The pillar print is an improbable shape, half a person's height, yet narrower than the palm of a hand. No culture has developed a print format that looks, to a western eye, so extremely odd and exaggerated, and none of the eccentric European formats ever enjoyed as great and lasting popularity as the Japanese pillar print. There is a tradition in Japan of mounting pictures as long hanging scrolls and displaying them in special alcoves. There is another Japanese tradition of hanging long decorated strips of wood, bamboo, textile, ceramic or paper on hashira buildings, free standing columns or support pillars partially exposed along interior walls. So it was natural and even inevitable perhaps, that woodblock prints would eventually be designed and used as pillar coverings. Yet this idea did not occur to anyone during the first half century of ukiyo-e. In fact, as Jacob Pins shows, the first long narrow prints appeared by accident. Pillar prints were discovered by accident, but htey flourished because they satisfied a hunger for the incomplete, a need for the imagination to dance with the printed images. Most of the books on Japanese woodblock prints provide beautiful illustrations that are an insight into the culture that lies outside their boundaries. But ukiyo-e has been a strangely odd and narrow field of study because many of the specialists who have written about Japanese prints have been sadly limited in their outlook and interests. Jacob Pins, the author of this book, is no narrow expert, although he has chosen to write a study which is strictly limited to a group of very narrow prints. Interior in very good condition.; The Japanese woodblock-print designer Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was active during the second half of the 19th century when Japan experienced immense political, social and cultural changes following the restoration of imperial rule under the Meiji emperor. Many traditional arts were challenged by this new age and the art of the woodblock print (ukiyo-e), unable to continue as it once had, entered into its final period. In the past, scholars and collectors have frequently dismissed ukiyo-e print designers in this area as insignificant, representing the dernise of the ukiyo-e tradition. However, in recent years the prints of a number of these artists have been re- evaluated. Time present and time past: images of a forgotten master, Toyohara Kunichika (1835- 1900) is the first publication in English to treat in detail the life and work of Kunichika, who is considered today one of the last ukiyo-e masters. Kunichika's designs were drawn from established ukiyo-e genres. Ranging from actor prints (yakusha-e), prints of beautiful women (bijinga) to sumo and historical scenes. However, Kunichika was also a man of his time and this is reflected in his use of colour, composition and subjects. In Time present and time past, author Amy Reigle Newland draws on Japanese and Western- language sources to present an overview of Kunichika's life and his prints. She provides a biographical sketch of Kunichika's life, which is followed by sections on the artists prints of beautiful women and actors. In addition the Japanese scholar Shigeru Oikawa presents an essay on Kunichika's fruitful collaboration with the flamboyant painter Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89). The illustration of over 135 prints by Kunichika, an extensive bibliography, appendices containing carvers seals and Kunichika's representative signature forms make Time present and time past an important contribution to our understanding of this little-known Meiji-period print artist. Previous owner signature on the rear of the front cover.; The tsuba is a protective guard placed on Japanese swords between the blade and the hilt. It stops the sword of the opponent and thus prevent injuries to the hand. Such at any rate was its purely practical function, but since samurai of old drew swords for combat much less frequently than might be thought, the tsuba inevitably served its true major role while the sword itself was in the scabbard and thrust under the warrior's sash in its customary place. Furthermore, when the sword was in position, the tsuba, at all times the most important part of the blade mounting, was placed at the center of the samurai's body, where it became a vital contributing factor to the dignity of his appearance. The samurai often referred to his sword as his soul, and the tsuba, because of its importance to the sword, naturally become a concentration of many elements. It revealed the standing of the warrior, showed something of his prowess and dignity among other samurai, and frequently told his family background. In addition to being a source of information, the tsuba was a concentration of the aesthetics of the warrior class. Many different patterns symbolizing the ideas, emotions, and hopes of the warriors gradually emerged in their designs, but all of them were essentially and deeply related to the way of the life of the warriors who used and loved them. One major category of tsuba is characterized by inlay and incrustation of gold or silver on iron or copper, but the one discussed in this book is a style employing open-work patterns only. The author had further narrowed his field to open-work tsuba made of iron because he feels that they are most truly Japanese and best reveal the kind of beauty required by the samurai. The major aim of the book is to present clearly and accurately the beauty of open-work tsuba arranged according to design school and historical period. To this end, the author has selected 216 outstanding works, each of which is shown in actual dimensions printed in gravure. Detailed information including school, period, artist, dimensions, etc. are presented too. Fifty especially outstanding tsuba are shown in full-color illustrations. Twenty-one major schools of tsuba production are explained in categories from the standpoints of spiritual and military backgound. As the first research work of its kind, the book is an important source of reference. At the same time, however, it is a revolutionary art book in that it boldly underscores the aesthetics of work in iron and offers many splendid examples of brilliant design. It has grown out of the author's Introduction to Chinese Art, which first appeared in 1961 and was reissued in a revised edition in 1967 under the title of 'A Short History of Chinese Art'. Since then, the pace of archaeological discovery and research has quickened, some of the most sensational finds having been made at the height of the Cultural Revolution in 1966-68, when to the outside world it seemed for a time as if China had turned her back on cultural heritage. These new developments, which have been watched by admirers of Chinese culture with increasing excitement , have necessitated a completely new edition of the book, incorporating material on some of the most important new finds, and a reassessment of well-known material in the light of these discoveries and of the author's own further studies and thoughts. There is a new chapter on the twentieth century, and the number of illustrations has been almost doubled. Unlike some other books on Chinese art, which treat each art form separately, or break off long before the modern period, this book covers all the major arts, and some of the minor ones, in a continuous narrative.
