Fondation Georges et Marie Vergottis, Lausanne; La Bibliotheque. 2004, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 2884531165). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and French text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25.5 x 27.8 cm; 1.473 Kg; 223 pages with colour illustrations.; Used book in very good condition, showings signs of wear on the front, spine and back cover of the dust jacket. Edgeworn.; The interior is in very good condition with same pages slight bent on the top right corner.; Exhibition catalogue from the Vergottis collection of Chinese porcelain at the Foundation de l'Hermitage in Lausanne, Switzerland in January 2003 including Celadon Wares, Ming Tomb Figures, Ming Imperial Porcelains, Blanc de Chine Porcelains. Also included are porcelains from the late Ming and Qing dynasties, namely: Blue-and-White, Decorated in Coloured Enamels of the "Famille Verte", Decorated in "Famille Verte" Enamels on the Biscuit, Yellow and Green-Glazed, Coral-Red-Glazed, White-Glazed, Turquoise-Glazed, "Famille Rose", Blue-Glazed and Copper-Red-Glazzed.; "Collectors of oriental ceramics today have an enviable range of choice, but more than some others the Vergottis collection conveys the impression of a very personal taste. It is composed almost entirely of the colourful porcelains made in China during the eighteenth century, and especially of the monochrome glazes that are renowned for their constant purity of tint, and for complementing perfectly the delicate symmetry of the forms they cover. The display of these wares in the newly designed gallery at l'Hermitage in Lausanne in January 2003 gave a brilliant public airing to a collection that was made solely for private pleasure, and bears witness to its owner's special appreciation of porcelain." excerpt from the introductory text "The Vergottis Collection of Chinese Porcelain at the Fondation de l'Hermitage in Lausanne" by John Ayers. AYERS, JOHN
Far Eastern Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum
Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd, London. 1980, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 0856670766). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 27.3 x 37.4 cm; 2,190 kg; 174 pages with colour illustrations Includes ribbon bookmark.; Used with wear marks throughout the dust jacket, and a tear on the top left side of the dust jacket front cover. Interior with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. Good copy overall.; First published in 1975 by Kodansha Ltd, Tokyo, as Oriental Ceramics: The World Great Collections, Volume 6, Victoria and Albert Museum.; The collection of oriental ceramics at the Victoria and Albert Museum is among the world's finest. Numbering over nine thousand items which are for the most part on permanent view to the public, it owes much to a long line of benefactors and to such gifted curator historians as Bernard Rackham, W.B. Honey and Arthur Lane, each of whom contributed to its unique character. The elegant Chinese porcelains so abundantly represented in George Salting's great bequest of 1910 are balanced by a comprehensive range of earlier wares that was notably reinforced in the late '30s by the acquisition of the Eumorfopoulos Collection for the nation. Japanese, Korean and South-east Asian wares are also very fully represented. The selection of ninety-four masterpieces, magnificently photographed in colour, together with an extended series of black-and-white illustrations, here provide an overall view of the collection for the first time. The choice was made by John Ayers, the Keeper and himself a noted authority, who also contributes descriptive notes and an introductory essay on the collection. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

CURTIS, JULIA B. WITH AN ESSAY BY LITTLE, STEPHEN
Chinese Porcelains of the Seventeenth Century: Landscapes, Scholars' Motifs and Narratives
China Institute Gallery, New York. 1995. (ISBN: 0295974672). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 21.5 x 28 cm; 0.745 kg; 168 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations.; Used in very good condition. Minor signs of wear on the front and back cover. Interior with minor signs of wear. Very good condition overall.; Exhibition catalogue.; "According to Dr. Curtis, with the decline of the imperial court of the Ming dynasty in the early years of the seventeenth century, patronage of the kilns at Jingdezhen shifted to the scholar-official and merchant classes. Then, at the end of the century, as the Manchu established control over the country under a new dynasty, the Qing (1644-1911), patronage of the kilns was returned again to the imperial court. As a result, during much of the seventeenth century, the decorative schemes which appeared on the pots reflected the interests and concerns of non-imperial patronage groups - the scholar-officials and merchants. Taken in combination with the evidence of the painting on the pots themselves, the argument was compelling and intellectually elegant. As is so often the case in art exhibitions, the scholarship represents many years of hard work exploring collections, gathering information, trying out theoretical models, and constantly refining views and perceptions. This is certainly true of this exhibition; Julia Curtis has unstintingly thrown herself into the task for over a decade. In the writing of the catalogue, she has produced a noteworthy new body of research on the significance of the inscriptions, both prose and poetic, which are found on many of the porcelains." excerpt from the foreword by Candance J. Lewis, Director of the China Institute Gallery. Very Good/No Jacket.

The Alice M. Kaplan Collection
Advisory Council of the Departament of Art History and Archaeology, Columbia University. 1981. (ISBN: 0231053223). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket); 22.5 x 28.5 cm.; 1.1 Kg.; 217 pages with black and white and colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the interior and exterior. Lacks the dust jacket. Wear marks on the front, spine and back cover. Signs of wear on the interior. The hinge is slightly cracked at the front, but the binding remains firm."The collection that Alice Kaplan has assembled for herself and her family stands outside the mainstream of most contemporary art collections. Although small, it does not focus on any distinct area of art by embraces a broad spectrum and had perhaps, more in commom with museums or the Renaissance collections - the Kunstkammers or 'cabinets of curiosities'. Like them, the objects presented in this catalogue span many continents and periods. There are Ptolemaic, Indian, Chinese, African, Pre-Columbian, and French sculpures; European and American paintings; old master and modern drawings; and Peruvian and Scandinavian tapestries, even a contemporary macrame wall hanging. A collection of this king - some would call it encyclopedic, others ecletic - results partly from Alice Kaplan's many interests, but is primarly due to her adventurous spirit, disregard for fashion, and ability to respond to the intrinsic beauty of an object no matter where or when it was created." excerpt from the introduction by Linda Bantel. I-hsing ware is highly prized by the Chinese for its natural clay colors, simplicity of design, and elegance of execution. This exhibition is mainly concerned with top quality pieces that are particularly associated with scholars and artists. These pieces, made by the famous potters of I-hsing, are extremely rare and have long been treasured and collected by the Chinese. They were produced in small quantities, and are rarely found outside China. I-hsing ware has therefore received little attention in the West. In American museums, there are imperial porcelains by the thousands, but fine quality I-hsing pieces number fewer than one hundred." excerpt from the introduction. Good/No Jacket.

This was the first exhibition in Australia to present the complex artistic and cultural interactions between Europe and Asia from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries - a period known as the 'Age of Spices'.The exhibition included 300 outstanding and rarely-seen works of ceramics, decorative arts, furniture, metalware, paintings, prints and textiles from public and private collections in Australia, India, Portugal, Singapore and the United States. The works of art selected reveal how the international trade in spices and other exotic commodities inspired dialogue between Asian and European artists, a centuries old conversation whose heritage is the aesthetic globalism we know today.A highlight of the exhibition is the diverse range of Christian artwork created at ports such as Goa and Nagasaki on loan from Portugal and India as well as the inclusion of two works from the personal collection of Queen Adelaide (1792-1849) after whom the city of Adelaide is named. Another highlight is the artefacts retrieved from the Batavia, which sank off the Western Australian coast in the seventeenth century. Good/No Jacket.

The book is so arranged that essential parts can be read with profit by amateurs of art and cultural history. Few other ethnographic museums are in possession of such a large number of specimens whose museum history can with certainty be traced backed to the 17th and 18th centuries. This catalogue is meant to be a tool for the further exploration of our collection. The description we have given of each object is restricted to a bare minimum. We are aware, however, that some of these descriptions may be incorrect. We do this in the hope that our readers will respond by correcting our mistakes and by giving supplementary information." extract by the foreword by Torben Lundbaek, November 1979. A Gift of Heritage: Selection from the Xubaizhai Collection of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (2 Volumes)
Unban Council, Hong Kong. 1992, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9622151094). Hardcover. Book, English and Chinese text.; Hardcover (silk cloth without dust jacket - as issued. Two volumes in slipcase with two clasps.); 28 x 37 cm x 6.5 cm; 5.4 Kg; Volume I, 412 pages with colours illustrations and a few fold outs, including text by Christina Chu, and Painting and Callygraphy images; Volume II, 122 pages with the catalogue entries, each with a caption in English and Chinese.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the exterior of the slipcase, which is faded on the top and bottom of the front. The hardcover volumes have minor signs of wear. Interior as new. Both volumes include a stamp stating "Complementary" on the rear of the front cover.; "In view of Hong Kong's geographical and cultural affinity to the Guangdong province, more works of art of Guandgond origin are available here for acquisition than those of other provinces. As a result, the Museum has succeeded in building up one of the most representative collections of Guangdong painting and calligraphy, but its collection of works by artists of non-Guandong origin remains relatively weak. This is reflected in the displays in the Chinese Fine Art Gallery where only Guangdong paintings and calligraphy together with 20th - century Chinese paintings are on show, but no works earlier than 20th century by masters of non-Guangdong origin are represented. This phenomenon has changed since the receipt of the Xubaizhai Collection into the Museum. After the opening of the Xubaizhai Gallery of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy on 26 September 1992, visitors to the Museum will be able to view the gems of Chinese painting and calligraphy in the context of Chinese fine art in China as a whole. The Museum's collection of Chinese fine art majoring in works by Guangdong masters was much expanded in scope in 1989 when Mr. Low Chuck Tiew donated his collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy dating from the 5th to the 20th century to the Urban Council. Known as the Xubaizhai Collection of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, the collection was assembled by the determined efforts of Mr. Low over a period of fifty years. His aim was to build up a comprehensive coverage of Chinese painting particularly of the Ming and Qing periods. While the early periods in the development of Chinese painting and calligraphy were highlighted by pieces of Six Dynasties and Tang dynasty sutra writing and important works of Song and Yuan masters, the collection features a comprehensive coverage of works of major masters of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Masterpieces of the twentieth century by such masters as Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong and Xu Beihong are also represented in the Xubaizhai Collection. This generous gift from Mr. Low Chuck Tiew changes the status of the collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy in the Museum of Art. From a provincial collection of Guangdong painting and calligraphy, the collection now has risen to a standard of international distinction." excerpt from the preface by Laurence C.S. Surimono: Poetry & Image in Japanese Prints
Hotei Publishing, Amsterdam. 2000, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9074822347). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 25 x 29 cm; 1.2 Kg; 195 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Very good condition overall.; Catalogue from the exhibition Surimono - poezie & beeld in de Japanse prent, held at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam from 13 January 2001 to 1 April 2001.;"Some art collectors are in the enviable position of being ahead of their time - this allows them to choose freely from works they value before a larger group discovers them. J.A. Bierens de Haan was one such collector who bequeathed his extensive collection of surimono prints to the Rijksmuseum when he died in 1958. Surimono did not attract much attention for a considerable period ands he was able to bring together a beautiful collection of Japanese 'celebratory' prints. These very carefully-printed, colour woodcuts circulated almost exclusively amongst poetry clubs and enthusiasts in the first half of the 19th century, and were not made for the general market. It is thanks to this bequest that the Rijksmuseum is now in possession of an important collection of surimono created by such luminaries as Hokusai, Hokkei, Shunnman and Gakutei. Recently the collection was greatly expanded by a generous donation from J.H.W. Goslings, who started collecting surimono and erotic Japanese prints at the beginning of the 1980s. His gracious gesture was the inspiration for this exhibition, which also includes a number of prints from the collection Maartje Draak bequeathed to the Vereniging van Vrienden van Aziatishche Kunst (1995). Our intention is to present a selection from the Rijksmuseum's collection of more than 700 prints to a wider public. The poetic element is vital to surimono - the images were actually created in response to one or more verses written by members of poetry clubs - and we have therefore attempted to provide translations of the poems that appear on the prints, a difficult undertaking that is further complicated by the ambiguity and complexity of the poems. The translations included in this catalogue were produced with the assistance of a group of specialists in the field, to whom we are especially grateful, also for their suggestions which have improved the text in all sorts of ways." excerpt from the preface by Ronald de Leeuw, Director General, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. BOULAY, ANTHONY DU
Christie's Pictorial History of Chinese Ceramics
Phaidon, Christie's Limted. 1984, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0714880159). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English Text, 22 x 28.6 cm, 1.404 Kg; 319 pages with over 1000 illustrations, including 200 in colour.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket, which is price clipped and has a tear on the back. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Interior in very good condition.; Chinese ceramics are among the most popular works of art in the world. From the discoveries in the tombs of early emperors, it is clear that pottery and porcelain have had a high value in China for several millennia. In this book, Anthony du Boulay explains the history and development of ceramics in China from the Bronze Age to the nineteenth century. The hundreds of pictures are arranged in a historical sequence, each double page covering a definite period, place and style. The illustrations are grouped into chapters, covering periods, each of which is introduced by a brief and lucid text, outlining the historical trends. This reach subject has never before been treated with such a mass of illustration, giving collectors and students alike the opportunity to refer to styles and periods, and to compare and identify. Nearly all the pieces have passed through Christie's salerooms over recent years, and represent a cross-section of Chinese ware available to the collector. The illustrations thus show objects that are on the art market rather than pieces that can only be admired from a distance in museums. The book lists the auction values reached by the pieces illustrated, together with the date of the auction. Through this book the collector will become familiar with the appearance and the history of Chinese ceramics, the range of the illustrations creates an invaluable source of reference for every dealer, collector and student. The book is not only a useful tool; however, it also displays the beauty and variety of the work of Chinese potters throughout history. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

The Jeweled Isle: Art from Sri Lanka
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California. 2018. (ISBN: 9781943042128). Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback.; 0.7 Kg; 22.5 x 29.5 cm; 106 pages, including 1 map and 52 illustrations, most in color.; STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC.; Catalogue from the exhibition The Jeweled Isle: Art from Sri Lanka held at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from December 9, 2018 to June 23, 2019.; The Jeweled Isle: Art from Sri Lanka accompanies the first comprehensive survey of Sri Lankan art organized by an American museum. This catalogue showcases thirty-nine objects in LACMA's rarely displayed permanent collection - one of the finest and most extensive in the U.S.- which are included in the exhibition. It also includes two introductory essays, one by Donald Stadtner presenting an overview of Buddhist practice in Sri Lanka, and one by Lakshika Senarath Gamage on the art of the Divided Kingdoms period. The image of a bejeweled isle, first invoked in ancient accounts of Sri Lanka's precious gems, inspired numerous literary descriptions of the island's wealth and tropical beauty. The Jeweled Isle includes precious decorative objects fashioned from gold, silver, and ivory, as well as 19th-century photographs documenting Sri Lanka's extraordinary monuments, scenery, and flora. Several artworks convey the importance of sacred sites and relics in Sri Lankan Buddhist practice, while rare images of Hindu gods attest to the long and constant interaction between Sri Lanka and South India. Exquisite ivories, textiles, and furnishings further reflect nearly four centuries of European colonial presence in Sri Lanka and the dynamic interaction between local and foreign visual traditions. The exhibition presents a timely exploration and celebration of a geographically complex, ethnically diverse, and multicultural South Asian hub. New/No Jacket.

BRUCE, GRACE WU (CATALOGUE); YIPE, SHIANG YIU (INTRODUCTION)
Dreams of Chu Tan Chamber and the Romance with Huanghuali Wood: The Dr. S.Y. Yip Collection of Classic Chinese Furniture (Wang Fangyu)
Dr. S.Y. Yip. 1991, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9627101192). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (cloth without dust jacket in slipcase); 24.5 x 32 cm.; 1.7 Kg.; 168 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the slipcase and on the hardcover. Interior in very good condition with minor signs of wear. Very good condition overall.; "We are pleased that Dr. S. Y. Yip had graciously made possible an exhibition of his significant collection of classic Chinese furniture at the Art Gallery on the occasion of the publication of the catalogue of his collection. Consisting of sixty-eight items or eighty pieces, the collection has been assembled with meticulous care and descriminating taste. They belong to the period of Ming-style furniture which has been regarded as the golden age of classic Chinese furniture. In presenting this exhibition, The Art Gallery ventures into a topic of new-found importance. The critical study of Chinese furniture exemplifies the development of modern scholarship in redefining the scope and research methodology of Chinese art beyond the traditional 'high' arts of painting and calligraphy. Archaeological finds, woodblock illustrations, popular literature, and writings on elegant living, together with extant examples of furniture, provide rich resources for research into material culture of the age. Moreover, Chinese furniture, particularly those Ming-style furniture made of hardwood featured in the Dr. S. Y. Yip Collection, has been called the art of the joiners, who with consummate skill could make all kinds of complicated joints which account for the structural strength and perfect form of the pieces. It is also the art of the carvers, who gave elegant shape to the members and embellished them with mouldings and decorative motifs. Most importantly, classic Chinese furniture receives recognition in the modern age because of their aesthetic qualities and sculptural integrity, which speak not only of a bygone golden age, but also provide inspiration to the modern man. Treasures from an Unknown Reign: Shunzhi Porcelain 1644-1661
Art Services International, Alexandria, Virginia in association with the University of Washington Press, Seattle and London. 2002, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780295982137). Soft cover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Paperback; 22 x 29.5 cm; 1.3 kg; 252 pages with 125 colour and 51 black-and-white illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior. Minor edge wear. The interior has an ex-library stamp on title page, that also left a stamp mark on front free endpaper and on the following page. The remaining interior is in very good condition.; In June 1644, the Manchu conquerors of China entered Beijing and named a five-year-old boy to be the Shunzhi emperor, the first ruler of the Qing dynasty. This groundbreaking book and exhibition is the first to focus on porcelains from Shunzhi's reign (1644-61), which until recently have been little known and studied, as have other seventeenth-century ceramics from the great kiln center in Jingdezhen. New research, publications, and the coming to light of more high-quality dated pieces from the Shunzhi era have forced a re-examination of the so-called Transitional Period (1620-83). This catalogue and the travelling exhibition it documents brings together for the first time a collection of outstanding porcelain vessels from the Shunzhi reign, combined with recent advances in knowledge of the art and history of the early Qing. This book includes 87 examples of Jingdezhen porcelains, comprising a wide variety of types, decorative styles, and subjects, and including a number with dates in the Shunzhi era. The texts by leading scholars and a collector of seventeenth-century ceramics shed much new light on ceramics and their historical context. Six thematic essays and entries for each work discuss the evolution of porcelain and their markets during the period, new insights from the study of decorative subjects and calligraphy, the history of the Shunzhi reign, and the collecting of seventeenth-century porcelains in the West. New findings include the identification of many of the animals, plants, and scenes from history and literature painted on the porcelain. This book is an important addition to the libraries of those interested in the effects of politics on art, and collectors and students of porcelain and Chinese art, especially of the Qing dynasty.
