What is a surimono? These were the small, relatively little known woodblock prints of the Tokugawa era, procuded in smaller numbers and better quality than the ukiyo-e prints as we know them today. Surimono were not sold by the usual art dealers, but privately collected, printed, and distributed to friends ar acquaintances on congratulatory occasions and festivals as remembrances of the particular occasion. The great majority of surimono were designed and given in celebration of the New Year. This beautifully illustrated book, a collector's item, is based on the author's private collection of more than sixty years. It is a unique introduction to ghe background and aesthetic appreciation of the rare and elegant art form. Included in the pages are notes on technique, terminology, surimono collecting and commissioning, as well as biographies of known surimono artists, and a detailed list of surimono catalogs and exhibitions. MICHAELSON, CAROL
Gilded Dragons: Buried Treasures from China's Golden Ages
British Museum Press, London. 1999, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780714114897). Soft cover. Book, English text.; Paperback; 22.5 x 28 cm; 0.858 Kg; With 180 colour and 25 black and white illustrations.; Used book with minor signs of wear on the exterior. The interior is in good condition with minor signs of wear. Some pages are slightly bent on the bottom side.; INCLUDES LOOSE FLYER FROM THE EXHIBITION HELD AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM IN 2000.; Some of the most striking and evocative artistic and archaeological objects ever found in China date from the Tang dynasty, which spanned three centuries from AD 618 to 906. Regarded by the Chinese as one of their most glorious golden ages, when their empire was the richest and most powerful political unit in the world, it was characterized by cultural brilliance, territorial expansion and great prosperity. The Tang capital at Chang'an (present-day Xi'an), marking the eastern end of the Silk Routes, was a wealthy cosmopolitan city, benefiting from the flourishing trade in exotic foods, textiles, furs and fine horses via the oasis towns of the Taklamakan Desert. Persians and Turks, Jews and Muslims all lived and worked in the city of 'Enduring Peace', and the eclectic motifs and technical virtuosity of Tang craftsmen can be seen in the splendid gold and silver vessels and jewellery found buried in local tombs, hoards and crypts. Buddhism was an especially pervasive foreign influence, and many precious ritual objects, donated by generations of the imperial family, were recently discovered in an underground palace below the famous Famensi Buddhist temple. This book presents a fascinating panorama of Chinese life during two 'golden ages': the Tang dynasty and its predecessor the Han, which ruled from the third century BC to the third century AD. Over 120 once-buried treasures - some never before seen outside China - are here illustrated in full colour. Good/No Jacket.

MODY, N.H.
A Collection of Nagasaki Colour Prints and Paintings, Showing the Influence of Chinese and European Art on That of Japan
Charles E. Tuttle Company, Inc. of Rutland, Vermont & Tokyo, Japan. 1979, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in slipcase); 26 x 33 cm; 2.6 Kg; 32 pages with introductory text plus 250 plates with black and white and colour illustrations and caption plus Index of the artists at the end.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The carton slipcase shows sings of wear. Very good condition overall.; Here at long last is a dazzling one-volume reprint of the famous Nagasaki colour prints and paintings so greatly desired by collectors and art lovers, accessible at a fraction of the cost of the rare and extremely expensive originals. Containing 24 full colour plates and 225 black-and-white gravure plates, this is a handsome edition of the coveted two-volume set by N-H.N. Mody. First published in 1939, it contains the finest Nagasaki paintings, prints, maps, and other art objects showing the great influence of China and the West on Japanese art. Having a favourable geographic position, including one of the most picturesque harbours in the world, Nagasaki in the 17th century naturally was a fertile field for a new and exciting school of art. Chinese painters, lured to exotic Nagasaki, took with them and unusual kind of painting with a delicate technique of realistic tendency", as noted in the Index of Japanese Painters (Tuttle, 1958). Under this influence the Nagasaki school was born. But European influences were also at work in the 17th and 18th centuries, and these further enhanced the realistic tendency of the school. It follows that these prints, so excellent in themselves, are also of vast historical importance. Subjects of the early Nagasaki paintings were mostly religious in nature, and at first the Jesuits and other foreign missionaries were well treated. But the authorities were suspicious of anything connected with the Christian religion, and eventually the missionaries were accused of interfering in the internal affairs of the country. Finally the Shogunate termed them a danger to the country and expelled them, a ban exemplified by the notice-board (Plate 203) which prohibited Christianity and invited the exposure of Christians by informers. The Dutch and Chinese, however, were allowed to stay in Nagasaki; thus the school was able to continue and even thrive. The rarity and artistic significance of the unusual collection is highlighted by the fact that during the eradication of Japanese Christians, paintings in old suffered a similar eclipse. Authorities generally agree that "no Japanese oil painting executed between 1650 and 1850 is know to have survived, the art of oil painting was not revived until the end of the 18th century.". The paintings in this brilliant collection might be termed the result of a single artistic creation - that of the Chinese and Japanese. There can be no doubt that the Nagasaki school made an invaluable contribution to the technical development of Japanese painting - transforming its techniques until the art became a true expression of native Japanese genius. Modern Masters of Kyoto: The Transformation of Japanese Painting Traditions. Nihonga from the Griffith and Patricia Way Collection
Seattle Art Museum. 1999, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9780932216533). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 23.5 x 31.5 cm.; 2 Kg.; 333 pages with colour illustrations throughout. Used with signs of wear on the exterior of the dust jacket. Interior with minor sings of wear. Very good condition overall.; Catalogue from the exhibition Modern Masters of Kyoto: Nihonga from the Griffith and Patricia Way Collection, organized by the Seatlle Art Museum, held at Seattle Asian Art Museum, August 19, 1999 to February 13, 2000 and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, April 13 - July 31, 2000.; Modern Japanese painting executed in traditional media and formats, or nihonga, developed in the late nineteenth century as artists struggled to preserve cultural continuity in their art while searching for creative expressions to reflect Japan's new identity as a modern nation. In addition, the nihonga movement served to distinguish traditional art from Western-style oil painting. In the 1880s and following decades, as various national forums fro competitive exhibition developed, Tokyo and Kyoto emerged as strong artistic centers, each characterized by its own distinct historical and cultural background. Modern Masters of Kyoto presents more than eighty examples of Kyoto nohonga - hanging scrolls, screens, and an album - dating from 1860s to the 1940s. Featuring two exceptionally original artists, Tsuji Kako (1870-1931) and his pupil Tomita Keisen (1879-1936), the volume includes works by his predecessors, their contemporaries, and their successors. Collectively, their works demonstrate the evolution of Kyoto nihonga in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book introduces Western readers to a range of Kyoto artists from the most famous to the talented but relatively unknown. Their often visually stunning paintings provide a window from which to glimpse both the past and modern in Japanese art. In the early development of nihonga, Kyoto artists incorporated some elements of Western art, but they were more anchored in tradition than artists in Tokyo. The Kyoto masters achieved true brilliance after the turn of the twentieth century. Inspired by the modern concept of individualism and influenced at times by knowledge of compemporary Western art, Kyoto nihonga artists in the Taisho period (1912-26) created strikingly diverse and original expressions with fresh subjects, a daring use of color, and experimental compositions. ADRIAN M. JOSEPH, HUGH M. MOSS AND S.J.FLEMING
Chinese Pottery Burial Objects of the Sui and T'Ang Dynasties
Hugh M.Moss Ltd. London. 1970, 1st Edition. Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 20 x 25.5 cm; 0.376 Kg; 80 pages with black and white illustrations; Signs of wear in the back cover, front cover and spine. Mark on the cover, spine and back cover due to the removal of an old sticker. No highlighting or writing is text. Good readable copy.; Catalogue from the exhibition Chinese Pottery Burial Objects of the Sui and T'ang Dynasties with special reference to the scientific testing of pottery wares, and the works of the forger. Arranged in conjunction with the Research Laboratory for Archaeology, Oxford.; "When one thinks of T'ang ceramics it is not the wares which were in everyday life use during the period which spring to mind, but the prancing horses and camels, and the dancers and musicians, together with the exotic, partially glazed bowls, ewers and vases. These are the wares recovered from tombs when the railways ploughed their way across China. The point which has never been stressed strongly enough is that they were essentially burial objects and not items of everyday use. It is conjectural whether these vessels bore any relationship to the secular wares in use at the time-any more than did the animals, with their strikingly weird glazes and pigments, resemble their living counterparts. The wares of Yueh and Hsing, in use at the time, were much more suitable for household use by virtue of their shapes and impervious bodies (achieved by firing at high temperatures) than were the partially glazed burial obejcts. These burial wares do not form any sort of link with the wares of the Sung, which were to follow, as do the Yueh and Hsing pieces; and so the burial objects of the T'ang may perhaps be considered as an art form with less domestic and more ritual significance than is normally associated with ceramics. Because of this, far more emotive creativeness was entailed in their manufacture and these intense feelings are able to reach out over the centuries to excite a kind of appreciation today which is not aroused by any type of pottery. With this in mind, this exhibition has been assembled to attempt to crystallize and enhance the spiritual aura which surrounds its contents." excerpt from the introduction by Adrian M. Joseph and Hugh M. Moss, June, 1970. Fair/No Jacket.

MURASE, MIYEKO
Masterpieces of Japanese Screen Painting
George Blazier, New York. 1990, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0807612308). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 37 x 32.5 cm; 2.8 Kg; 232 pages with 124 pages of colour illustrations and 13 colour illustrated fold outs.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The word "Japanese" on the front cover is slightly faded. Very good condition overall.; Masterpieces of Japanese Screen Painting unites thirty-seven extraordinary Japanese screens in American collections. Together they represent the most important artists and schools of screen painting, and provide a balanced overview of the formats and techniques used and the wide range of subjects depicted. The works in this volume were created during the greatest eras of screen painting: The Muromachi period (1392 - 1573), when monochromatic ink painting came to be regarded as the only medium worthy of an important artist; the Momoymama period (1573 - 1615), the "golden age" of screen painting; and the Edo period (1615-1868), one of the most artistically prolific eras in history. In her introduction and Commentaries on each screen, Dr. Miyeko Murase explores the functional and decorative roles that screens, which had originated in China, established in Japan. Screens of varying sizes had always been traditional features of domestic design, as they were used to create private spaces in the typical Japanese loft-like interior. Later, feudal lords, eager to decorate their castles in sumptuous manner that would publicly convey their wealth, commissioned artists to paint on a large scale with brilliant colors, as well as with generous amounts of gold and silver leaf. Dr. Murase also discusses the wide range of images depicted. Artists represented events of famous festivals, scenes from the ancient Confucian theme of the "Four Gentlemanly Accomplishments" and episodes from the Tale of Genji, one of the best loved stories in Japanese literature. Yet the most popular subjects remained well within Japanese tradition: images of nature, landscapes, flowers and birds and other wild animals. This volume's oversized format was specially designed to suit the impressive size and magnitude of the screens. Thirteen screens are reproduced on gatefold pages, which mesure over four feet wide (121.92 cm) when fully opened. Several screens are published here for the first time; all are reproduced in color, with the gold carefully printed, in order to capture their glowing, glorious hues. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

The hardcover cloth shows also signs of a removed old sticker. The interior is in good condition with no writing or highlighting. Good readable copy.; Few civilizations can boast such a great range and quality of artistic achievement as can the Chinese. The Chinese genius has created a vast store of masterpieces in almost every art form, ranging from monumental cave sculptures to the varied products of skilled artisan - generally classified among the "minor arts". It is in this area of the minor arts that the Chinese have particularly distinguished themselves in the more recent past of their long history. The full flowering of all the arts and crafts during this seventeenth and eighteenth centuries represents, in a way, the crowning accomplished of Chinese art, which subsequently entered a period of general decline. In the words of one commentator, as quoted in the present text: "Probably at no time or place in the history of the world there were craftsmen more active, more ingenious, more encouraged than in the China of Ch'ien Lung (1736-95). Manipulating with equal dexterity every kind of material, metals, stone, pottery, wood, horn, leather, amber, lacquer, mother-of-pearl, the output of their myriads of looms, lathes, kilns, and workshops was amazing in quantity, endless in variety..The abundance was so great that after 130 years of the most reckless wear and tear, the mere remnants still gladden an impoverished world with glimpses of the old enchantment.". This, then, is the period that coincided with the introduction and popularization of snuff in China, and consequently with the development of the snuff bottle. All the skill's and ingenuity of the Chinese artisans were lavished upon the production of these tiny bottles, making them pre-eminent representatives of the best in Chinese craftsmanship. The present work is the first full account in any language of this facet of Chinese art. It includes a comprehensive treatment of the origins and development of the snuff bottle in China as well as over 150 actual-size reproductions, the majority in full color. It is a fascinating story by an enthusiastic collector, who, captivated by the beauty and ingenuity found in these bottles, had the interest to delve into historical background, techniques of manufacture, kind and quality of materials, classification and organizations of types, and the like, as well as a delightfully informal style with which to communicate her wide knowledge and enthusiasm to the reader. As such the book is not only and invaluable document for all interest in the history of Chinese art, but also a lucid and fascinating guidebook for the collector, or would-be collector, both of snuff bottles and of other products of Chinese craftsmanship. This is the only guide available that provides a much-needed reference to identifying and valuing antiques from the Far East for both the newcomer and more experienced collector. Over 3,500 items of popular Chinese and Japanese antiques such as blue and white gingers jars, richly carved lacquer boxes and jade jewellery are illustrated and described, with over 800 colour photographs, each with and up-to date price guide. The book is divided by type of ware (e.g. furniture, ceramics, metalware) and then subdivided by country for ease of reference. Each section contains information boxes with practical guidance on collecting each subject, what to be aware of when starting out, how to spot fakes, and hints on how to avoid making expensive mistakes. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
