ADDIS, J.M.
Chinese Ceramics from Datable Tombs and Some Other Dated Material: A Handbook
Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Limited, London. 1978, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0856670391). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 189 pages with various black and white illustrations; 21.3 x 28 cm; 1.402 Kg; Used book with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that shows edgeworn. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. The interior is in good condition, except for a sticker glued on the rear of the front cover, signs of a removed stick on the top right corner of the front free endpaper and one page that has a small tear towards the outside text block.; The study of Chinese ceramics has, until now, been severely hampered by lack of archaeological evidence, particularly with regard to dating. There are good representative collections in Western museums, but very few items can be given a precise, or even an approximate, date on firm evidence. Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, random looting of tombs, the source of most early ceramics in Western collections, had been stopped, and the Chinese authorities have carried out many important controlled excavations. A small proportion of the early objects was revealed in “The Genious of China”, an exhibition shown in London and Paris in 1973-74, and carefully prepared articles on the archaeological and art-historical work have been published in Chinese periodicals. However, much of the important evidence still awaits publication. The author of this book had exceptional opportunities to visit provincial museums and art-historical research institutes in China in the years 1972 to 1975. He took notes and photographs of exhibits to which a precise, or reasonably close, date can be given on good evidence. This important material is published here for the first time in the West. The book is arranged in chronological order with the author’s comments beneats each object. Additional material includes a map of China showing major tomb sites and a chronological index. This scholarly work presents an exciting and vital contribution towards establishing the chronology of Chinese ceramics. Good/Fair.

ALLEN, ANTHONY JOHN
Allen's Introduction to Later Chinese Porcelain
Allen's Enterprises Ltd, New Zealand. 1996, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0473038366). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22 x 31 cm; 1,3 Kg; 222 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear. Front cover slightly faded on top.; Chinese porcelain of the period 1820 through 1920, to date has been the province of a minority of academic authors and a few adventurous dealers and collectors. This misunderstood but fascinating field of study is now brought within the reach of the average collector. Written with interests of novice collectors and dealers in mind, superbly illustrated in colour throughout, each of the introductory chapters conclude with suggestions for further reading, thus providing a fast but solid grounding for the primary focus of the book: dating of later Chinese porcelains. This book discusses marks, reign marks, footrims, glazes, bubbles, flaws and imperfections and other indications of a date of manufacture, including the contentious subjects of "hollow line" and the "reversed S"; illustrating in close-up many of the features used by the author to substantiate his assertions. Unashamedly provocative, Allen concludes with chapters on those subjects which most earlier writers have previously treated as "taboo", including "Modern Fakes and Their Detection", "Buying Tips in Asia" and "Recommendations for Investments". Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

ALLEN, ANTHONY JOHN
Allen's Authentication of Later Chinese Porcelain (1796ad - 1999ad)
Allen's Enterprises Ltd, New Zealand. 2000, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0473065827). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22 x 31 cm; 1,5 Kg; 264 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear. Interior as new.; Allen's Authentication of Later Chinese Porcelain continues on from the earlier Allen's Introduction to Later Chinese Porcelain, in a more detailed examination of aspects of dating; providing even the novice collector or dealer with information, dating techniques and illustrations, which would otherwise take yours to learn. The focus of the work is primarily on the dating of porcelain made between the beginning of the Jiaqing reign in 1796AD, and ending in the penultimate year of the 20th century, 1999. As many of the porcelains made in this 200 year period were copies of earlier periods, there are also a number of illustrations of genuine porcelain and pottery pieces made in the late Ming and earlier Qing dynasties, i.e. prior to 1796AD. Progressing chronologically through the late Qing dynasty reigns of Jianqing through Xuantong, this book examines porcelain of the Republic period (1912 to 1949), and then the Mao and post-Mao period of the People's Republic of China; before concluding with a preliminary look at the dating of Chinese redwares, and details of the author's visit to Jingdezhen in 1998. With over 480 full colour illustrations, not only of the items but their backs and undersides, close-ups of marks, footrims and glazes, this book was the most detailed English language text to on the dating of Chinese porcelain of this period at the time it was published. The author's often blunt and provocative commentary will undoubtedly offend some quarters of the Asian art world. But collectors for generations to come will thank him for his advice on detecting the bane of every collector«s life - the Chinese porcelain fake made intentionally to deceive. AYERS, JOHN
The Baur Collection, Geneva, Chinese Ceramics Volume Three: Monochrome-Glazed Porcelains of the Ch'Ing Dynasty
Collections Baur-Genève, Switzerland. 1972, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English and French text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 24 x 29 cm; 2.3 Kg; 266 pages (introduction of 22 pages followed by an extensive catalogue with black and white and colour illustrations, each with caption).; OUT OF PRINT. LIMITED EDITION OF 1100 COPIES, 50 DELUXE COPIES IN LEATHER NUMBERED FROM I to L; 1000 STANDARD COPIES IN CLOTH NUMBERED FROM 1 to 1000 AND 50 COPIES RESERVED TO EMPLOYEES, OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 188.; Signs of wear in the dust jacket, with some yellowing on spine and some peeling of the laminated layer of the dust jacket on the top and bottom of the spine and also on the top of the front and back cover. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. The outside text block shows some yellowing. The interior is in very good condition, apart from an old bookseller sticker glued to the front free endpaper and a tiny mark on the bottom right of one page (bent in the past).; When the Baur Collection museum opened in 1964, few people were aware that this private museum housed one of the most important collections of Chinese ceramics in Europe.; "In these last two volumes of the catalogue therefore our scope will be found limited almost entirely to wares produced during the reigns of K'ang Hsi (1662-1722), Yung Chêng (1723-1735), and Ch'in Lung (1736-1795). But few periods have been more prolific in invention: and to all lovers of Chinese porcelain these are familiar and evocative names calling to mind a succession of styles of unusual brilliance.(.) The present volume is devoted exclusively to the porcelains with monochrome glazes. (.) Their representation in the Baur Collection is one of quite exceptional richness and strengh. Shown here (with relatively few lacunae) is the full gamut of tones and colours that the 18th century potters of the Ching-tê-chên were able to devise, while some of the rarest and most prized effects are present in generous measure. Outstanding among the latter are the "peachbloom" pinks, pale "clair-de-lune" blues and much favoured soft celadon greens, the development of which seems to belong especially to the period about 1715-1745. This part of the collection may therefore be said to offer much of unusual value both to the student, and to the casual visitor." excerpt from the introduction by John Ayers, Keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1972. BOULAY, ANTHONY DU
Chinese Porcelain
Octupus Books Limited, London. 1973. (ISBN: 0706400453). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 21.2 x 24.7 cm; 0.573 Kg; 95 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations; used book in good condition, with minor signs of wear in the dust jacket. The front cover cloth as some marks, which are only seen if the dust jacket is removed; The text is divided in four main chapters: The early wares; The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), The Ch'ing dynasty (1644-1912); and Chinese Export Porcelain.; The products of the Imperial and other kilns have created one of the gentlest and most beautiful of the arts. The technical inventiveness of Chinese potters - they had discovered methods of glazing pottery by the third century BC - made possible the manufacture of wonderfully delicate materials and colours. Their versatility as artists enabled them to design new shapes, and decorate them with incised or applied motifs which have been imitated throughout the world. Anthony du Boulay traces the development of Chinese porcelain from its beginning to the early 20th century. His scholarly survey of this wonderful artistic tradition is illustrated with 32 colour plates and 100 black and white illustrations. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

BUSHELL, S.W. (TEXT AND NOTES)
Oriental Ceramic Art: Illustrated by Examples from the Collection of W.T. Walters
Crown Publishers, Inc. New York. 1980. (ISBN: 051752581X). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 34.5 x 24 cm; 2,326 Kg; 429 pages with 116 plates in colour and over 400 reproductions in black and white.; The original edition of this work was published in ten volumes in 1896 by Appleton and Company.; EX-LIBRARY with stamp on the front and rear free endpapers, and on the outside text block. The dust jacket is protected with a permanent clearcover. Signs of wear on the dust jacket and the interior. Good readable copy.; This volume contains every word and every picture of Oriental Ceramic Art, which is listed in almost every encyclopaedia and in many museum handbooks as a basic source book in its field. While its major emphasis is on the ceramics of China, it also has sections on Japan and Korea. Published in 1896 in a limited edition of 500 copies it soon disappeared from the market as most of the ten volume, 43 x 56 cm sets were given to major institutions, heads of state, and friends of W.T. Walters, who paid for its publication and whose collection illustrated it. Because of the massive margins in the original set we needed only a very slight reduction in the text page areas, with many of the colour pages emerging in their original size. S.W. Bushell was an English doctor who spent many years as physician to the British legation in Peking. He made ceramics his avocation and absorbed and translated many of the Chinese works on this and allied subjects. He wrote two handbooks for the Victoria and Albert Museum and was coauthor of the catalog of the Morgan Ceramic collection. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Interior as new.; Catalogue from the exhibition Late Ming: Chinese Porcelain from the Butler Collections held at the Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art du Luxembourg from the 27 June until the 14 September 2008.; "Thanks to a generous loan from Sir Michael Butler and his family, the museum is in a position to display - for the first time ever - an exhibition of Chinese porcelain exclusively produced from non-imperial kilns of the late Ming period (1600-1644). It is Sir Michael Butler who conceived this event that gathers a hundred objects of which more than half have never been shown in public. In the reign of the late Emperors of the Ming dynasty , the Imperial workshops were gradually abandoned with the most talented potters and painters moving into the private sector. Unrecognized for a long time, this production can now be most fully appreciated thanks to the large collection amassed by Sir Michael Butler over a period of almost fifty years. In 2005 the Shanghai Museum, one of the biggest museums of Chinese porcelain in the world, displayed pieces from the Buttler collection together with its own collected works. This exhibition was also held in London at the Victoria and Albert Museum." excerpt from the introductory text by Jean-Luc Mousset, Curator of the Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art du Luxembourg. The Hollow Line in Dating Chinese Porcelains
Chinese Art Appraisers Association, San Francisco. 1978, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0930940032). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 19 x 26.5 cm; 0.7 Kg; 120 pages with black and white illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jackect. Interior in very good condition.; This publication is a study of late Ch'ing Dynasty porcelain. The hollow line is the author's discovery and terminology for an outstanding peculiarity of underglaze blue that is seen with increasing frequency during the late 19th and early 20th century. The question arises: If a good quality porcelain with a 17th century reign mark has hollow lines, how should the piece be dated? This volume is an introduction to a larger and more comprehensive comparision of prototypes and later products in the forthcoming book Dating Chinese Ceramics. This presentation is not a interpretation of porcelain characteristics but is a record of the observations through many years of Calvin Chou. Illustrated specimens come from museums and private collections in the Far East, United States and Europe. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

HOWARD, DAVID; AND AYERS, JOHN; FOREWORD BY ROCKEFELLER, NELSON A.
China for the West: Chinese Porcelain and Other Decorative Arts for Export Illustrated from the Mottahedeh Collection (Two Volumes)
Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Limited, London. 1978, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0856670359). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (two hardcover volumes in buckram bound with dust jackets in splicase. Gilted upper side of the text block on both volumes); 25.6 x 35 cm; 5.243 Kg; 704 pages with 103 colour plates and 100 monochrome illustrations; Used books wih signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that show wear marks on the front cover of volume 1 and edge wear on both volumes. Interior in very good condition. The slipcase has signs of wear, namely a few wear marks throughout. Very good condition overall.; This century has brought a growing awareness of the vast scale of Chinese export of decorative arts from the seventeenth century onwards. Until very recently however this subject had been very little studied, overshadowed as it was by the ever-widening perspectives of China's ancient past. It was nevertheless through this trade, and especially its ceramic wares, that the unique artistic creativity of the Chinese first became widely known and appreciated. This book aims to provide the most detailed and penetrating analysis yet made of the porcelains produced for Western markets during these centuries examining in its seven hundred pages and as many illustrations (one hundred of them in colour) all their many-sided attractions. The often unusual forms of the porcelain, their decorative styles and traditions, the endlessly varying subjects that they portray - and above all the continuous interchange in such themes between the Chinese manufacturers and decorators and their distant clients in the West, by means of the historic trading companies - all these are studied and interpreted more fully, and tabulated more practically for reference than ever before. The work also examines other export goods - painted enamels, carvings in ivory or soapstone, and reverse paintings on glass, to name only a few - which are represented by notable pieces. The material illustrated here is from one of the greatest collections of expert porcelain: assembled with care over nearly fifty years, it contains much that is rare or unique. Mr. and Ms. Motteheded have collected with clear-sighted purpose from the start, in a way no museum can hope to do so, so that today the wealth of rarities in their collection is matched only by its comprehensiveness, providing an ideal foundation for such a study. The authors are well equipped to write a major work on this subject, John Ayers, Keeper of the Far Eastern Section at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is a noted authority on Chinese and Japanese ceramics whose numerous writings include four volumes on the Baur Collection (Geneva, 1968-74). David Howard's book Chinese Armorial Porcelain (London, 1974) has given an entirely new emphasis in the study of export porcelain, its design and dating, as well as the social history behind the great East India Companies. With its superb illustrations and analytical, yet highly readable text, this book offers an indispensable new source of information for the student and the collector. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
