VALENSTEIN, SUZANNE G.
Ming Porcelains: A Retrospective
China House Gallery and The China Institute of America, New York. 1970. Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback; 20.5 x 23.5 cm; 0.3 Kg; 104 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations throughout.; Used book with signs of of wear on the exterior, namely wear marks on front cover, spine and back cover. Interior in good condition.; Catalogue from a loan exhibition from Museum and Private Collections in the United States, October 29, 1970 through January 31, 1971.; "In assembling an exhibition such as this, one is governed by many factors - the paramount being availability of objects. It is not suggested, therefore, that this is a definitive catalogue of Ming porcelains but, rather, a fairly comprehensive sampling of the development of Ming decorative technique. An attempt has been made to illustrate the broad scope of Ming wares, from superb pieces of what is considered 'Imperial' quality to relatively crude export ceramics. Particular effort was made to secure pieces which offer comparison: to juxtapose examples of the identical technique from two or more different periods, and to demonstrate the evolution in the manner of drawing various decorative elements." excerpt from the preface by Suzanne G. Valenstein, 1970. Good/No Jacket.

JORGE WELSH (ED.); AND JÖRG, PROFESSOR CHRISTIAAN (INTRODUCTORY ARTICLE)
Okimono: Japanese Porcelain Figures from the Edo Period
Jorge Welsh Research and Publishing. 2022, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781838216337). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover.; 23.5 x 29.7 cm.; 1.9 Kg.; 256 pages with 229 colour and 4 black & white illustrations.; Limited edition of 400 copies.; Exibition catalogue dedicated to the theme of Japanese porcelain in the form of human and animal figures, mostly produced for the export market during the second half of the 17th and 18th centuries. The animals represented are usually found amongst Japanese iconography, whilst the human figures are inspired by Japanese cosmopolitan society, deities and legendary local heroes. The nature of the trade for Japanese porcelain has determined the rarity of these pieces, which, combined with their decorative, formal beauty, as well as their quality, made them highly appreciated in Europe, and may also have appealed to the Japanese domestic market. This catalogue presents over 100 individual pieces, of which 75 are illustrated and discussed in the catalogue, along with an introductory article by Professor Christiaan Jörg. Through extensive documentation and supporting images, he analyses various aspects related to the theme of Japanese porcelain figures, including the origin and presence of these pieces in the most relevant European collections from the second half of the 17th century. New/No Jacket.

The Vases of the 'Hundred Treasures'
Jorge Welsh Research and Publishing. 2019, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780993506871). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket).; 23.5 x 29.7 cm.; 0.8 Kg.; 70 pages with 72 colour illustrations.; The Vases of the 'Hundred Treasures' accompanies the 20th annual exhibition of export art at Jorge Welsh Works of Art. This catalogue is part of the three-volume box set Treasures, alongside Pocket Treasures: Snuff Boxes from Past Times and Timeless Treasure: The Runic Calendar Staff. A pair of vases decorated with the Chinese subject of the 'hundred treasures' adapted to suit foreign tastes is the focus of the catalogue of the same name. Dating to the Yongzheng period (1723-1735) and depicting a continuous composition of antiques, flowers and animals, these famille rose vases are among the best export wares produced in the 18th century. Western designations for the 'hundred treasures' subject derive in a literal sense from the Chinese expression baibao, in which bai or 'hundred' stands for 'many', although the subject itself is historically known in China as 'antique objects' or bogu. Visually similar to the European 'still life' genre, bogu is more specific in that the objects depicted have a high value because of their age, quality and provenance. The Vases of the 'Hundred Treasures' brings to light the multiple auspicious designs that decorate these extraordinary vases. New/No Jacket.

Golden Burma: Art and Crafs of Myanmar
Muzeum Azji i Pacyfiku w Warszawie. 2010, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9788392985006). Soft cover. Book, English and Polish text.; Paperback.; 24.5 x 21.5 cm.; 0.4 Kg.; 100 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Edgewear.; Catalogue from an exhibition held at Galeria Azjatycka, ul. Freta, Warszawa from January to June 2010 with 187 works of art from Burma/Myanmar.; "I visited Burma for the first time in 1973. Only after 30 years I managed to come back to the "Golden Land" as that country is called. In September 2007, after my exploration trip to Myanmar (official name of Burma) I brought to Poland more than 100 objects of high artistic value representing Burmese traditional art and handicraft. It was the beginning of my new adventure with that Southeast Asia's country which resulted in creating a new, unique collection for the Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw. My new fascination forced me to widen my knowledge about Burma together with developing the collection of wonderful art. Following next two expeditions to Myanmar, in September and December 2008, I had amassed more than 400 further artifacts. Therefore the museum's collection, during a 2 years period, has became enriched with a significant group of objects representing Burmese art and handicraft, which until today never has been present neither in our museum nor in any other Polish museum. The most valuable artifacts consist of mostly ceremonial objects made of famous Burmese lacquer. Besides the lacquer-ware very interesting are sculptures, made of alabaster, polychrome and gilded as well as small, wooden or stone sculptures and relieves with a rich, diversified iconography depicting Bubbha, his apprentices and monks, as well as deities and heroes of Hindu myths and Burmese history. A very interesting group of objects is represented by traditional Burmese theater puppets: large-scale wooden marionettes, multicolored and dressed in textile costumes. They have flexible heads, arms, legs and even eyes. The other valuable artifacts consist of kammavasa manuscripts - Buddhist and Hindu books, textiles, decorations, works of art of various ethnic groups inhabiting Burma and very rare musical instruments, among them the ritual rain-making dong-son drum and a crocodile-shaped harp. Until recently the Burmese collection of the Asia and Pacific Museum was rather small. The new acquisitions created a real collection - valuable and diversified, unique and a real collection - valuable and diversified, unique and significant in the scale of Europe and the world." excerpt from the introductory text by Andrzej Wawrzyniak, Director of the Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw. The interior is in good condition, apart from the rear of the front and back cover that show signs of wear.; 3rd reprint of the 1st edition.; Catalogue from the first annual exhibition at The Southeast Asian Ceramic Society, June-July 1971, focusing on Southeast Asian wares exclusively, i.e. pottery of continental Southeast Asia exclusive of South China and Laos and of peninsular Thailand and Malaysia with Singapore.; "Most of the pots seen on the museum shelves were made either at the Sukhotai or Sawankoloke kilns of Thailand, or at the kilns in the northern part of the old kingdom of Annam (today is part of North Vietnam). The majority of pieces in both these groups belong to either the 14th or 15th centuries. The earliest wares on display, on the other hand are undoubtedly those here called 'Khmer', which date from the 10th to the 13th centuries, and which were made either in Cambodia or in Thai territory under Cambodian control. The latest are wares from the northern Thai kilns at Sankampaeng and Kalong dating from the 15th to the 16th centuries." excerpt from the introduction. Good/No Jacket.

WILLIS, DEBORAH (EDITOR)
Eastern Ceramics and Other Works of Art from the Collection of Gerald Reitlinger
Philip Wilson Publishers, London for the Ashmolean Museum and Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications. 1981, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0856671150). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket).; 18 x 25 cm; 0.7 Kg; 159 pages including black and white and colour illustrations throughout.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Signs of a sticker removed from the front free endpaper, which left the paper slightly damaged. On the bottom right side of the dust jacket there is also a part missing. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. Good readable copy.; Catalogue of the memorial Exhibition.; Oriental decorated wares and the subjects and styles of their decoration are the central theme of this catalogue, which presents a selection from the collection of the late Gerald Reitlinger. Through the superb exemples of Chinese "Transitional" style blue and white porcelain, Japanese Kakiemon and the whole range of Islamic ceramics from the ninth century onwards, it becomes clear that Reitlinger was an early and highly descerning specialists in several families of decorated ware. In each category, the decoration is described, illustrated and placed in the context of current knowledge in the field by an expert from the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. A second theme of the catalogue lies in Reitlinger's interest in tracing connections between various types of decorated ware. In particular, his Islamic collection demonstrates the influence of Far Eastern designs, as does the smaller collection of European ceramics, put together with a similar intention towards the end of his life. The late Gerald Reitlinger was perhaps best known for his volumes on The Economics of Taste. He was also a noted connoisseur and collector in other fields of art, as well as of Eastern Ceramics, from the 1920s until his death in 1979. He left his collection to the Ashmolean Museum a dew years before he died and part of it is to be exhibited there in 1981. This catalogue marks the exhibition and clearly illustrates the value of the Reitlinger Collection for amateur and specialists alike. Fair/Dust Jacket Included.

Rare Marks on Chinese Ceramics: A Joint Exhibition from the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, 19 November 1998 to 28 May 1999
School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in association with the Victoria and Albert Museum. 1998, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0728602903). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22 x 29 cm; 1.1 Kg; 182 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor sings of wear. Interior as new. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Catalogue from the joint exhibition from the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, 19 November 1998 to 28 May 1999.; Rare Marks on Chinese Ceramics is the first exhibition in Europe to concentrate on a special category of ceramic inscriptions which are known as owner's marks. From the 16th century people ordering ceramics from Jingdezhen and other kilns had the possibility of inscribing the wares with their own names. Such marks can tell us much about a ceramic's history including: who owned it and when, for which purpose it was ordered and why certain shape or colour was required. The exbition brings tothether important complementary objects from two of the finest collections of Chinese Ceramics in Europe, in the Percival David Foundation and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Together these objects help to present the first complete chronological overview of this fascinating yet little-researched subject. As New/Dust Jacket Included.

Imperial Taste: Chinese Ceramics from the Percival David Foundation
Copublished by Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Chronicle Books. 1989. (ISBN: 0877016127). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 23.4 x 30.8 cm; 0.820 Kg; 135 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear in the cover, spine and back cover. Cracked hinge, but the binding remains firmly attached. Ex-Library stamp on copyright page. The remaining interior is in good condition.; Exhibition catalogue.; The exquisite porcelains and stonewares created for China's imperial court unlike the more familiar ceramics made for export – were hardly known in the West until the twentieth century. We owe much of our awareness of these marvellous treasures to the disconcerting eye and intelligent action of Sir Percival David, the distinguished connoisseur who was one of the first to understand and preserve them. Sir Percival’s renowned collection, now housed at the University of London, forms an original source of information on the history, philosophy, and traditions of China. Many of the fifty-six priceless objects presented in this volume were once owned by Chinese emperors. All are extraordinary specimens. Ranging in date from the ninth to eighteenth centuries, they epitomize the sophistication of Chinese taste. Enlightening essays by scholars of Chinese art describe the worldwide significance of Chinese ceramics and review recent archaeological developments contributing to their study. Imperial Taste: Chinese Ceramics from the Percival David Foundation is published in association with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London.
