Kendi: Pouring Vessels in the University of Malaya Collection
Oxford University Press Pte. Ltd. Singapore. 1991, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0195889398). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (without dust jacket - as issued); 19.5 x 26 cm; 0.7 kg; 164 pages with 53 colour and 137 black and white illustrations ; Used with signs of wear on the exterior, namely wear marks and scratches on the front cover, the spine is faded an shows edge wear. Wear marks and scratches on the back cover, which also shows edge wear. Signs of wear on the interior. Good condition overall.; One of the most intriguing of South-East Asian vessels is the kendi, a pot with two openings and no handle. The story of the kendi is closely interwoven with the history of South-East Asia, kendi of pottery and porcelain having been recovered in sites dispersed over a vast area of Island South-East Asia. While comparison of existing vessels indicates some were of native manufacture, being fashioned of porous clay, the majority are non-porous glazed kendi of foreign origin. They formed part of the extensive trade in ceramics that flowed into the region from China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam and which were specially manufactured for export for both household and ceremonial purposes. The kendi in the Muzium Seni Asia, University of Malaya, form the world's largest public collection of kendi. Collectively spanning a period of over 1,000 years, and representing a number of Asian countries, they reflect differences in potting techniques, material, and decoration and show how an ancient form has survived to the present. They thus provide important clues to the patterns of trade and culture as well as the practices and customs that prevailed in the region at different periods. Good/No Jacket.

Honolulu Academy of Arts. 2007, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780937426807). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 22 x 28 cm; 4.1 Kg; 640 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior, namely edge wear and a few scratches and wear marks on the front cover, spine and back cover. Minor bumps on the top of the front cover and back cover. Minor wear marks on the first 15 pages at top, probably due to the bump on the front cover. Remaining interior in very good condition.; Catalogue from the exhibition New Songs on Ancient Tunes: 19th-20th Century Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy from the Richard Fabian Collection, organized by the Honolulu Academy of Arts and presented at the museum from August 30 to October 28, 2007.; This catalogue introduces Chinese painting and calligraphy from a revolutionary period in recent history-the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This period encompasses the fall of the Qing (Ch'ing) dynasty, the establishment of the Republic of China under Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek, and the founding of the People's Republic of China under Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung). Chinese art of these two centuries witnessed a remarkable series of transformations, seen here through the prism of the Richard Fabian Collection, an extraordinary group of over two hundred works, many published here for the first time. Painting and calligraphy are easily the most sophisticated of all Chinese art forms. New Songs on Ancient Tunes focuses on the recent history of these two art forms from several vantage points: the significance of regional centers of artistic production, the impact of political and economic upheaval, the special relationship between painting and calligraphy extending back to antiquity, and the human stories of artists and patrons that bring these remarkable works to life. New Songs on Ancient Tunes explores a broad range of subjects, providing the contemporary viewer with a vehicle to better grasp the larger story of China's classical calligraphy and painting traditions as well as basic aspects of Chinese culture and identity. Conservative tendencies in late Qing painting, the concurrent fascination with archaeology and epigraphy that provoked a revolution in calligraphic theory and practice, the Shanghai School, the so-called Epigraphic School or Movement in northern and southern China, the Lingnan School of Canton, and the experiences of Chinese artists in Europe and Japan in the late Qing and early Republic periods are only a few of this new study's key focal points. LANGE, AMANDA E.
Chinese Export Art at Historic Deerfield
Historic Deerfiel, Inc. Deerfield, Massachusetts. 2005, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0966676947). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21 x 29 cm; 1.3 kg; 284 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket, which shows minor edge wear and minor wear marks and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover of the dust jacket. Signed and inscribed by Lange on title page to previous owner. The remaining interior in very good condition.; This lavishly illustrated, full-color catalogue represents the first survey of Historic Deerfield's Chinese export art collection. Written by Curator of Historic Interiors Amanda E. Lange, Chinese Export Art at Historic Deerfield presents new research on the involvement of rural New England in the China trade and features in-depth object entries. Western merchants have always been attracted to the products of China and to the profits of trade with the Orient. Exotic luxuries such as silks, porcelains, paintings, and fans were eagerly purchased, but tea, above all other commodities, made trade with China imperative. After the late 1750s, all foreign trade activity was confined to a 12-acre section of the city of Canton (Guangzhou). By the time Americans began trading directly with the Chinese, elaborate rules for commerce had developed. The largely self-sufficient Chinese allowed a limited amount of foreign trade, but closely controlled those transactions and the people involved. Chinese Export Art at Historic Deerfield explores the decorative arts and the nature of commerce between the West and China. The catalogue includes three essays: "Of Merchants and Mandarins: An Overview of the China Trade," "The Connecticut River Valley and the China Trade," and "Collecting Chinese Export Art at Historic Deerfield." New information on the involvement of rural New England in the China trade dispels the myth that trade with China was exclusively a coastal phenomenon. The stories of Connecticut River Valley merchants, sailors, captains, and wives involved in ventures to China are explored through advertisements, diaries, letters, and actual objects brought home. The catalogue also features 114 object entries in the categories of graphic arts, silks, metalwares, novelties, and porcelains. Although considered exotic to Western eyes, many of these Chinese products were specifically designed to appeal to foreign tastes. Objects range from porcelain punch bowls to gilded lacquerware boxes. One of the rarest objects presented is an album of 24 hand-painted images of the tea production process, from harvesting the leaves to packing them in boxes. A selected bibliography on Chinese export art and an extensive index round out the book. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

LO, K.S.
The Stonewares of Yixing. From the Ming Period to the Present Day: With an Index of Potters, Artistic Collaborators and Collectors Compiled by Lai Suk Yee and Ip Wing Chi
Sotheby's Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd. 1986, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0856671819). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 20 x 28 cm; 1.3 Kg; 288 pages with 223 illustrations, including 8 in colour.; Used book with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The spine of the dust jacket is faded, as well as the top of the front cover. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Despite its beauty, individuality and variety of design, the red or brown unglazed stoneware produced at Yixing in Jiangsu Province has received less attention than other branches of Chinese ceramic art. The Yixing potters have always specialised in the making of teapots, whose use became widespread during the Ming period as a result of the innovation of making tea from rolled leaves, rather than using it in the fine-ground, powdered form in which it had previously been supplied. From the early sixteenth century onwards until the present day these potters have continually explored a wide diversity of shapes and styles - chiefly the geometric, segmented or naturalistic. Demand for their wares came not only from elsewhere in the East but also from European countries, which imported them and where they were imitated by such potters as Ary de Milde in Holland, The Elers brothers in England and the Meissen master Bottger. In The Stonewares of Yixing, Dr. K.S. Lo has produced a much-needed comprehensive, fully illustrated study of the subject. He describes the special clays of the region and outlines past and present methods of potting, firing and decoration. In the main part of his book he traces the development of Yixing pottery throughout the period, beginning in the late sixteenth century, discussing the earliest potters by name and then, in turn, those whose work survives. He sets his subject in the context of contemporary patronage - which, in this case, came not from the Imperial Court bu from men of letters, wealthy merchants and the middle-ranking officials - and analyses the influences of Chinese traditions in calligraphy, painting and design. He also pays due attention to such special aspects of Yixing pottery as Gongju teapots, pots decorated in enamel or encased in pewter or other metals, export wares, and apart from teapots, the miscellaneous objects (ranging from utilitarian items, such as flower pots, to articles for the scholar's desk and figurines) which have been produced at the potteries. The illustrations show not only the wares themselves (including specially drawn diagrams of some of the more important standard shapes), but the inscriptions and seals used by the potters and shop marks. There is a comprehensive index compiled by Lai Suk and Ip Chang Chi, in English and Chinese, of Yixing potters, their artistic collaborators and collectors, with dates. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

KWOK, PATRICK K.M. (EDITOR); WITH ESSAYS BY: JIAO, TIANLONG; TAO, WANG; WANG, EUGENE Y.; FENG, LI; MILLER, ALISON R.; AND WONG, SARAH
Dialogue with the Ancients: 100 Bronzes of the Shang, Zhou, and Han Dynasties the Shen Zhai Collection
Select Books, Singapore. 2018, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9789811175343). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hard cover (with dust jacket) in slipcase.; 24.5 X 33.5 cm; 3.8 Kg; 422 pages with color illustrations; New. May show signs of handling and shelf wear.; DIALOGUE with THE ANCIENTS showcases 100 ancient Chinese bronzes from the Collection of Shen Zhai, the Studio of Reverence. Built over four decades, the Collection covers almost all types of bronze vessels found in the entire span of Shang, Zhou and Han Dynasties, circa 1600 BC - AD 220. The Catalogue is lavishly illustrated, capturing the beauty of the bronzes, with the majority featured in actual size. Each piece is documented in detail, with reference to comparable specimens and archaeological findings. Uniquely, the Catalogue includes several series of objects in chronological sequence; this enables the reader to study the evolution of form, design and technology throughout the three dynasties. Opening with the Editor's essay on his personal journey in forming the Collection, the volume brings together six thought-provoking essays that contribute refreshingly to the scholarship on ancient Chinese bronzes and early China. Dr Tianlong Jiao places the Shen Zhai Collection within the historical context of bronze collecting and modern Chinese archaeology. Prof Eugene Wang offers a thesis on the Hu vessel as the embodiment of life-affirming energies. Prof Li Feng makes a case for 'archaism' as a divergent tradition in Western Zhou. Prof Allison Miller fleshes out the new hybrid style and iconography of Han bronzes, which gave form to an all-inclusive imperial imagination. Two iconic bronzes with animal motifs stand out: the double-headed owl zun and the gilt-bronze bear figure. Dr Wang Tao delves into the symbolism of the owl in early China, highlighting the significance of the Shen Zhai owl zun, which he traces to the transition from late Shang to early Western Zhou. Ms Sarah Wong examines the Shen Zhai bear and discusses the mythological roots of the bear motif in Han bronzes. DIALOGUE with THE ANCIENTS will serve as a valuable reference book on ancient Chinese bronzes - inviting both specialists and general readers to discover anew the fascinating world of early Chinese civilisation. New/Dust Jacket Included.
