ADDIS, JOHN (INTRODUCTION)
Exhibition of Chinese Blue and White Porcelain and Related Underglaze Red
The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong. 1975, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued); 19 x 25.5 cm; 0.5 Kg; 96 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations throughout.; Used book with minor signs of wear on the exterior. Interior in very good condition.; "The present exhibition, although far from being comprehensive, does cover with a certain uneveness, the period from Yuan to late Ching. However, the "Transitional" period is very well represented. There are also sufficient "Export" wares, which are not necessarily of the same period, to demonstrate the varying tastes of South-east Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Europe and Japan. The underglaze red pieces illustrate the close relationship that has always existed between this class and underglaze blue. However, it is possible in this exhibition to follow step by step the changes in shape, designs and motifs that took place reign by reign, dynasty by dynasty and also to trace the changes in the shades and intensities of the cobalt blue, and the differences in the glazes and porcelain bodies of Yuan to Ching." excerpt from the preface by Philip Wen-Chee Mao, President, Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, 1975. CORT, LOUISE ALLISON; AND STUART, JAN; WITH A CONTRIBUTION BY TAM, LAURENCE CHI-SING
Joined Colours: Decoration and Meaning in Chinese Porcelain. Ceramics from Collectors in the Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.in association with Tai Yip Company, Hong Kong. 1993. (ISBN: 9623210248). Soft cover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Paperback; 21.8 x 28.2 cm; 0.720 Kg; 158 pages with 165 colour plates and 7 black-and-white illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear; Catalogue from the exhibition at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, January 31-November 28, 1993.; The Gemlike beauty of multicoloured enamel decoration on white porcelain - sometimes akin to painting, sometimes echoing the rich texture of silk brocades, lacquers, and cloisonne - is the focus of this volume of seventy-nine Chinese porcelains of the Ming and Qing dynasties drawn from renowned collections of members of the Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong. Although polychrome porcelain is most often examined from the perspectives of authenticity, dating, and stylistic development, this study addresses the crucial issue of meaning. Through an exploration of the emblematic significance of individual colours and of colour combinations (including the famed doucai color scheme from which this book takes its name) and the auspicious meaning of imagery, the authors have placed these impressive ceramics within a framework of Chinese cultural values. The catalogue is lavishly illustrated in colour, with detailed descriptions of the objects focusing on decoration and the use of under - and overglazed enamels. Reign marks are illustrated for each piece. This book will be of great interest to collectors and students of porcelain, scholars, and all those who love ceramics and Chinese art. AYERS, JOHN
The Baur Collection, Geneva: Japanese Ceramics
Collections Baur, Genčve. 1982, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and French text.; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in slipcase); 24 x 30 cm; 1.6 Kg; 240 pages with colour and black and white illustrations throughout.; ISBN: 2-88031-004-X.; Limited edition of 1600 copies, of which this is 614.; Used book in very good condition. Looks as new. Minor signs of wear on the slipcase.; "Among the 1932 acquisitions Mr. Baur restricted the choice partly to enamelled porcelains from Arita kilns and from Nabeshima, which found ready favour among Western collectors, adding also various later, nineteenth century porcelain wares which included in particular examples of Hirado, Kameyama and Kutani; and besides these he also sent a variety of enamelled pottery belonging to the Kyoto tradition, such as Kiyomizu, Awata and Banko. In 1933, the mixture remained the same - as indeed it was to do during the following years down to 1939 - with pieces by other potters working in similar styles, such as Eiraku. Altogether these wares include many of unusual interest, and of types not widely available in Western collections. But in any assessment of the merits of the collection there can be little doubt that pride of place must be given to the group of early porcelains from Arita and above all, to those made for the princely house of Nabeshima, which both in quality and in numbers are hardly to be matched in any collection outside Japan itself." excerpt from the introduction by John Ayers, 1982. The exterior of the slipcase show signs of wear, and is worn at the top right corner. The interior of both volumes looks as new. Includes the pictorial paper wrapped around the slipcase, which has tears on the bottom and top.; Catalogue from the exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Art of 163 objects, the majority are products of the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen.; "The Hong Kong Museum of Art is proud to present an exhibition of pieces selected from the Tianminlou Collection of Chinese porcelain, a collection that has been assembled over the last four decades with meticulous care and discriminating taste. The exhibition features sixty-five pieces of blue and white, fifty-four pieces of polychrome and forty-four pieces of monochrome, totalling one hundred and sixty-tree objects dating from the 13th to the 18th century, they are the very best of Mr. Ko Shih Chao's acquisitions made in the last twenty years. A large majority of the pieces are products of the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen. They present a spectrum of techniques and styles, and tell the story to the constant striving by potters of Jingdezhen to refine the porcelain body, to master the intricacies of firing, and to invent new glazes from metals, a forth element provided by nature. It is an extraordinary chapter - and the climatic chapter - from the seven-thousand year saga of ceramics. Through the generosity of Mr. Ko Shih Chao the Tianminlou Collection has been put in public view. In addition to lending his collection for exhibition, Mr. Ko has also sponsored the publication of the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition. To the catalogue itself he has contributed many entries as well as one of the essays. The value of the catalogue has been enhanced by the essays contributed by Mr. John Ayers, Mr Julian Thompson and Mr Laurence Tam. It was Mr. Ko Shih Chao idea to include in the catalogue panoramic illustrations of a number of pieces so that the swept and subtlety of their designs can be fully appreciated. The catalogue is itself a visual delight thanks to the superb technique of the photographers: Mr Ogawa Tadahiro who did the panoramic photographs, Mr Wakisaka Susumu who took most of the colour transparencies for Volume I of the catalogue.
