MEDLEY, MARGARET
Illustrated Catalogue of Ming Polychrome Wares in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art
School of Oriental and African Studies, Percival David Foundation of Chinese Ar, London. 1966. Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback.; 15,5 x 24,5 cm; 0.2 Kg; 79 pages plus addendum with 20 pages, with black and white illustrations.; Section 5 of the catalogue series depicting the collection of the Percival David Collection.; "Ming polychrome enamelled wares of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries have for long been familiar to students and collectors in Europe and America, but only from the nineteen-twenties onward have serious attempts been made to trace the development of style and technique and to justify attributions to the fifteenth century. The Percival David Collection contains an unsurpassed study group of Ming polychromes, which by means of comparison with others in Great Britain, America and Japan has enabled the curator to fill some of the many gaps of our knowledge, and to make some adjustments in earlier attributions. Miss Medley has provided in her introduction a thoughtful summary of the history of this important class, as far as this is possible at present, clarifying in particular the evolution from tou-ts'ai to wu-ts'ai. The Concordance of Types on pages xxvii to xxx will assist students to follow her argument and to compare related pieces." excerpt from the foreword by S. Howard Hansford, Heaf of the Foundation, January, 1966. Good/No Jacket.

TREDE, MELANIE AND BICHLER, LORENZ
Hiroshige: One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
Taschen GmbH, Koln. 2010. (ISBN: 9783836521208). Hardcover. Book, English text; Japanese binding in hardcover case with two clasps.; 26.2 x 31.5 cm, 2 Kg, 272 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the hardcover case. Due to use the binding is slightly curved on the right side first page of the binding. Very good copy.; Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Literally meaning "pictures of the floating world" ukiyo-e was a particular genre of art that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries and came to characterize the Western world's visual idea of Japan. In many ways images of hedonism, ukiyo-e scenes often represented the bright lights and attractions of Edo (modern-day Tokyo): beautiful women, actors and wrestlers, city life, and spectacular landscapes. Though he captured a variety of subjects, Hiroshige was most famous for landscapes, with a final masterpiece series known as "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" (1856-1858), which depicted various scenes of the city through the seasons, from bustling shopping streets to splendid cherry orchards. This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo. It pairs each of the 120 illustrations with a description, allowing readers to immerse themselves in these beautiful, vibrant vistas that became paradigms of Japonisme and inspired Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Art Nouveau artists alike, from Vincent van Gogh to James McNeill Whistler. COHEN, MICHAEL; AND MOTLEY, WILLIAM; FUCHS II, RONALD W. (FOREWORD)
Mandarin and Menagerie, Chinese and Japanese Export Ceramic Figures, Volume I: The James E. Sowell Collection
Cohen & Cohen, Reigate, Surrey, United Kingdom. 2008, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780953718597). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 25.5 x 32 cm; 2,409 kg; 303 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; This book covers the largest and most important collection of Chinese and Export figures currently existing in the world. Collected by James E. Sowell of Dallas, Texas, there are over 170 items including over 50 bird figures, a dozen dogs, and a unique pair of leopards possibly made for the Imperial Summer Palace. It includes a history of the European trade with Canton and contains an informative guide to the dating of many of these pieces, with many pictures of the bases of the figures. The book catalogues the James E. Sowell collection in detail, arraging the animals according to approximate zoological taxanomic groups and commenting on some of the scientific knowledge available at the time. Traditional theory says that the Chinese potters were simply copying European species and models but the book proposes that, with a few significant exceptions, the resulting porcelain are inspired by Chinese fauna. Mainly consisting of Chinese export figures of the 17th, 18th and early 19th century, there are also a few realted figures from Japanese kilns. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Chinese Porcelain Collections in the Near East: Topkapi and Ardebil (3 Volume Set)
Hong Kong University Press. 1981, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (3 volume set in slipcase with two clasps.).; 23 x 30.5 cm; 7 Kg; Black and white and a few colour illustrations throughout.; Volume I-Introduction, ISBN 962-209-004-4, 273 pages; Volume II-The Topkapi Palace Museum, ISBN 962-209-005-2, 282 pages; Volume III-The Ardebil Shrine Collection, ISBN 962-209-006-0, 372 pages.; Used books with signs of wear on the interior and exterior, as well as the slipcase. The lettering on the front cover and spine is slightly worn. Very good set overall. Interior as new, except for stamps from a previous owner on the rear of the front cover of each volume. The interior of the slipcase is also stamped.; "This volume, together with the one on the collection of Chinese porcelain from the Topkapi Sarayi in Istambul and the Ardebil Shrine in Tehran, was first published by Gakugei Shorin, Tokyo, in 1972 in a three-volume Japanese limited edition, now out of print. This completely revised and rearranged edition in English preserves the scope and all the illustrations of the original edition. In connection with the Topkapi and Ardebil collections special mention must be made to the 1930 Topkapi catalogue by Ernst Zimmermann, John Alexander Pope (Topkapi in 1952 and the Ardebil 1956), as well as articles by Mehdi Bahrami, Sir Percival David, R.L. Hobson and Soame Jenyns. All these have contributed much to my understanding of the collections and their history" excerpt from Volume I.; "When I first stepped into the exhibition room of the Topkpai Saray Museum I was surprised. About five thousand pieces of Chinese porcelain were on display but an even greater number, estimated at six thousand pieces, were still stored in three basements. But the size of the collection is matched in importance by its value, for there are some forty pieces in the collection which are among the finest Chinese blue-and-white ware, made in the fourteenth century. We have had to revise our previous belief the Yuan period was a dark age because of these excellent Yuan pieces which have survived in this collection so far away from China. The blue-and-white porcelain from the Yuan to the Ch'ing period is the largest group in the Topkapi collection but there are also celadons, white, yellow, blue, brown, and polychrome wares. So, to the baptism of Istanbul with the various cultures, Hittite, Egyptian, Roman, Byzantine, Persian, and Islamic, one must now add that of a Chinese ceramic culture. The porcelain of many kinds dates from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century and can be compared in size and quality with the best collections elsewhere." excerpt from Volume II; "What we have come to know as the Ardebil collection of Chinese porcelain consists of about eight hundred pieces of blue-and-white, celadon, polychrome and other porcelains, nearly all of which are not now at Ardebil. Most of these pieces have been removed to the Archaeological Museum in Tehran. The Ardebil collection has special importance, not only because such a collection was made and preserved at all, near the Caspian Sea so far from its place of manufacture in China, but also because it is know that the main collection dates from not later than 1611 when Shab Abbas presented it to the Shrine in the town of Ardebil from which it takes its name and where it was housed until 1935. Even now the important collection, which includes such treasures as nearly forty pieces of fourteenth-century blue-and-white Chinese porcelain, is only partially known. I hope this volume will be welcomed for its extensive illustrations, many in colour, of a large part of the collection, including many of which have not been published before. In addition I have illustrated pieces from the collection which are now in Isfahan and Tabriz. It is reasonable to assume that the latest pieces could not be dated later than the thirty-fifth year of the Wan-li period of the Ming dynasty and the earliest in the middle of the fourteenth century." excerpt from Volume III. This period was equally striking for Macao's history and for its quality as an international port of commerce and a port between two empires, the Portuguese and the Chinese. The exhibition One King and Three Emperors - Portugal, China and Macao in the time of D. João V, curated by Jorge Santos Alves, marks the 40th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Portugal and China, the 20th anniversary of the transfer of powers. in Macau and the 450th anniversary of the Macao Holy House of Mercy. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR HUGH MOSS.; "In this book I believe Hugh Moss has made a quite conclusive case for the authenticity of the yu chih marked porcelains. By doing so he has corrected a far-reaching error of recent Western scholarship in the field of Ch'ing porcelain. An essential part of his case rests on the distinction between the works of three main centres of decoration of Ch'ing porcelain manufactured at Ching-tê Chên. It has, perhaps, been the failure to make that distinction which has caused so much trouble in this most dificult area of Chinese ceramic study. I should also like to observe, with the privilege of hindsight of someone who in the past accepted unquestioningly the dismissal of the yu chic wares, that the traditionally accepted opinion of Chinese scholars should perhaps never have been so readily rejected, nor so little attention given to positive re-attribution of the yu chic wares to some later period, as is necessary if their authenticity is to be denied. NATIONAL PALACE MUSEUM, TAIPEI COUNTY, TAIWAN, R.O.C.
Catalog of the Special Exhibition of K'Ang-Hsi, Yung-Cheng and Chi'En-Lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch'Ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum
National Palace Museum, Taipei County, Taiwan, R.O.C. 1988, 2nd Edition. Soft cover. Book, Chinese and English text and captions.; Paperback; 24.8 x 25.2 cm; 0.983 Kg; 197 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear, namely scuffs on the front cover, spine and back cover. Edgeworn. Minor signs of wear in the interior.; Catalogue from an exhibition at the National Palace Museum, Taipei in 1986.; "This exhibit takes the famous ware of K'ang-shi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung reigns during the flourishing Ch'ing period to be the theme of an exhibit which display the best of the best. In all 171 object are on view. The glazes used on many of these wares followed Sung, Yuan, and Ming formulas. They are so close as to be difficult to tell apart from earlier glazes. On the other hand, there are newly created red glazes, famille rose, and painted enamels glazes which have very distinct and beautiful colors. They are extremely complicated, marvelously, incomparably crafted. The shapes of some of the vessels imitate famous Ting, Ju, Kuan and Ko wares with easy fluency. At times they reproduce the shapes of ancient Chinese ritual bronzes - particularly the ting, yi, tsun, and lei vessel types. Utensils for the scholar's studio were produced, like brush handles, ink rests, water containers, seals, all without any hesitation or technical limitations. When bronze, laquer, cloisonne enamel or wood was imitated, the physical qualities of the material were all captured and there is a great resemblance. The craftsmen's abilities to manipulate clay was miraculous and bordered on the divine." excerpt from the foreword by Ch'in Hsiao-yi, Director, October 1986. Good/No Jacket.

Chinese Cultural Art Treasures: National Palace Museum Illustrated Handbook
The National Palace Museum, Republic of China. 1971, 5th or later Edition. Hardcover. Interior in very good condition.; "Throughout the past forty years, China's ancient cultural treasures have been carefully preserved. Those art treasures that were removed to Taiwan date from as early as the Sang and Chou dynasties, and as late as the Ming and Ching dynasties. These treasures, dating from every period in Chinese history, are of the finest quality. To enable both Chinese and foreign scholars to fully understand the collection, and to make connoisseurship and research more convenient, the Palace Museum selected a group of choice art objects, and in November 1965, published a handbook entitled, Chinese Cultural Art Treasures. Within a few months every copy of the first edition of the handbook had been sold. It is the hope of the Museum that this second edition of the handbook, which corrects those typographical errors that inadvertently were included in the first edtiion, will further expand the Museum's contribution to society." excerpt from the foreword to the second edition by Chiang Fu-tsung, Director, April 1966, Taipei. The collection boasts of such rare treasures as Sung dynasty Ju ware the most exquisite examples of celadon ware and fine-enamelled ware of the Ch'ing dynasty which represent the apogee of the art of porcelain making reached in the last dynasty. With the exception of those pieces in the National Palace Museum there are very few examples of these fine porcelains presently extant, a factor contributing to the interest and high esteem shown in the first volume of Masterworks of Chinese Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, published in 1969. In volume II we have selected fifty items from the Yuan, Ming and Ch'ing dynasties. Although it was not possible in these two volumes to show all the great porcelain treasures found in the collection of the National Palace Museum it is possible to get a good idea of our collection from these representative samples." preface by Chiang Fu-tsung, Director, April, 1973, Taipei, Republic of China. Calligraphy is the art of writing characters in an expressive manner employing the use of the brush. The most ancient written characters were written on oracle bones, or were inscriptions on bronze vessels found in the Shang and Zhou dynasties. It was during the late Warring States, Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties that scripts such as official, cursive, running and regular scripts developed. Thus a multi-script system evolved for Chinese written characters. Different scripts were used for different regions and for different times, and this diversity let newer forms take root and flower." excerpt from the introduction. Good/No Jacket.
