PERRY, LILLA S.
Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Adventures & Studies of a Collector
Charles E. Tuttle Company: Publishers, Rutland, Vermont & Tokyo, Japan. 1971, 5th or later Edition. (ISBN: 0804801061). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (lacks the dust jacket); 25.5 x 26 cm; 0.94 Kg; 158 pages with black and white and colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear, namely marks of an old sticker removed in the front free endpaper. The hardcover cloth shows also signs of a removed old sticker. The interior is in good condition with no writing or highlighting. Good readable copy.; Few civilizations can boast such a great range and quality of artistic achievement as can the Chinese. The Chinese genius has created a vast store of masterpieces in almost every art form, ranging from monumental cave sculptures to the varied products of skilled artisan - generally classified among the "minor arts". It is in this area of the minor arts that the Chinese have particularly distinguished themselves in the more recent past of their long history. The full flowering of all the arts and crafts during this seventeenth and eighteenth centuries represents, in a way, the crowning accomplished of Chinese art, which subsequently entered a period of general decline. In the words of one commentator, as quoted in the present text: "Probably at no time or place in the history of the world there were craftsmen more active, more ingenious, more encouraged than in the China of Ch'ien Lung (1736-95). Manipulating with equal dexterity every kind of material, metals, stone, pottery, wood, horn, leather, amber, lacquer, mother-of-pearl, the output of their myriads of looms, lathes, kilns, and workshops was amazing in quantity, endless in variety..The abundance was so great that after 130 years of the most reckless wear and tear, the mere remnants still gladden an impoverished world with glimpses of the old enchantment.". This, then, is the period that coincided with the introduction and popularization of snuff in China, and consequently with the development of the snuff bottle. All the skill's and ingenuity of the Chinese artisans were lavished upon the production of these tiny bottles, making them pre-eminent representatives of the best in Chinese craftsmanship. The present work is the first full account in any language of this facet of Chinese art. It includes a comprehensive treatment of the origins and development of the snuff bottle in China as well as over 150 actual-size reproductions, the majority in full color. It is a fascinating story by an enthusiastic collector, who, captivated by the beauty and ingenuity found in these bottles, had the interest to delve into historical background, techniques of manufacture, kind and quality of materials, classification and organizations of types, and the like, as well as a delightfully informal style with which to communicate her wide knowledge and enthusiasm to the reader. As such the book is not only and invaluable document for all interest in the history of Chinese art, but also a lucid and fascinating guidebook for the collector, or would-be collector, both of snuff bottles and of other products of Chinese craftsmanship. Fair/No Jacket.

PINS, JACOB; FOREWORD BY KEYES, ROGER
The Japanese Pillar Print: Hashira-E
Robert G Sawers Publishing, London. 1982, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0903697122). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (cloth in slipcase); 25.5 x 35 cm; 2.4 Kg.; 389 pages with mainly black and white illustrations throughout and a few in colour.; LIMITED EDITION OF 1000 COPIES OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 696.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior of the slipcase, and on the hardcover cloth. Minor signs of wear on the interior. Good condition overall.; "This is the first book in any language devoted to those miracles of grace and ingenuity, the hashira-e, or Japanese pillar prints. The pillar print is an improbable shape, half a person's height, yet narrower than the palm of a hand. No culture has developed a print format that looks, to a western eye, so extremely odd and exaggerated, and none of the eccentric European formats ever enjoyed as great and lasting popularity as the Japanese pillar print. There is a tradition in Japan of mounting pictures as long hanging scrolls and displaying them in special alcoves. There is another Japanese tradition of hanging long decorated strips of wood, bamboo, textile, ceramic or paper on hashira buildings, free standing columns or support pillars partially exposed along interior walls. So it was natural and even inevitable perhaps, that woodblock prints would eventually be designed and used as pillar coverings. Yet this idea did not occur to anyone during the first half century of ukiyo-e. In fact, as Jacob Pins shows, the first long narrow prints appeared by accident. Pillar prints were discovered by accident, but htey flourished because they satisfied a hunger for the incomplete, a need for the imagination to dance with the printed images. Most of the books on Japanese woodblock prints provide beautiful illustrations that are an insight into the culture that lies outside their boundaries. But ukiyo-e has been a strangely odd and narrow field of study because many of the specialists who have written about Japanese prints have been sadly limited in their outlook and interests. Jacob Pins, the author of this book, is no narrow expert, although he has chosen to write a study which is strictly limited to a group of very narrow prints. A collector, a fine woodblock artist in his own right, a passionate enthusiast, a lover of his subject, an amateur in the fine, old sense, Mr. Pins was attracted to pillar prints by their beauty, their boundless ingenuity, their inexhaustible interest, their grace, and by great respect for the fellow artists who designed them. This respect broadened into curiosity, then pursuit, and finally into determination to compile an illustrated handbook of the scattered and neglected pillar prints." excerpt from the foreword by Roger Keyes. QIUYU, YU (INTRODUCTION)
'the Homecoming of Chen Yifei' Retrospective Exhibition
Marlborough Fine Art (London) Ltd. 1996, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0900955619). Hardcover. Book, English and Chinese text; Hardcover (colour illustration boards without dust jacket - as issued); 25.9 x 30.6 cm, 1.333 Kg; 180 pages with various colour illustrations; Used book with some shelf wear, and some markings on the back cover, namely a small scuff. Protected with a clearcover; Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, Mr. Chen Yifei was educated and began his oil painting career in Shangai. Having left for the United States in 1980 to further his study of fine art, he has focused his artistic creativity on Chinese subjects. After years of diligent and unremitting hard work, he has attained great success and has become a well-known Chinese painter at home and abroad. The most outstanding characteristics of Chen Yifei’ painting is the tranquility and stillness. His realistic painting style is infused with traditional Chinese aesthetics. In depicting the landscapes, rivers and lakes of southern China, or in portraying a beautiful female figure with vivid expression, the artist’ pursuit is clearly indicated: “To imbue the painting with a Chinese spirit by using western painting techniques”. This exhibition, the first show of Mr. Chen Yifei’ paintings in his home town, comprises a collection of his major works representing different periods of his painting career, from which we can appreciate the full character of his painting. This is of great significance for any contemporary study of the tradition of Chinese oil painting. Good.

RATH, ERIC C.
The Ethos of Noh: Actors and Their Art
Harvard University Asia Center, Cambridge (Massachusetts). 2004, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0674013972). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 23.5 x 16 cm; 0.7 kg; 317 pages with a few colour illustrations.; Used book with almost no signs of wear. As new. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Harvard East Asian Monographs, 232.; Since the inception of the noh drama six centuries ago, actors have resisted the notion that noh rests on natural talent alone. Correct performance, they claim, demands adherence to "traditions". Yet what constitutes noh's traditions and who can claim authority over them have been in dispute throughout noh's history. This book traces how definitions of noh, both as an art and a profession, have changed over time. The author seeks to show that the definition of noh as an art is inseparable from its definition as a profession. Accordingly he analyzes the mechanisms and the agents who have determined what noh meant both as an art and as a profession. The aim of this book is to describe how memories of the past become traditions, as well as the role of these traditions in the institutional development of the noh theater from its beginnings in the fourteenth century through the late tweentieh century. It focuses on the development of the key development of the key traditions that constitute the "ethos of noh", the ideology that empowered certain groups of actors at the expense of others, and how this ethos fostered noh's professionalization - its growth from a loose occupation into a closed, regulated vocation. The author argues that the traditions that form the ethos of noh, such as those surrounding masks and manuscripts, are the key traits that define it as an art. As New/Dust Jacket Included.

NEWLAND, AMY REIGLE; WITH AN ESSAY BY OIKAWA, SHIGERU
Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master: Toyohara Kunichika 1835-1900
Hotei Publishing, Leiden. 1999, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9789074822114). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 29.5 x 29.5 cm; 1.7 kg; 175 pages with colour illustrations.; Minor signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket show signs of wear, namely some minor scratches and wear signs. Interior in very good condition. Very good condition overall.; The Japanese woodblock-print designer Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was active during the second half of the 19th century when Japan experienced immense political, social and cultural changes following the restoration of imperial rule under the Meiji emperor. Many traditional arts were challenged by this new age and the art of the woodblock print (ukiyo-e), unable to continue as it once had, entered into its final period. In the past, scholars and collectors have frequently dismissed ukiyo-e print designers in this area as insignificant, representing the dernise of the ukiyo-e tradition. However, in recent years the prints of a number of these artists have been re- evaluated. Time present and time past: images of a forgotten master, Toyohara Kunichika (1835- 1900) is the first publication in English to treat in detail the life and work of Kunichika, who is considered today one of the last ukiyo-e masters. Kunichika's designs were drawn from established ukiyo-e genres. Ranging from actor prints (yakusha-e), prints of beautiful women (bijinga) to sumo and historical scenes. However, Kunichika was also a man of his time and this is reflected in his use of colour, composition and subjects. In Time present and time past, author Amy Reigle Newland draws on Japanese and Western- language sources to present an overview of Kunichika's life and his prints. She provides a biographical sketch of Kunichika's life, which is followed by sections on the artists prints of beautiful women and actors. In addition the Japanese scholar Shigeru Oikawa presents an essay on Kunichika's fruitful collaboration with the flamboyant painter Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89). The illustration of over 135 prints by Kunichika, an extensive bibliography, appendices containing carvers seals and Kunichika's representative signature forms make Time present and time past an important contribution to our understanding of this little-known Meiji-period print artist. Vessels of Influence: China and the Birth of Porcelain in Medieval and Early Modern Japan
Bloombury Academic, London and New York. 2013, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780715634639). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback.; 13.5 x 21.6 cm; 0.26 Kg; 192 pages with a few black and white illustrations.; First published in 2012 by Bristol Classical Press an imprint of Bloomsbury Academic. Reprinted by Bloomsbury Academic 2013.; Vessels of Influence, while examining in depth the role of Chinese ceramics in Japan, also delves into the meaning, motivation for, and rapid development of Japanese porcelain from many angles, including archaeology, heirloom and documentary evidence. The political and fiscal advantage that one lord found for his domain in creating its own local 'china' is placed in the context of the domestic and international market economy. Through an examination of the role of Chinese products and that of a domesticated 'china' in Japan, a fuller picture of Japan's rich material culture emerges, revealing complex interactions between government, taste-makers, traders, merchants, consumers, imports and new technology. Vessels of Influence also discusses how these interactions have been viewed by historians, and the often heated debates that have occurred as a result. New/No Jacket.

SASANO, MASAYUKI
Early Japanese Sword Guards: Sukashi Tsuba (New Enlarged Edition)
Robert G Sawers Publishing, London. 1974, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 0903697009). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 19 x 26.5 cm.; 1.2 Kg.; 292 pages with black and white illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket has edge wear and a chip on the top of the back cover. Previous owner signature on the rear of the front cover.; The tsuba is a protective guard placed on Japanese swords between the blade and the hilt. It stops the sword of the opponent and thus prevent injuries to the hand. Such at any rate was its purely practical function, but since samurai of old drew swords for combat much less frequently than might be thought, the tsuba inevitably served its true major role while the sword itself was in the scabbard and thrust under the warrior's sash in its customary place. Furthermore, when the sword was in position, the tsuba, at all times the most important part of the blade mounting, was placed at the center of the samurai's body, where it became a vital contributing factor to the dignity of his appearance. The samurai often referred to his sword as his soul, and the tsuba, because of its importance to the sword, naturally become a concentration of many elements. It revealed the standing of the warrior, showed something of his prowess and dignity among other samurai, and frequently told his family background. In addition to being a source of information, the tsuba was a concentration of the aesthetics of the warrior class. Many different patterns symbolizing the ideas, emotions, and hopes of the warriors gradually emerged in their designs, but all of them were essentially and deeply related to the way of the life of the warriors who used and loved them. One major category of tsuba is characterized by inlay and incrustation of gold or silver on iron or copper, but the one discussed in this book is a style employing open-work patterns only. The author had further narrowed his field to open-work tsuba made of iron because he feels that they are most truly Japanese and best reveal the kind of beauty required by the samurai. The major aim of the book is to present clearly and accurately the beauty of open-work tsuba arranged according to design school and historical period. To this end, the author has selected 216 outstanding works, each of which is shown in actual dimensions printed in gravure. Detailed information including school, period, artist, dimensions, etc. are presented too. Fifty especially outstanding tsuba are shown in full-color illustrations. Twenty-one major schools of tsuba production are explained in categories from the standpoints of spiritual and military backgound. As the first research work of its kind, the book is an important source of reference. At the same time, however, it is a revolutionary art book in that it boldly underscores the aesthetics of work in iron and offers many splendid examples of brilliant design. The author's abundant experience and accurate research had resulted in fresh descriptions and comments that surpass anything done in the field before. Furthermore, the photographer's work is technically and artistically excellent. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 23.5 x 31.5 cm; 1.8 kg; 295 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations .; Used with minor signs of wear on the dust jacket, namely minor edge wear and scratches and wear signs. The spine of the dust jacket is slightly faded. Interior in very good condition with minor signs of wear.; Hundreds of beautiful color pictures and recently-discovered, important information give this new study of 19th and 20th century Japanese porcelain a most refreshing approach. Visual comparisons of the major styles can be made even by the beginning student because there are so many fine color pictures of the examples. Kakiemon, Nabeshima, Arita, Hirado and Fukagawa styles of Imari; Kutani; Sutsuma; Kyoto and known craftsmen's works are shown in profusion. The book includes the contents of three newly discovered original design books of Imari porcelain patterns. Identification of many pieces will be possible through comparisons with these designs. The European-influenced styles of the mid-20th century such as Nippon, Noritake, and those pieces marked Occupied Japan are presented as trade items necessary for the changing Japanese economy. Fascinating historical and technical background aids in the recognition of each style. Since research continues to add evidence to changing attributions of origins and artists, the author explains both old and new theories. In what is seen as a quickly growing field of collecting, this book stands at the crossroads of scholarship and popularity. Both groups will find information of keen interest and delight in the gorgeous porcelains of the Japanese artistic and commercial communities. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Obtaining Images: Art, Production and Display in Edo Japan
University of Hawai's Press, Honolulu. 2012, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780824836139). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 20 x 26 cm.; 1.4 Kg.; 384 pages with 245 illustrations, of which 180 in colour. Used with signs of wear on the exterior of the dust jacket. Interior with minor sings of wear. Very good condition overall.; The Edo period (1603-1868) witnessed one of the great flowerings of Japanese art. Towards the mid-seventeenth century, the Japanese states were largely at peace, and rapid urbanization, a rise in literacy and an increase in international contact ensued. The number of those able to purchase luxury goods, or who felt their social position necessitated owning them, soared. Painters and artists flourished and the late seventeenth century also saw a rise in the importance of printmaking. There were dominant styles and trends throughout Japan, but also those peculiar to specific regions, such as the Kanto (Edo) and the Kamigata (Osaka and Kyoto) and, more remotely, Nagasaki. Obtaining Images introduces the reader to important artists and their work, but also to the intellectual issues and concepts surrounding the production, consumption and display of art in Japan in the Edo period. Rather than looking at these through the lens of European art, the book contextualizes the making and use of paintings and prints, elucidating how and why works were commissioned, they were displayed and what special properties were attributed to them. Different imperatives are at work in the art of different traditions, and Obtaining Images firmly anchors the art of Japan of this period in its contemporary context, offering a highly engaging and comprehensive introduction for the student and general reader alike. Hundreds of Sukothai and Lan Na wares of an undreamed quality have been dug up by the hilltribe people. It is now established beyond doubt that Thai ceramics rank among the finest in the world. They are not poor provincial Chinese wares produced by potters who could not afford cobalt to make real blue and white decoration. They are an indigenous art form that reveals the genius and glory of the Thai people in the Golden Age of Ayuthya and Lan Na more surely even than do the Buddhist sculptures. Rosanjin Kitaoji often said "Nothing should be discussed in a generalized manner". And, this is true of his art more than anything else. As a matter of fact, he among his contemporaries, is the one whose art is the most difficult to define. He was a versatile artist who mastered calligraphy, letter engraving, painting, pottery, cooking and architectural design. He achieved a high level and established his own artistic style in each field. His pottery was the greatest in number among his productions and is the most widely known. However the idea that he was just a potter is not right. He was originally a calligrapher and seal-engraver. Here in this book I am trying to trace his artistic life as faithfully as possible in the perspective of history. For that purpose, the first half of this volume is occupied by photographs illustrating his art. In the following sections, I add my criticism and comment." excerpt from the 1972 preface. Near Fine/No Jacket.
