HERVOUET, FRANCOIS; HERVOUET, NICOLE; AND BRUNEAU, YVES
La Porcelaine Des Compagnie Des Indes a Décor Occidental
Flammarion, Paris. 1986, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 2080109901). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, French text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25 x 33.9 cm; 2.76 Kg; 432 pages with 1206 illustrations, 100 in colour.; Minor signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover of the dust jacket.; This reference book almost functions as an encyclopaedia, identifying and providing possible dates to a very large range of western scenes painted on Chinese porcelain, commissioned through the East India Companies and that arrived in Europe, and later in the United States, during the 18th century. The idea of asking craftsmen of the Middle Kingdom to paint porcelain according to their own taste emerged very early in the minds of those Europeans who travelled to the Far East. For example, to paint a boat on which they had been sailing for six months on a bowl, or to reproduce an engraving, the portrait of a loved one, among others. In short, Westerners asked for anything that, for one reason or another (and the diversity of orders is incredible), was important to perpetuate through time in an original way. As they returned to their homelands, bringing with them these beautiful objects that had been specially ordered to Chinese artists and that were very much cherished, these began to be used or functioned as memory tokens. Although several books have been written about Chinese export porcelain, particularly since the Second World War, it should be noted that no book had aimed at functioning as an 'inventory' of western decoration on Chinese porcelain destined to the western market. This book intends to serve as a catalogue of all the decorations ordered to be painted on porcelain by the East India Companies of all of the countries. With a short margin of error, we estimate that there should be no more than 1.300 different representations around the world and this book assembles about nine-tenths. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

OORT, H.A. VAN
Chinese Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries
Uitgeversmaatschappij De Tijdstroom b.v. Lochem, The Netherlands. 1977, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9060876407). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 17 x 25 cm; 0.542 Kg; 198 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations.; The dust jacket has minor chips, tears and scuffs. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. The interior is in very good condition.; Between the reign of Chia-Ch'ing and the Japanese invasion in 1937 much porcelain was made in China, albeit of very diverse quality. It is, in fact, a strange phenomenon that, up to now, most experts have neglected this span of approximately 150 years during which so many interesting pieces were made. In this book the author makes an attempt, for the first time, to bring order into the porcelains of the various periods concerned and to show their interrelationships as well as their relationships to earlier periods. Some of the porcelain is undoubtedly rather poor, but many pieces, especially those produced during the second and third decades of this century, are of superior quality. Highly interesting developments are recorded in the production of porcelain at this time, which reaches an astonishing peak of excellence during the Hung-hsien reign-period in 1916. Even during the years of upheaval after this year porcelain of great interest continued to me made. The most important aspects of this book are the many illustrations, the abundance of hitherto unpublished marks - which will allow collectors to determine many pieces - and the exhaustive index. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

OORT, H.A. VAN
The Porcelain of Hung-Hsien: A Study of the Socio-Cultural Background and Some Characteristics of the Porcelain Produced at Chingtechen During the Imperial Reign of Yüan Shih-K'Ai (1916)
N.V. Uitgeversmaatschappij De Tijdstroom Lochem. 1970, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 16.5 x 24.5 cm.; 0.831 Kg.; 301 pages with black and white and one colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that has a tear on the back cover. Signs of wear on the interior. Overall in good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The object of this book is to broaden the range of aesthetic enjoyment in the field of Chinese porcelain. First of all the writer has dealt once and for all with the myth that after Ch'ien-lung almost no porcelain worthy of our attention was produced any more. Secondly, it was shown that the revival in the porcelain industry at the end of the Ch'ing dynasty obtained a heavy stimulus from Yuan Shik-k'ai, the first President of the Republic of China. This culminated in the production of very fine porcelain bearing the reign mark HUNG-HSIEN of his usurped emperorship in 1916. Finally we see that after the death of Yuan Shik-k'ai the porcelain production did not suddenly come to a standstill but instead continued to turn out ware that can rival some of the best pieces of the past. In order to corroborate this point of view, the revival of porcelain art is discussed against the background of social and cultural change. In particular attention is drawn to the importance these high technical achievements have for the production of porcelain marked with better known reign marks of previous periods. The thesis set forth in the book is elucidated by illustrations covering each period from the middle of last century right up to the People's Republic. Good.

At the end of the book, the contributors included a section of 'further reading, some bibliographical notes', which provides the reader with an opportunity of knowing where to look for more information on this special type of wares. Kraak Porcelain: A Moment in the History of Trade
Bamboo Publishing Ltd, London. 1989, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 1870076095). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25 x 31.5 cm, 1.860 Kg; 256 pages with 298 colour and black and white plates, maps and drawings, bibliography and index. Foreword by Dr. Christian J.A. Jorg, Groninger Museum.; Used book in good condition with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; When two captured portuguese merchantmen were brought to The Netherlands in the early seventeenth century, their cargoes of Chinese porcelain were enthusiastically received by the Dutch. These plates, dishes and bowls, decorated in blue and white ground, were named 'Kraak Porcelain', a name which has long since been associated with a particular type of Chinese export porcelain, not only by the Dutch but also by other countries. Despite the enduring and widespread appeal of Oriental ceramics in The Netherlands and elsewhere, no scholar has yet concentrated exclusively on the topic of Kraak porcelain, with the result that this book represents the first comprehensive monograph available on the subject. Maura Rinaldi's exhaustive study of Kraak porcelain, the culmination of more than five years of research and a world-wide search for pieces, goes much further than most monographs on ceramics by including all relevant material to the study of Kraak porcelain. The four sections of the book, dealing with the historical background, development of the ceramic industry and trade, the numerous categories and classifications of Kraak and its imitations, are all extensively illustrated. Kraak Porcelain will prove to be an invaluable reference book for collectors, scholars, and students, as well as general readers with a keen interest in Oriental ceramics. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

SCHEURLEER, D. F. LUNSINGH
Chinese Export Porcelain: Chine de Commande
Pitman Publishing Corporation, New York / Toronto / London. 1974. (ISBN: 0273070835). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dustjacket); 255 pages with black and white and colour illustrations; 19.5 x 25.2 cm; 1.1 Kg; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket. The dust jacket has a tear on the top of the spine. The interior has two ex-library stamps, one on title page and another on the following page. The remaining interior is in very good condition.; The late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century porcelain made in China for export to Europe and later to the United States, sometimes referred to as "Chine de Commande", has a special charm: perhaps the charm of familiarity, for the early pieces of these wares so often served as models for European pottery and porcelain; and the later pieces attract by their combination of fine porcelain from China with shape or decoration from the West. This is the first work in English dealing exhaustively with Chinese export porcelain. In recent years the wares have increased greatly in popularity and in value, and really fine examples can be seen in museums and sale rooms; yet for the most part the literature of the subject has been confined to brief sections in general works on Far Eastern ceramics. The author of Chinese Export Ceramics is a leading Dutch authority on the wares, so much of which was brought to Europe by the Dutch East India Company during the seventeenth centuries. With the aid of the Company's records, old catalogues, estate inventories and paintings showing porcelain, Dr. Scheurleer has built up an absorbing picture of the porcelain trade between China and the West, and of the methods used in ordering, manufacturing and shipping in detail. from the early blue-and-white and first garniture sets to the massive armorial services and plates decorated with European Scenes. There are also chapters on grisaille decoration, porcelain figures, and wares decorated in Europe. The extensive and well-produced illustrations cover almost every recorded type of Chinese export porcelain, and will make it possible for the collector to identify and date these fascinating wares. TREGEAR, MARY
Song Ceramics
Thames & Hudson, Ltd, London. 1982, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0500233462). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 29 x 32.8 cm; 2,564 kg; 262 pages. Includes 317 illustrations, 42 in colour, and 35 maps and line drawings.; Used book with signs of wear namely on the dust jacket that has small tears and scuffs. Interior in very good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The three centuries spanned by the Song (Sung) dynasty, 960-1278, saw a brilliant flowering of the art of the potter in China. Two major factors behind this development were aesthetic appreciation of fine design and workmanship shown by the Song court and the rise of China as a maritime power in the eleventh century, providing the opportunity for the expansion of foreign trade. Thanks to the widespread demand for high-quality wares, output was greatly increased in this period. Today surviving specimens are still greatly appreciated by collectors and connoisseurs for their outstanding elegance and sophistication, as well as being a source of inspirations for leading studio-potters. In this important study the author describes in detail the historical background and development of Song-dynasty ceramic styles, executed largely in stoneware. There are illustrations of numerous outstanding pieces from collections throughout the world. Characteristic examples have been chosen to represent the wide variety of forms and styles of decoration, whether painted, incised or impressed, produced at leading kiln sites in both north and South China, as well as Korean celadon and other wares inspired by Chinese originals. Although many kilns had existed for a century or more before the beginning of the Song dynasty, specialization was a new phenomenon and wares began to be specifically named for the first time, e.g. Ding ware, Yaozhou ware, Ru ware - names which have remained in use ever since. Characteristic shapes identified with certain kilns are shown in the line drawings, and all the forms potted - from meiping vases to cup-stands and incense burners - are discussed in the context of the individual wares. Glazes, generally thick and sometimes featuring internal bubbles or enhanced by crackle, are at this period still generally restrained in color but often enliven the otherwise sombre character of the major wares, and the distinctive characteristics of the various styles are clearly seen in the individual illustrations. With this detailed maps of kiln sites, glossary of technical terms, bibliography, chronological table and detailed notes on the illustrations, this book is an essential guide to all aspects of the enormous ceramic output of those anonymous Song potters whose work is still held in such high reward seven centuries later. Assessing the roles pottery has played in each dynasty throughout the history of China, the author also discusses its enormous impact on the ceramic industries of the rest of the world, where Chinese porcelain has been admired and collected for centuries. From the earliest earthenwares to the exotic burial figures of the Tang, from the classic forms and subtle glazes of the Song to the famous porcelains created especially for export or imperial tastes, the book draws upon the extensive collections of the British Museum for lavish illustrations. The author considers the purposes for which the ceramics of each period were made, how their production was organised, and what effect local conditions might have had on their final forms. Incorporating contemporary commentaries, recent archeological evidence from kiln sites and the most up-to-date scientific analysis, the book provides a valuable new account of China's ceramic history.
