SOYOUNG, LEE,; WITH ESSAYS BY HABOUSH, JAHYUN KIM; HONG, SUNPYO AND CHANG, CHIN-SUNG
Art of the Korean Renaissance, 1400-1600
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. 2009, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780300148916). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 22.5 x 27.5 cm.; 1 Kg.; 140 pages with 99 illustrations of which 83 in colour.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior of the dust jacket and on the interior. Very good condition overall.; Cataloge from the exhibition "Art of the Korean Renaissance, 1400-1600" held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, March 17 - June 21, 2009.; This volume and the exhibition it accompanies present a compelling and eloquent account of the artistic and cultural renaissance in Korea during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The exquisite paintings, ceramics, metalware, lacquerware, and printed books featured in this publication are drawn from the holdings of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and other important museums, institutions, and private collections in Korea, the United States, Japan, and Europe. Many of these distinguished works have never before been seen in the United States. These masterpieces were produced under the aegis of Korea's revolutionary last dynasty, the Joseon, which was founded in 1392 and lasted until 1910. Within the dynasty's first two centuries, the Joseon rulers institutionalized the reorganization of civil and religious society undertaken by the previous Goryeo kings. Moreover, the new leaders sought to create a political, social, and cultural renewal following a period of Mongol domination and internal regression. As active patrons and collectors - and sometimes painters themselves - the Joseon royal family also brought a dynamic new vision to the nation's artistic traditions. Joseon society rested upon a reinterpretation of the Confucian principles that had long underpinned the East Asian world. Here, JaHyun Kim Haboush analyzes the initiatives that arose from the sustained this radically restructured civil society, including the development of an alphabet, hangeul, formulated to extend Neo-Confucian values to groups previously excluded from the wider culture; the diligent promotion of proper Neo-Confucian rites; and the relegation of Buddhism to the private sphere, often the royal and aristocratic courts. Soyoung Lee examines the uniquely Korean artistic currents, especially in painting and ceramics, that emerged during this period. Royal and elite patrons supported innovative secular art that transformed past traditions, both native and from the broader Confucian world, and encouraged the development of novel contemporary trends. Sunpyo Hong and Chin-Sung Chang explore the new paradigms formulated by Korean painters. Some recorded the faces and feasts of the newly created bureaucratic class, others engaged with the conventions of traditional Chinese landscape painting, while still others encoded protests and aspirations into seemingly tranquil genre subjects. The early Joseon dynasty gave rise to one of the most fertile cultural climates in Korean history. This is the first English-language publication to treat this singularly productive period. FORRER, MATTHI; WITH ESSAYS BY JUZO, SUZUKI AND D, SMITH II, HENRY
Hiroshige: Prints and Drawings
Prestel Verlag, Munich. 2011. (ISBN: 9783791345406). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 20 x 24.6 cm; 1 Kg; 256 pages with colour Illustrations throughout; Catalogue from the exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London from the 3rd of July to the 28th of September 1997.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior as new.; Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) holds an assured place in the history of world art as one of the greatest and best-loved masters of the woodblock print. Together with Katsushika Hokusai, he is the leading creator of landscape imagery in japanese printmaking. Acclaimed in the West as "the artist of mist, snow and rain", Hiroshige certainly possesses a poetic sensibility particularly well attuned to evoking atmospheric effects. Hiroshige is a master of the passing moment, subtly orchestrating a wide range of colours to articulate mood. Including maps, a chronology, glossary and bibliography, this volume offers an excellent introduction to the mainly-sided oeuvre of an artist who, perhaps more specifically "Japanese" than Hokusai, was described by Pisarro as a "marvellous Impressionist". Gems of the Green Vault in Dresden
Koehler & Amelang, Germany. 2010, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 3733802357). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 18 x 25.6 cm; 0,7 Kg; 176 pages with colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior with minor signs of wear.; Between 1723 and 1730 August the Strong - Elector of Saxony and King of Polland - had the "Green Vault", a unique collection of European arts and crafts, established in the rooms of his residential palace in Dresden. A major portion of these art treasures is today displayed in the Albertinum Museum. The select representative objects, shown primarily in new photographs in this pictorial volume, reflect the opulent splendor of exquisite exotic materials and the sensuous charm of each individual artwork. Some masterpieces are published here for the first time; others are represented from a unique viewpoint which results in surprising new insights. Noble boxes were opened by the photographer so that the viewer could catch a glimpse of their interior designs. Or the camera circles around a bronze group and in so doing captures its dance-like motion. Numerous selective enlargements exhibit the artful workmanship of the objects down to the smallest detail - features which are as fascinating today as they were at the time of creation. Chinese Bamboo Carving (Part I and II)
Urban Council. Hong Kong. 1978, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and Chinese text.; Hardcover (2 VOLUMES with dust jackets).; 22 x 26 cm.; 3.4 Kg.; Part I: 563 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations, 1978, ISBN 9622150128. Catalogue from an exhibition in The 3rd Festival of Asian Art presented by The Urban Council Hong Kong, 1978.; Part II 351 pages with black and white illustrations, 1982, ISBN 9622150411.; Used books with signs of wear on the exterior and dust jackets, that have signs of wear, are faded on spine and show edge wear. Tear on top of the back cover of volume I and at the bottom of the spine. Three scratches on spine of volume 2 that passed to the other side. Interior with signs of wear. Volume 1 as a few pages slightly bent on the top right side. Remaining interior in good condition.; "Although bamboo is a common plant found in many parts of the world, few peoples have taken such a keen interest in its use as a medium for artistic expression as the Chinese. Their fondness for bamboo has frequently been expressed in poetry, painting, calligraphy, carving and many other art forms. Since the Sung dynasty (960-1279), the Chinese have written of bamboo as the symbol of the "true gentleman", or scholar possessing the virtues of endurance, righteousness, humility and integrity. Chinese scholars always enjoy the presence of bamboo, whether it be the growing plant, or bamboo in painting, or an object made from part of the plant. It is not difficult, therefore, to preceive why bamboo carving has its own special significance in the Chinese art scene and why this art form was so closely associated with Chinese scholars. In fact, most of the carvings in the exhibition as illustrated in this volume were once the companions of Chinese scholars in their elegant studios. This first exhibition of bamboo carving, has been made possible only through the untiring efforts and support of our Museum Adviser, Dr. Ip Yee. We are deeply in debt to him not only for the generous loan of his fine collection of bamboo carvings, but also for the expert advice to the preparation of the exhibition and compilation of this handbook." excerpt from the acknowledgments, Part I, by Laurence C.S. Tam, September, 1978.; "In this volume the attempt is made to provide some basic facts, in English and in Chinese, on Chinese bamboo carvers and their carvings gleaned from Chinese literary records, and to do so in a manner that will facilitate reference. A list of 300 bamboo carvers has been compiled, and the sources for each are indicated after each biography for the use of those who may wish to research further. In order to facilitate positive identification of artists among the spectrum of their names, and pseudonyms, and other assumed names, a special index has been compiled with direct reference to the biographical notes of each artist. Part I of this book attempted a brief summary of the history of bamboo carving, and there, it was noted that the subject has so far been little studied. Here, in order to facilitate further study and research, a compilation of available material has been made, and the resulting three lists show the known items of bamboo carving of different periods, with the source of each recorded item indicated. These lists have been made up to enable easy access to the basic information on the earliest known items of bamboo carving, together with the recorded examples by known carvers and also those so far anonymous. In the exhibition 'Chinese Bamboo Carving', there were two hundred and eleven items on display. These were all fine works selected from collections from many parts of the world. All are illustrated in Part I of this book. Many other examples of fine bamboo carving exist in local Hong Kong collections, and these are now collected in this present volume in order to provide further visual examples of forms, techniques, pictorial motifs, composition, and even dating criteria." excerpt from Preface, Part II, by Laurence C.S. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Catalogue of an exhibition of one hundred selected pieces of Chingtechen Porcelain of the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties from the Collection of the T.Y. Chao Family Foundation.; "This present exhibition tries to portray the achievements of the potters of Chingtechen, the largest and the most important porcelain production centre in China. Of the twenty-one major kilns throughout the whole history of Chingtechen, fifteen belonged to the period from the Hung Wu era (1368-1398) to the Ch'ien Lung era (1736-1796), showing that the peak period of porcelain production at Chingtechen covered the greater part of the Ming Dynasty and the first half of the Ch'ing Dynasty. The one hundred selected items of fine Chinese ceramics in this exhibition were all produced during this peak period. Hence, they represent the major types and forms of porcelain wares produced by the Chingtechen kilns at their best, and were selected from the collection of the T.Y. Chao Family Foundation. They are all of a quality hard to excel." excerpt from the preface by Laurance C.S. TAM, Curator, Hong Kong Museum of Art. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Kawamura Bumpo: Artist of Two Worlds
The University Gallery Leeds, United Kingdom. 2003, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 1874331316). Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback.; 24.5 x 30 cm.; 0.4 Kg.; 56 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Very good condition overall.; "This book is the third in our series of studies devoted to life and culture in Japan. The first, Mirror of the Stage (1996), examined the prolific production of actor prints by Kunisada; the second, On the Margins of the City (1999), used contemporary prints and books as means of exploring recreation and entertainment in some of the peripheral urban districts of Edo, or present-day Tokyo. By contrast, this third study narrows its focus to a single, somewhat elusive figure from Kyoto, who flourished during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It distinguishes itself thus as the first study devoted entirely to the subject of Kawamura Bumpo and his artistic practice." excerpt from the foreword by Hilary Diaper, Keeper of the University Art Collections and Gallery. The Silk Road in Ningxia
University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong. 2008. (ISBN: 9789628038787). Hardcover. Book, Chinese and English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued).; 23.5 x 31 cm; 1.3 kg; 199 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior. Interior as new.; Catalogue from the exhibition co-presented by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Museum and the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong from 13 December 2008 to 15 of March 2009.; "The northwest Silk Road was the most important overland route linking ancient China with the outside world in the one thousand five hundred-period, spanning the Han (206 BCE-CE 220) to the Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties, Over this long period, foreigners and other non-Chinese ethnic minorities entered Gansu via Xinjiang, turning southeast towards Ningxia and Shaansi, and the ancient Tang capital of Chang'an. The Silk Road was the result of political and military endeavour. Begun during the Han dynasty to combat the Huns, it was also important during the Tang dynasty (618-907) in opposing the Turks. The Ningxia section of the route had particular strategic significance because of its proximity to the political and economic centre of Chang'an, thus control over the area was hotly contested between the Han Chinese and non-Chinese ethnic minorities. Relics found along the Silk Road include Indian Buddhist sculptures, Persian-Sassanian motifs and images of the whirling dervish dance of Samarkand. Buddhist painting by Cao Zhongda, a Sogdian from Kabudhan (Gubdan), north of the Zerafshan River, of the Northern Qi dynasty (550-577), are characterized by the depiction of pleated garments that drape the body closely, as if the figure were emerging from water. This "Cao Style" greatly influenced Chinese Buddhist art." excerpt from the foreword by YEUNG Chun-rong, Director, University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, 11 November 2008. It is very cold. But underground, on the walls of the Liao dynasty tombs we visit, vibrant color and lively figures give warmth. A child climbs to grab fruit from a bowl, a woman pauses in a doorway, sprigs of flowers are painted on a tomb's dome, musicians play. The tomb objects from the ninth to the twelfth centuries in this exhibition are depicted on the walls of such chambers. Objects such as fine ceramic pots and bowls, tea services, and furniture present a story of daily life among people of the Liao and Song dynasties and how they thought of themselves. This is the first exhibition in the United States to present Liao culture in context." excerpt from the introduction by Susan Fillin-Yeh. Fine/No Jacket.

Often deriving out of a functional past, much of today's wood art works as abstract sculpture, responding intuitively and uniquely to the rich and varied materials available to the wood artist. Nowhere is the vision, audacity, technical mastery, and sophistication of contemporary wood art better represented than in the collection of Robert Bohlen and Lilian Montalto Bohlen. Employing many different types of wood from the commonplace to the exotic as well as different carving, turning, and finishing techniques, the artists represented have created works that amuse, astonish, ans inspire. Their efforts broaden our understanding of what art can be and enrich our experience of the world around us, challenging us anew to think about materials, forms, and textures. Through essays and interviews that explore the evolution of wood art as well as current concerns and practices in the field. This book offers a comprehensive look at a unique contemporary art form at a vital moment in its evolution. Its publication is a welcome event for those who already know and love wood art - and a revelation to those who have not yet fully explored its possibilities. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

LIMITED EDITION OF 1500 COPIES OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 1.; The Topkapi Saray Museum collection of Chinese Ceramics is one of the largest and most important in the whole world, yet comparatively little of it has ever been published. The wares assembled here present a continuous review of porcelains made for export from the 13th century to the 19th century which, in its range of styles and designs, is without equal in any other surviving collection. With some 4,500 pieces dating from the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and a further 5,500 from the Qing, the present three-volume work covering the entire collection constitutes the most extensively illustrated book on Chinese ceramics yet published and provides an unrivaled source for dating and the study of design. The main part of the work consists of a complete and definitive catalogue in which every piece is itemised. Each entry is accompanied by one or more monochrome illustrations, scaled in size according to importance, and many are also shown in colour. The work contains 5,000 illustrations in all, of which 200 are large-size colour plates. The volumes divide the catalogue into three major sections, "Celadon Wares", "Yuan and Ming Porcelains" and "Qing Porcelains". These sections and their sub-divisions are arranged chronologically and are prefaced by extensive introductions by Regina Krahl and John Ayers. Virtually all the celadon wares are products of the famous Longquan kilns and the majority date from the 14th and 15th centuries; numbering in all some 1,350 pieces, they comprise the most extensive body of such material in existence. In blue-and-white and white wares of the 14th and early 15th centuries, too, which are widely regarded as the finest products of the Yuan and early Ming, the group of 125 pieces has no rival in size or quality, while the representation of later Ming export blue-and-white is rich in the extreme; the polychrome and monochrome classes of Ming ware also including some notable rarities. As for the Qing wares of all categories, these two comprise a uniquely extensive range of designs, still virtually unpublished, and of great value to students of Chinese porcelain. The first volume is introduced by a series of essays surveying the background to the collection and various aspects of the ceramics themselves. Dr. Unsal Yucel and Dr. Julian Raby throw new light on how porcelains both entered and left the palace, in what quantities and at what dates; Dr. Raby also contributes a penetrating examination of the nature of Ottoman taste in this field, showing how porcelain was regarded at the Court, and for what purposes and on what occasions it was used. Further important articles examine in detail the use of Chinese and Arabic marks on the porcelains. A full working bibliography, a concordance and a thorough index complete the work. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Good readable copy.; "This handbook has been prepared to complement the new installation, 'Chinese Ceramics through the Millennia' on the balcony of the Great Hall of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition, a survey of the development of the ceramic art in China from early to modern times, draws almost entirely upon the more than 4,500 examples of Chinese pottery in the Museum collection. Chinese ceramic history, which spans over seven thousand years, is sketched here to acquaint the visitor with the chronological background of the objects displayed. An understanding of the technology developed to create these wares is also central to an enjoyment of them and so is sum- marized here as well. Certain wares not represented in the Metropolitan collection are important links in the chain of Chinese ceramics, and a sampling of such pieces from other collections is shown in the text. The thread of tradition and innovation that winds through the entire history of Chinese ceramics is the overwhelming theme in the development of the Chinese potter's art and in this survey. Archeological discoveries made in recent years, some of which have made necessary a complete rewriting of particular aspects of Chinese ceramic history, are noted. Since 1949, an enormous amount of archeological activity has taken place in China, and I have no doubt that in the next few decades excavations will provide even more important material for art historians. Some more recent or less well- known references have been provided in footnotes for those who wish to pursue a given subject in more detail." excerpt from the preface by Suzanne G. Valenstein, Febraury, 1975. Good/No Jacket.
