PINTO DE MATOS, MARIA ANTONIA
Chinese Export Porcelain from the Museum of Anastácio Gonçalves, Lisbon
Philip Wilson Publishers Limited, London/Instituto Português de Museus, Lisbon. 1996, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9728137451). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 23.7 x 28.2 cm; 1.47 Kg; 287 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; New book. May show signs of shelf wear.; The Museum of Anastácio Gonçalves is acknowledged as containing one of the world's most important collections of Chinese porcelain. In particular, it houses an extremely fine collection of Kraak porcelain, considered by experts internationally to be a leading source of reference. The collection is the product of a life-long passion of one man, Dr António Anastácio Gonçalves, and is housed in his former Lisbon residence, a magnificent Beaux Arts town house on one of the city's 'New Avenues'. Published in collaboration with the new Instituto Português de Museus to celebrate the re-opening of the Museum Collection following and extensive programme of renovation, this book opens with three essays which study the development of the Portuguese trade in porcelain between China and Europe, the development of the art of porcelain design and decoration in China and the formation of the collection of Dr Gonçalves. This is followed by the main catalogue of over 160 items from the collection, each illustrated in colour and accompanied by an extended entry giving technical information and placing the item in the wider context of the development of the technique, iconography and aesthetics of Chinese porcelain over six centuries. In addition to the Kraak porcelain, there are examples of early 12th century Cizhou wares, an extensive collection of blue and white pieces from the 16th and 17th century Zhengde, Jiajing and Wanli periods as well as Famille Verte and Famille Rose examples of teawares and armorial vases from several other important groups. MEDLEY, MARGARET
T'Ang Pottery and Porcelain (the Faber Monographs on Pottery & Porcelain)
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1981, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0571109578). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 16.3 x 25.5 cm; 0.575 Kg; 151 pages with 143 black and white illustrations and 18 colour illustrations; Used book with signs wear. The dust jacket is faded on spine and is now protected with a clearcover. The interior is in very good condition.; During the rich and colourful T'ang dynasty, which lasted from 618 to 906, Chinese civilization reached one of its high peaks, some would say its highest peak of all. Territorial expansion and international trade led to an unprecedented influx of foreign merchants and diplomats, of new ideas and fashions. There was a fresh and open delight in the arts, in painting, poetry, music, and not least in ceramics. Scarcely ever before had the world seen such virtuosity, variety and sheer joie de vivre in their production. It is remarkable that Margaret Medley's T'ang Pottery and Porcelain is the first major book to have been solely devoted to the subject. It will be of the greatest value to anyone with an interest in Chinese history and ceramics. The most significant developments in T'ang times were the gradual supersession of earthenware by stoneware and the successful creation of pure white wares, together with the manufacture of fine porcelain towards the end of the dynasty. The white wares immediately became popular from Indonesia to Egypt. The lead-glazed wares with their vivid polychrome decoration and the lively realism of the tomb figures of men, women and animals, especially horses, were also widely popular, the figures being important documents of social history. In spite of the fact that kilns became associated for the first time with particular wares in the T'ang period, the chronology of T'ang ceramics is full of problems and pitfalls. These have been faced squarely and tackled systematically by the author. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

MEDLEY, MARGARET
The Chinese Potter: A Practical History of Chinese Ceramics
Phaidon Press Limited, O. 1980, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 0714821241). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 17.5 x 24.4 cm; 0.732 Kg; 288 pages with 223 illustrations, including 8 in colour.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The interior has some pencil writing and underlying on a few pages. Good readable copy.; Most books about Chinese ceramics concentrate on a particular style or period. But in this authoritative and beautifully illustrated volume the author looks at the whole history of Chinese pottery from the point of view of the techniques used by potters and so traces how their craft evolved from the earliest unglazed earthenware pots to highly sophisticated porcelains. She describes the glazes, kilns, clays and working methods of the Chinese potters and makes it clear how certain types of wares could only be produced as the result of particular technological developments. Much of this material is new and the author has made full use of all the recent archaeological reports that have emerged from China. Her clear technical descriptions are easy to follow and anyone with a practical interest in making pots will learn much from them. The specialist will gain a far better understanding of the history of his subject and the superb illustrations will please all who admire Chinese ceramics. Reign marks, maps, diagrams of kilns, a chronological table, a useful glossary and a bibliographical are also included. Good/No Jacket.

The Emperor's Lost Treasure: Remnants of Unrecorded Chenghua Porcelain
Times Editions, Singapore. 2003. (ISBN: 9812049134). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover cloth (with dust jacket); 25 x 28 cm; 1.5 Kg; 224 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Minor signs of wear on the dust jacket, which is now protected with a clearcover. Interior in very good condition apart a tiny part of two pages in the end that show signs of have been slightly glued to each other.; Chenghua porcelain is among the most valuable and highly prized of imperial wares from the Ming period. It is also the rarest of Ming porcelain because so few of what must once have been a stupendous collection of wares made for Emperor Chenghua are known to have survived following Chenghua's death in 1487. Despite five centuries of clandestine treasure hunting by grave robbers and secretive collectors, no palpable cache of Chengua porcelain appears to have come to light. In writing this book, the author does not claim to have found the answer to the mistery of Emperor Chenghua's lost treasure. However, he is, in his opinion, privy to a private collection of same exceptional pieces of Chenghua porcelain. These pieces were embargoed from publication for about 30 years because many are radically different from authenticated examples of Chenghua wares in extant collections. For the first time, a selection from this collection is published here, together with a scholarly essay which, while acknowledging indebtedness to established authorities when traversing familiar ground, does not balk at expressing contrary opinions whenever justified. The result is an unprecedented work on Chenghua porcelain. Whether a Chengua expert or layperson, the reader will find Section II a feast for the eye while studying the various photographs and mulling over the delicacy of the potting and design, the quiet splendour of the luminous colours or the lustrous gleam of the ivory-toned or the smoky green glaze of the illustrated Chenghua porcelain. Could these pieces possibly constitute some of the fabled lost treasures of Emperor Chenghua? The author leaves it to the reader to decide. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Collector's Guide
Times Editions.Marshall Cavendish, Singapore. 2004. (ISBN: 9812327584). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21.2 x 29 cm; 0.808 Kg; 144 pages with colour illustrations.; Used books with minor signs of wear on the dust jacket and interior. Looks as new. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The term 'Straits Chinese porcelain' refers specifically to a little known category of nineteenth century, polychrome enamelled export porcelain, which was exclusively made for the unique community of Straits-born Chinese whose ancestors first settled down in Malacca at the beginning of the fourteenth century. Most extant pieces may, however be dated between the reign of Tao Kuan (1821-50) and the beginning of the Min Kuo era (1920), or thereabouts. 'Straits Chinese porcelain' differs from the traditional types of wares made in China, not only in the shapes of the potting but also in the style of the decorative designs. Where mandarin types of utensils tended to be sparsely ornamented and lightly painted in pale washes of enamels, nonya ware is characterised by its baroque exuberance of decorative motifs and the most vivid and colourful famille rose enamels. Despite its distinctively ornate appearance, "Straits Chinese porcelain" is decorated with but one recurrent theme, namely, the phoenix-and-tree peony design. Equally remarkable is the fact that shapes are starkly simple and functional. There are no eccentric-looking pots encumbered with superfluous ormolu works or, for that matter, ceramic curiosities simulating human and animal forms and other unusual objects. This book is notable for the new light it sheds on several other hitherto unsuspected varieties of Straits Chinese porcelain, namely, several kinds of blue and white porcelain utensils, a small group of enameled Yi-hsing wares, mainly small teapots, and some types of nineteenth century Japanese porcelain painted in crowded motifs and strong colours. MOORHOUSE, JUDITH; INCLUDING A CHAPTER ON CERAMICS BY BLITZ, DRIES
Collecting Oriental Antiques
The Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited, Middlesex, England. 1976, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0600367207). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 22.1 x 29.5 cm; 0.797 Kg; 128 pages with black and white and colour illustrations; Used book with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is price clipped and shows some yellowing on the rear, which is only seen if the dust jacket is removed.; Oriental works of art, once the exclusive preserve of the elderly and, above all, the rich, are now being actively collected by young people of limited means. Of course, the very finest items will always command millionaire prices, but it is increasingly realized that there is a mass of lesser prices widely available for very modest sums. Collecting Oriental Antiques is a guide, specially written for ordinary people, to what is easily obtainable, where to get advice and how to begin a collection, with advice on dealers, auction houses, reproductions, fakes and much else that often puzzles or alarms the beginner. The book deals with the six main areas of interest to collectors. A long first chapter on ceramics, by a specialist in the field, leads the reader gently through the maze of styles and reigns. The rest of the book, by Judith Moorhouse, covers the superb bronzes, jade carvings, enamels, lacquer and small ivory and wood carvings, including Japanese netsuke. There is a map, a date chart and a long illustrated appendix of condensed information on such things as reign marks, decorative motifs, bronze and jade shapes, and the complex of Buddhist iconography. After receiving a degree in Chinese from London University and spending a year studying in Taiwan, Judith Moorhouse joined the staff of Bluett & Sons, the leading London dealers in Oriental works of art. HERVOUET, FRANCOIS; HERVOUET, NICOLE; AND BRUNEAU, YVES
La Porcelaine Des Compagnie Des Indes a Décor Occidental
Flammarion, Paris. 1986, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 2080109901). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, French text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25 x 33.9 cm; 2.76 Kg; 432 pages with 1206 illustrations, 100 in colour.; Minor signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover of the dust jacket.; This reference book almost functions as an encyclopaedia, identifying and providing possible dates to a very large range of western scenes painted on Chinese porcelain, commissioned through the East India Companies and that arrived in Europe, and later in the United States, during the 18th century. The idea of asking craftsmen of the Middle Kingdom to paint porcelain according to their own taste emerged very early in the minds of those Europeans who travelled to the Far East. For example, to paint a boat on which they had been sailing for six months on a bowl, or to reproduce an engraving, the portrait of a loved one, among others. In short, Westerners asked for anything that, for one reason or another (and the diversity of orders is incredible), was important to perpetuate through time in an original way. As they returned to their homelands, bringing with them these beautiful objects that had been specially ordered to Chinese artists and that were very much cherished, these began to be used or functioned as memory tokens. Although several books have been written about Chinese export porcelain, particularly since the Second World War, it should be noted that no book had aimed at functioning as an 'inventory' of western decoration on Chinese porcelain destined to the western market. This book intends to serve as a catalogue of all the decorations ordered to be painted on porcelain by the East India Companies of all of the countries. With a short margin of error, we estimate that there should be no more than 1.300 different representations around the world and this book assembles about nine-tenths. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Chinese Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries
Uitgeversmaatschappij De Tijdstroom b.v. Lochem, The Netherlands. 1977, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9060876407). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 17 x 25 cm; 0.542 Kg; 198 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations.; The dust jacket has minor chips, tears and scuffs. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. The interior is in very good condition.; Between the reign of Chia-Ch'ing and the Japanese invasion in 1937 much porcelain was made in China, albeit of very diverse quality. It is, in fact, a strange phenomenon that, up to now, most experts have neglected this span of approximately 150 years during which so many interesting pieces were made. In this book the author makes an attempt, for the first time, to bring order into the porcelains of the various periods concerned and to show their interrelationships as well as their relationships to earlier periods. Some of the porcelain is undoubtedly rather poor, but many pieces, especially those produced during the second and third decades of this century, are of superior quality. Highly interesting developments are recorded in the production of porcelain at this time, which reaches an astonishing peak of excellence during the Hung-hsien reign-period in 1916. Even during the years of upheaval after this year porcelain of great interest continued to me made. The most important aspects of this book are the many illustrations, the abundance of hitherto unpublished marks - which will allow collectors to determine many pieces - and the exhaustive index. OORT, H.A. VAN
The Porcelain of Hung-Hsien: A Study of the Socio-Cultural Background and Some Characteristics of the Porcelain Produced at Chingtechen During the Imperial Reign of Yüan Shih-K'Ai (1916)
N.V. Uitgeversmaatschappij De Tijdstroom Lochem. 1970, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 16.5 x 24.5 cm.; 0.831 Kg.; 301 pages with black and white and one colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that has a tear on the back cover. Signs of wear on the interior. Overall in good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The object of this book is to broaden the range of aesthetic enjoyment in the field of Chinese porcelain. First of all the writer has dealt once and for all with the myth that after Ch'ien-lung almost no porcelain worthy of our attention was produced any more. Secondly, it was shown that the revival in the porcelain industry at the end of the Ch'ing dynasty obtained a heavy stimulus from Yuan Shik-k'ai, the first President of the Republic of China. This culminated in the production of very fine porcelain bearing the reign mark HUNG-HSIEN of his usurped emperorship in 1916. Finally we see that after the death of Yuan Shik-k'ai the porcelain production did not suddenly come to a standstill but instead continued to turn out ware that can rival some of the best pieces of the past. In order to corroborate this point of view, the revival of porcelain art is discussed against the background of social and cultural change. In particular attention is drawn to the importance these high technical achievements have for the production of porcelain marked with better known reign marks of previous periods. The thesis set forth in the book is elucidated by illustrations covering each period from the middle of last century right up to the People's Republic. Good.

RINALDI, MAURA
Kraak Porcelain: A Moment in the History of Trade
Bamboo Publishing Ltd, London. 1989, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 1870076095). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25 x 31.5 cm, 1.860 Kg; 256 pages with 298 colour and black and white plates, maps and drawings, bibliography and index. Foreword by Dr. Christian J.A. Jorg, Groninger Museum.; Used book in good condition with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; When two captured portuguese merchantmen were brought to The Netherlands in the early seventeenth century, their cargoes of Chinese porcelain were enthusiastically received by the Dutch. These plates, dishes and bowls, decorated in blue and white ground, were named 'Kraak Porcelain', a name which has long since been associated with a particular type of Chinese export porcelain, not only by the Dutch but also by other countries. Despite the enduring and widespread appeal of Oriental ceramics in The Netherlands and elsewhere, no scholar has yet concentrated exclusively on the topic of Kraak porcelain, with the result that this book represents the first comprehensive monograph available on the subject. Maura Rinaldi's exhaustive study of Kraak porcelain, the culmination of more than five years of research and a world-wide search for pieces, goes much further than most monographs on ceramics by including all relevant material to the study of Kraak porcelain. The four sections of the book, dealing with the historical background, development of the ceramic industry and trade, the numerous categories and classifications of Kraak and its imitations, are all extensively illustrated. Kraak Porcelain will prove to be an invaluable reference book for collectors, scholars, and students, as well as general readers with a keen interest in Oriental ceramics. Good/Dust Jacket Included.
