to establish their authenticity. For the catalogue, a further selection was made according to quality and historical interest. We have tried to include all authentic scrolls and drawings which are either signed or have inscriptions identifying them as copies after well-known masters. Among anonymous works, nearly all the Buddhist paintings and handscrolls have been included. Unsigned anonymous drawings ascribed to different schools of painting have been selected in view or their quality and iconographic significance, Works which could be clearly identified as fakes have only been included when they may be helpful for the reconstruction of the lost ouevre of a master artist. A few items have been included from two bequests to the Linden-Museum, those of Anna and Christian Trumpf and of professor Jakob Fisher, where they complement works from the Baelz collection. The catalogue contains 875 entries of some 1,200 single items, which occasionally form part of a series, of diptychs, triptychs or of several handscrolls or picture albuns. The main significance of this collection of paintins is its sheer quantity, which allows a comprehensive overview of the various stylistic developments and schools of Japanese painting during the middle and late Edo period (1603-1868) and early Meiji era (1868 to 1912). An important point of reference is the fact that all objects must date from before 1893, the year they entered the collection of the former Koniglich Wurt-tembergisches Landes-Gewerbemuseum in Stuttgart. Of particular interest is the large number of unmounted drawings, sketches and copies (mekuri), which provide valuable documentary material on the organization of painting workshops, the training of pupils and the production methods of painting masters during the late Edo period, subjects which have been very little researched." excerpt from the introduction by Doris Croissant. Persia and China: Safavid Blue and White Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum, 1501-1738
La Borie. 2002, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0953819612). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25.5 x 32.5 cm; 2.5 kg; 314 pages with black and white illustrations and a few in colour.; Minor signs of wear on the dust jacket. Signed by the author with dedication to a previous owner on front free endpaper. The remaining interior looks as new.; Persia and China is the first catalogue of blue and white Persian ceramics of the Safavid dynasty. It is a catalogue raisonné of the collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the largest in the world, consisting of over 500 ceramics mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. General Sir Richard Murdoch Smith was the first to recognize the need to create a comprehensive Islamic Persian collection for what was then known as the South Kensington Museum. The largest part of the collection was put together during the period he spent in Persia from 1865 to 1885 and subsequently as director of the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh. Murdoch Smith was also the first to grasp the importance of the position of Persia on the sea route between western Europe and eastern Asia, and its impact on the production of Persian ceramics. This present study deals with the changing relations between the designs and shapes of Safavid blue and white ceramics and their models, both from the Far East and Europe. Yolande Crowe has written extensively on the architecture and decorative arts of Islam. A particular preoccupation has been the relationship between these arts and their Chinese prototypes, especially the blue and white porcelains of Jingdezhen. She has also worked on archaeological material from Islamic sites in Afghanistan and Iran. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Privately Published, New York, 2005.; Used with signs of wear on the slipcase, which show wear signs on the spine, front and back cover, and on the bottom and top. Interior in very good condition with minor signs of wear.; "When we began to collect in 1985, we were told that there were very few books available on Chinese furniture that would help us understand and select authentic pieces. We learned that the most important work had been written by Mr. Robert Ellsworth of New York, who had formed his collection from the late 1950s though the early 1970s. His book Chinese Furniture: Hardwood Examples of the Ming and Early Ch'ing Dynasties was published in 1971. In 1982 he organized and exhibition of Chinese hardwood furrniture in Hawaiian collections for the Honolulo Academy of Arts and wrote the accompanying catalogue; he had also written occasional articles on Chinese furniture. We immediately acquired his publications and began reading them and admiring the pieces. We were delighted to find that despite the many social and dynastic changes in China's history, some of the Chinese arts were being preserved by an American collector and dealer. Our collection consists of over one hundred pieces, most of which are included in this catalogue. We find our Chinese furniture to be both functional and beautiful. Because we live with our collection in a very tactile way - our children sleep in the beds, we eat our meals on a large painting table, we sit in the chairs and ch'uangs - we have developed an intimate familiarity with the proportions of Ming and early Ch'ing furniture, with what feels and looks right and what does not. The first piece we bought, a long huang hua-li table (no. 66) is still with us; other pieces have come and gone over the years. With the help of many educated friends and dealers, we have refined our connoisseurship so that we are now more easily able to distinguish the good from the bad." excerpt from the Volume I preface by Mimi and Raymond Hung 1996.; "Many of the smaller, but no less important pieces in this volume are a tribute to Mimi and the knowledge she has accumulated over fifteenth years. Mimi is ardently committed to this field and has worked very hard to put together the group of scholar's objects and personal furnishings. Her expertise and connoisseurship has grown steadily. Both Mimi and Raymond have accomplished the building of a collection which is probably unique and, at the same time, take great pleasure in living with their treasures whether in their homes of offices." excerpt from the Volume II preface by Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, 2015.
