Both volumes include a sticker with the author name on spine, which is slightly ungluing on volume 1.; Abstract of thesis entitled: "The Imperial Porcelain Wares of the Late Qing Dynasty" submitted by Simon S. M. Kwan for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong, July, 1989. This thesis is devoted to the study of Qing ceramics from the reign of Daoguang (1821.1850) to the reign of Xuantong (1909-1911), covering a period of approximately ninety years. During this period, the ceramic art of China was dominated by the work of the Imperial Porcelain Factory. This Factory was responsible for the production of practically all the ceramic wares required by the imperial court. The Imperial Porcelain Factory of the late Qing period, or the "Imperial Kilns" as it was commonly called, was located in Jingdezhen, near Zhushan. Two versions of the annual production catalogues of the Factory are available today. One belongs to the reign of Tongzhi (1862-1874) and the other one belongs to the reign of Guangxu (1875-1908). Items mentioned in these two catalogues have been almost completely identified and are illustrated in this thesis. Ceramic wares produced by the Imperial Factory, that is, the imperial wares, may be classified into these main categories, ritual vessels, domestic wares and special items. Designs for all these wares were prepared at the imperial palace under the direct control of the Emperor and the Department of Works. Drawings and wooden models were made in Beijing and sent to Jingdezhen from time to time. Sample pieces were made by the Factory and returned to the palace for approval and ordering. The Imperial Porcelain Factory of the late Qing period was a fully equipped establishment of producing ceramic wares from the raw clay stage to the fully decorated city bodies ready for firing. However, the actual work of the firing on a consignment basis. Firing kilns for these wares were the egg-shaped kilns of Jingdezhen and the firing material was the wood of pine trees. Decoration and design of the Imperial wares of late Qing were substantially based on the designs of the Ming and early Qing period. However, there were other innovative designs and decorative techniques developed during this period. Finally, almost every one of the imperial wares of this period carries an imperial mark. As these marks are identifiable as being written by a very limited number of mark-writers at the Factory, they serve as an important guide for the authentication of the Imperial porcelain wares of the late Qing dynasty. The extraordinary innovations of Chinese potters court among the most outstanding accomplishments in the cultural heritage of the world since the Neolithic era. Systematic study of Chinese ceramics, begun in the eighteenth century with the French Jesuit Pere d'Entrecolles, has been greatly enlarged in the twentieth century, and since the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, extensive excavations at kiln sites have yielded invaluable new insights into the chronological development of ceramic forms, glaze types and decorative styles. This remarkable book cites all the latest scientific and archaeological evidence, examining provenance, technique, archaeological and historical context, and ancient traditions of Chinese connoisseurship and patronage to provide an integrated and highly detailed approach to the subject. MACINTOSH, DUNCAN
Chinese Blue and White Porcelain
Book Marketing Ltd, Hong Kong. 1988, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 9622110460). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22.5 x 29 cm; 1.17 Kg; 181 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket and interior. Previous owner sticker glued to the front free endpaper. The dust jacket is protected with a tight clearcover.; Blue and White porcelain has been in the mainstream of Chinese ceramic production since the beginning of the fifteenth century, but, nevertheless, has at times had a somewhat chequered history. When it first appeared in the fourteenth century Chinese connoisseurs ahd regarded it as vulgar and garish, and a hundred years later, after receiving immense Imperial patronage during the Xuande reign, was the victim of an austere puritanical reaction. Since the Chenghua reign later in the fifteenth century, however, "blue and white" has gone from strengh, and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had an immense effect on porcelain production in the West. In this new history, the author traces the history of "blue and white" from its uncertain beginnings to the end of the Qing Dynasty. Considerable attention is also paid throughout to social and political events so that the reader can see something of the purely "human" conditions that were contemporary with the production of the porcelain. "This book will be of value not only to the expert, but also to the beginner who will find, in a handy form, much of value when evaluating the authenticity, provenance and dating of Chinese 'blue and white'." - from the Oriental Art review of the First Edition. MANGINIS, GEORGE
China Rediscovered: The Benaki Museum Collection
Haus Publishing Limited, United Kingdom. 2016, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781910376584). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 24.3 x 24.5 cm; 0.791 Kg; 144 pages with 160 colour illustrations.; STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC: This book examines the 'new orientation of ideas' on Chinese material culture in early 20th century London under the influence of a circle of enthusiasts and scholars, preeminent among which was George Eumorfopoulos (1863-1939), a Greek origin London businessman and collector. These ideas are placed within the context of earlier encounters between China and the West through trade and diplomacy as they unravelled between the 16th century and the late 19th century. The objects discussed form part of the Benaki Museum collection of Chinese art, in its majority donated by Eumorfopoulos between 1929 and 1936; this collection is a rare 'time capsule' of the taste and preoccupations of the pre-World War II period with regards to China. The years between the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911 and the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949 marked an 'opening up' of China to the rest of the world and coincided with the first archaeological excavations of the country's early cultures. Situated in London, a centre of imperialist power and global finance, George Eumorfopoulos and his entourage were instrumental in acquiring, assessing, interpreting and manipulating the previously-unseen objects. Eumorfopoulos also acted as an intermediary between the contemporary art scene (the tenets of which informed his taste in the first place) and these ancient artifacts, giving rise to the 'studio pottery' movement in England and beyond. The years of isolation which followed allowed aspects of this 'vision' to become canonical and influence scholarly production on Chinese material culture. Research over the last 25 years has allowed a reassessment of this vision. This ground-breaking publication perceives approximately 100 artifacts as 'actors' within constantly evolving 'sets of action' as players in a game of power, knowledge and taste. This is a book about China and the West in the 20th century and the roles antiquity and its material manifestations acted in the re-negotiation of this cultural interplay.; George Manginis has taught History of Islamic and Byzantine Art and History of Chinese Ceramics for SOAS/University of Londo, the New College of the Humanities, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum, the Benaki Museum in Athens, the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. He is currently Teaching Fellow at The University of Edinburgh. He is the author of Mount Sinai: a History of Pilgrims and Travellers (Armchair Traveller, 2016). New/No Jacket.

MEDLEY, MARGARET
T'Ang Pottery and Porcelain (the Faber Monographs on Pottery & Porcelain)
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1981, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0571109578). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 16.3 x 25.5 cm; 0.575 Kg; 151 pages with 143 black and white illustrations and 18 colour illustrations; Used book with signs wear. The dust jacket is faded on spine and is now protected with a clearcover. The interior is in very good condition.; During the rich and colourful T'ang dynasty, which lasted from 618 to 906, Chinese civilization reached one of its high peaks, some would say its highest peak of all. Territorial expansion and international trade led to an unprecedented influx of foreign merchants and diplomats, of new ideas and fashions. There was a fresh and open delight in the arts, in painting, poetry, music, and not least in ceramics. Scarcely ever before had the world seen such virtuosity, variety and sheer joie de vivre in their production. It is remarkable that Margaret Medley's T'ang Pottery and Porcelain is the first major book to have been solely devoted to the subject. It will be of the greatest value to anyone with an interest in Chinese history and ceramics. The most significant developments in T'ang times were the gradual supersession of earthenware by stoneware and the successful creation of pure white wares, together with the manufacture of fine porcelain towards the end of the dynasty. The white wares immediately became popular from Indonesia to Egypt. The lead-glazed wares with their vivid polychrome decoration and the lively realism of the tomb figures of men, women and animals, especially horses, were also widely popular, the figures being important documents of social history. In spite of the fact that kilns became associated for the first time with particular wares in the T'ang period, the chronology of T'ang ceramics is full of problems and pitfalls. These have been faced squarely and tackled systematically by the author. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

The Chinese Potter: A Practical History of Chinese Ceramics
Phaidon Press Limited, O. 1980, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 0714821241). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 17.5 x 24.4 cm; 0.732 Kg; 288 pages with 223 illustrations, including 8 in colour.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The interior has some pencil writing and underlying on a few pages. Good readable copy.; Most books about Chinese ceramics concentrate on a particular style or period. But in this authoritative and beautifully illustrated volume the author looks at the whole history of Chinese pottery from the point of view of the techniques used by potters and so traces how their craft evolved from the earliest unglazed earthenware pots to highly sophisticated porcelains. She describes the glazes, kilns, clays and working methods of the Chinese potters and makes it clear how certain types of wares could only be produced as the result of particular technological developments. Much of this material is new and the author has made full use of all the recent archaeological reports that have emerged from China. Her clear technical descriptions are easy to follow and anyone with a practical interest in making pots will learn much from them. The specialist will gain a far better understanding of the history of his subject and the superb illustrations will please all who admire Chinese ceramics. Reign marks, maps, diagrams of kilns, a chronological table, a useful glossary and a bibliographical are also included. Good/No Jacket.

The Emperor's Lost Treasure: Remnants of Unrecorded Chenghua Porcelain
Times Editions, Singapore. 2003. (ISBN: 9812049134). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover cloth (with dust jacket); 25 x 28 cm; 1.5 Kg; 224 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Minor signs of wear on the dust jacket, which is now protected with a clearcover. Interior in very good condition apart a tiny part of two pages in the end that show signs of have been slightly glued to each other.; Chenghua porcelain is among the most valuable and highly prized of imperial wares from the Ming period. It is also the rarest of Ming porcelain because so few of what must once have been a stupendous collection of wares made for Emperor Chenghua are known to have survived following Chenghua's death in 1487. Despite five centuries of clandestine treasure hunting by grave robbers and secretive collectors, no palpable cache of Chengua porcelain appears to have come to light. In writing this book, the author does not claim to have found the answer to the mistery of Emperor Chenghua's lost treasure. However, he is, in his opinion, privy to a private collection of same exceptional pieces of Chenghua porcelain. These pieces were embargoed from publication for about 30 years because many are radically different from authenticated examples of Chenghua wares in extant collections. For the first time, a selection from this collection is published here, together with a scholarly essay which, while acknowledging indebtedness to established authorities when traversing familiar ground, does not balk at expressing contrary opinions whenever justified. The result is an unprecedented work on Chenghua porcelain. Whether a Chengua expert or layperson, the reader will find Section II a feast for the eye while studying the various photographs and mulling over the delicacy of the potting and design, the quiet splendour of the luminous colours or the lustrous gleam of the ivory-toned or the smoky green glaze of the illustrated Chenghua porcelain. Could these pieces possibly constitute some of the fabled lost treasures of Emperor Chenghua? The author leaves it to the reader to decide. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Collector's Guide
Times Editions.Marshall Cavendish, Singapore. 2004. (ISBN: 9812327584). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21.2 x 29 cm; 0.808 Kg; 144 pages with colour illustrations.; Used books with minor signs of wear on the dust jacket and interior. Looks as new. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The term 'Straits Chinese porcelain' refers specifically to a little known category of nineteenth century, polychrome enamelled export porcelain, which was exclusively made for the unique community of Straits-born Chinese whose ancestors first settled down in Malacca at the beginning of the fourteenth century. Most extant pieces may, however be dated between the reign of Tao Kuan (1821-50) and the beginning of the Min Kuo era (1920), or thereabouts. 'Straits Chinese porcelain' differs from the traditional types of wares made in China, not only in the shapes of the potting but also in the style of the decorative designs. Where mandarin types of utensils tended to be sparsely ornamented and lightly painted in pale washes of enamels, nonya ware is characterised by its baroque exuberance of decorative motifs and the most vivid and colourful famille rose enamels. Despite its distinctively ornate appearance, "Straits Chinese porcelain" is decorated with but one recurrent theme, namely, the phoenix-and-tree peony design. Equally remarkable is the fact that shapes are starkly simple and functional. There are no eccentric-looking pots encumbered with superfluous ormolu works or, for that matter, ceramic curiosities simulating human and animal forms and other unusual objects. This book is notable for the new light it sheds on several other hitherto unsuspected varieties of Straits Chinese porcelain, namely, several kinds of blue and white porcelain utensils, a small group of enameled Yi-hsing wares, mainly small teapots, and some types of nineteenth century Japanese porcelain painted in crowded motifs and strong colours. A long first chapter on ceramics, by a specialist in the field, leads the reader gently through the maze of styles and reigns. The rest of the book, by Judith Moorhouse, covers the superb bronzes, jade carvings, enamels, lacquer and small ivory and wood carvings, including Japanese netsuke. There is a map, a date chart and a long illustrated appendix of condensed information on such things as reign marks, decorative motifs, bronze and jade shapes, and the complex of Buddhist iconography.
