Good condition overall.; One of the most intriguing of South-East Asian vessels is the kendi, a pot with two openings and no handle. The story of the kendi is closely interwoven with the history of South-East Asia, kendi of pottery and porcelain having been recovered in sites dispersed over a vast area of Island South-East Asia. While comparison of existing vessels indicates some were of native manufacture, being fashioned of porous clay, the majority are non-porous glazed kendi of foreign origin. They formed part of the extensive trade in ceramics that flowed into the region from China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam and which were specially manufactured for export for both household and ceremonial purposes. The kendi in the Muzium Seni Asia, University of Malaya, form the world's largest public collection of kendi. Collectively spanning a period of over 1,000 years, and representing a number of Asian countries, they reflect differences in potting techniques, material, and decoration and show how an ancient form has survived to the present. They thus provide important clues to the patterns of trade and culture as well as the practices and customs that prevailed in the region at different periods. Good/No Jacket.

Western merchants have always been attracted to the products of China and to the profits of trade with the Orient. Exotic luxuries such as silks, porcelains, paintings, and fans were eagerly purchased, but tea, above all other commodities, made trade with China imperative. After the late 1750s, all foreign trade activity was confined to a 12-acre section of the city of Canton (Guangzhou). By the time Americans began trading directly with the Chinese, elaborate rules for commerce had developed. The largely self-sufficient Chinese allowed a limited amount of foreign trade, but closely controlled those transactions and the people involved. Chinese Export Art at Historic Deerfield explores the decorative arts and the nature of commerce between the West and China. The catalogue includes three essays: "Of Merchants and Mandarins: An Overview of the China Trade," "The Connecticut River Valley and the China Trade," and "Collecting Chinese Export Art at Historic Deerfield." New information on the involvement of rural New England in the China trade dispels the myth that trade with China was exclusively a coastal phenomenon. The stories of Connecticut River Valley merchants, sailors, captains, and wives involved in ventures to China are explored through advertisements, diaries, letters, and actual objects brought home. The catalogue also features 114 object entries in the categories of graphic arts, silks, metalwares, novelties, and porcelains. Although considered exotic to Western eyes, many of these Chinese products were specifically designed to appeal to foreign tastes. Objects range from porcelain punch bowls to gilded lacquerware boxes. One of the rarest objects presented is an album of 24 hand-painted images of the tea production process, from harvesting the leaves to packing them in boxes. The Yixing potters have always specialised in the making of teapots, whose use became widespread during the Ming period as a result of the innovation of making tea from rolled leaves, rather than using it in the fine-ground, powdered form in which it had previously been supplied. From the early sixteenth century onwards until the present day these potters have continually explored a wide diversity of shapes and styles - chiefly the geometric, segmented or naturalistic. Demand for their wares came not only from elsewhere in the East but also from European countries, which imported them and where they were imitated by such potters as Ary de Milde in Holland, The Elers brothers in England and the Meissen master Bottger. In The Stonewares of Yixing, Dr. K.S. Lo has produced a much-needed comprehensive, fully illustrated study of the subject. He describes the special clays of the region and outlines past and present methods of potting, firing and decoration. In the main part of his book he traces the development of Yixing pottery throughout the period, beginning in the late sixteenth century, discussing the earliest potters by name and then, in turn, those whose work survives. He sets his subject in the context of contemporary patronage - which, in this case, came not from the Imperial Court bu from men of letters, wealthy merchants and the middle-ranking officials - and analyses the influences of Chinese traditions in calligraphy, painting and design. He also pays due attention to such special aspects of Yixing pottery as Gongju teapots, pots decorated in enamel or encased in pewter or other metals, export wares, and apart from teapots, the miscellaneous objects (ranging from utilitarian items, such as flower pots, to articles for the scholar's desk and figurines) which have been produced at the potteries. The illustrations show not only the wares themselves (including specially drawn diagrams of some of the more important standard shapes), but the inscriptions and seals used by the potters and shop marks.
