GERRITSEN, ANNE AND RIELLO, GIORGIO (EDITORS)
The Global Lives of Things: The Material Culture of Connections in the Early Modern World
Routledge, Oxon. 2016. (ISBN: 9781183776753). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 16 x 23.5 cm; 0.480 Kg; 266 pages with 4 black-and-white illustrations; New book. May show signs of shelf wear.; The Global Lives of Things considers the ways in which 'things', ranging from commodities to works of art and precious materials, participated in the shaping of global connections in the period 1400-1800. By focusing on the material exchange between Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia, this volume traces the movements of objects through human networks of commerce, colonialism and consumption. It argues that material objects mediated between the forces of global economic exchange and the constantly changing identities of individuals, as they were drawn into global circuits. It proposes a reconceptualization of early modern global history in the light of its material culture by asking the question: what can we learn about the early modern world by studying its objects? This exciting new collection draws together the latest scholarship in the study of material culture and offers students a critique and explanation of the notion of commodity and a reinterpretation of the meaning of exchange. It engages with the concepts of 'proto-globalization', 'the first global age' and 'commodities/consumption'. Divided into three parts, the volume considers in Part One, Objects of Global Knowledge, in Part Two, Objects of Global Connections, and finally, in Part Three, Objects of Global Consumption. The collection concludes with afterwords from three of the leading historians in the field, Maxine Berg, Suraiya Faroqhi and Paula Findlen, who offer their critical view of the methodologies and themes considered in the book and place its arguments within the wider field of scholarship. Extensively illustrated, and with chapters examining case studies from Northern Europe to China and Australia, this book will be essential reading for students of global history. New/No Jacket.

BAATSCH, HENRI-ALEXIS
Hokusai: A Life in Drawing
Thames & Hudson. 2016. (ISBN: 9780500094037). Hardcover. Book, English text, Hardcover in printed cloth with closing ribbon (without dust jacket as issued), 16.8 x 23.2 cm, 0.850 Kg, 224 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear.; A beautifully illustrated introduction to Katsushika Hokusai, the most prolific artist of Japan's Edo period, and master of ukiyo-e - 'images of the floating world'. Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was the most prolific and diverse artist of Japan's Edo period, with a body of work reputed to include more than 30,000 drawings, paintings and prints. This book traces the career of this child from a working-class district of old Tokyo, then known as Edo, evoking the special atmosphere of this great city and of Japanese life, when Japan - closed to foreigners - developed in a vacuum a powerfully original culture. Its urban centres enjoyed increasing wealth and stability, leading to a flourishing culture of art and pleasure-seeking. Woodblock prints of the genre known as ukiyo-e - 'images of the floating world' - became defining images of the age. Hokusai became one of the great masters of the woodcut, this 'brush gone wild', as he called himself, being rediscovered by the Impressionists and aesthetes at the end of the nineteenth century. His works range from portraits of popular actors and courtesans to landscapes and seascapes, including his celebrated 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji', and from cleverly observed scenes of everyday life to the erotic prints known as shunga. While his prints had a huge influence on the course of Western art, it is equally true that he himself was influenced by European painting, embracing techniques such as perspective and adapting them to suit Japanese tastes. He remains one of the greatest and --thanks to his personality - one of the most attractive figures of world art. Very Good/No Jacket.

BARRETO, LUÍS FILIPE (ED.)
Tomás Pereira (1646 - 1708): A Jesuit in Kangxi's China
Centro Cientifíco e Cultural de Macau, Portugal. 2009. (ISBN: 9789728586133). Hardcover. Book, English and Portuguese text; Hardcover; 24 x 30.5 cm; 1.155 Kg; 148 pages with colour illustrations.; Limited edition of 750 copies.; As new with signs of shelf wear. Our logo is glued to the front free endpaper.; Exhibition Catalogue.; This catalogue results from a long period of research about the life of the Portuguese Jesuit Tomás Pereira, who was, until recently, very little known by the academic community and almost anonymous in the collective memory. The point of departure for this investigation project was Tomás Pereira's diary, Diário de 1689, which was published for the first time in 1961. From then onwards, the Jesuit priest remained relatively forgotten. From 2006 until 2008, when the results were presented at an international colloquium organised by the Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau, there was a systematic search for new documents relating to his life, with new chronological facts being established. This gave origin to the exhibition and subsequent catalogue, which not only explains the life of Tomás Pereira through three main articles - his life in Portugal, his life in India, and his life in emperor Kangxi's China - but is also accompanied by a catalogue of objects and documents that relate to his character and the places where he had his missions. With 37 catalogue entries, each with the respective image and caption, it is a fundamental book for the understanding of the general context of the life of the Jesuits in Europe, India and China. BARTHOLOMEW, TERESE TSE
Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art
The Asian Art Museum. 2006, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0939117363). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 23.7 x 31.2 cm; 2.279 Kg; 352 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. Minor signs of wear on the interior.; Can decorative objects increase one's wealth, happiness, or longevity? Traditionally, many Chinese have believed that they could, provided they include the appropriate auspicious symbols. In Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art, Terese Tse Bartholomew, culminating decades of research, has provided a thorough guide to such symbols. Auspicious symbols in Chinese art are often in the form of rebuses, visual puns. Because many words in Chinese share the same pronunciation, there is a wealth of opportunities for such punning, and over the centuries many rebuses have developed established meanings. Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art brings a systematic approach to the cataloguing of such hidden meanings. The book is divided into ten chapters, guided by the three Star Gods, Fu (blessings, happiness), Lu (wealth, rewards) and Shou (longevity). Fu governs chapters one through three, on blessings, marriage, and children. Lu governs chapters four, five, and six, on passing exams, gaining official rank, and obtaining wealth. Shou governs chapter seven, on longevity. Three additional chapters survey motifs for peace, wish-granting, and festivals. Richly illustrated with photos of art objects and with many original illustrations by the author and Mulan Bartholomew, and enhanced with extensive bilingual indexes and other supporting materials, this book is an essential reference for anyone interested in exploring Chinese Art and culture. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

LUZZATTO-BILITZ, OSCAR
Antique Jade
Casell Publishers, London. 1987. (ISBN: 0304321559). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 19 x 13 cm; 0.230 kg; 155 pages with colour illustrations.; Used book with minor signs of wear. The interior is in good condition, except for minor yellowing on the front and free endpaper.; The word 'jade' conjures up an image of strange carvings in a smooth green stone. In fact jade comes in many different colours, but all the various types have a delicate beauty which has always appealed to connoisseur and craftsman alike. In China jade was being carved as far back as Neolithic times, even before the discoveries of metal. To cut and shape such a hard material using only bone or bamboo with an abrasive must have demanded extraordinary patience. No wonder the Chinese regarded it as more precious than gold. The objects made were often symbolic, since jade was thought to have magical properties, and shapes represent deities such as the Earth or the Sun. Owing to the hardness of jade it was frequently used to make knives, daggers and small axes, generally with carved decoration. Later, cups and vases, sometimes of immense size, were laboriously hollowed out, and in contrast, in the 17th century when snuff became fashionable, tiny snuff bottles appeared. Figures of animals and mythical beasts were popular, and there are many finely observed tortoises, horses and birds. The illustrations include examples from all these periods and the expert text, by Oscar Luzzatto-Blitz, gives a fascinating account of the background of jade carving, not only in China but also in Pre-Columbian America and New Zealand. LUZZATO-BILITZ, OSCAR
Oriental Lacquer
The Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited, Middlesex, England. 1969. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 24 x 19.5 cm; 0.43 Kg; 158 pages with 73 colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear on the interior and exterior. Signs of wear on the dust jacket which has tears and scuffs. The interior is in good condition with minor yellowing.; Lacquer is the resin of a tree which grows in China and Japan. The techniques of working the resin is delicate and slow: sometimes as many as 200 or 300 coats may be needed, and infinite patience is required as each layer must dry before the next is applied. The author describes the different techniques and styles that have evolved from antiquity to modern times, ranging from simple lotus flower bowls to deeply carved boxes and ornately painted wardrobes. The incredible precision of the workmanship is clearly shown in the illustrations, and a description of each object is given in the accompanying notes. It is when we linger over the details that we really appreciate the refinement of this exquisite art. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

BROWN, ROXANNA M.
The Ceramics of South-East Asia: Their Dating and Identification
Oxford University Press, Singapore. 1988, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 0195888898). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21 x 28 cm; 1.333 kg; 272 pages including 69 figures, 6 maps, 274 black-and-white illustrations and 207 colour illustrations.; Used book in very good condition. Minor signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior as new.; When the first edition of this book was published in 1977, it was hoped that it would play a part in reviving a serious interest in the ceramics of South-East Asia. Happily, this proved to be the case: books have subsequently appeared in English devoted to Khmer, Vietnamese, Sukhotai/Sawankhlalok, and northern Thai wares, and in Japanese and Thai, to Thai ceramics generally; a bibliography of works on old glazed Burmese ceramics is growing; dozens of articles have been published on various aspects of new research; and underwater archaeology concentrating on shiwrecks containing ceramics has flourished. Recent progress in original research and discovery can be summarized into four areas of major importance: first, the identification of Guangdong ceramics as the missing link between the wares of China and those of both Vietnam and Kampuchea; secondly, the unexpected discovery of burial sites in the hills of western Thailand, which contained examples of northern Thai wares rarely seen previously; thirdly, the discovery of Burmese glazed ceramics; and finally, new findings from excavations at the Sawankhalok klin site. In the second edition of the Ceramics of South-East Asia, the author takes into full account the developments in the last decade to bring her original study up to date, and also takes the opportunity to revise the text where this seemed necessary. In addition, a large number of new illustrations, both in colour and black and white, have been included, together with new line drawings and maps. The outcome is virtually a new book, completely reset and illustrated. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

BUSSAGLI, MARIO
Chinese Bronzes
Casell Publishers, London. 1987. (ISBN: 0304321575). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 13 x 19 cm; 0.228 kg; 153 pages with colour illustrations.; Used book with minor signs of wear.; The origins of bronze-working in China are mysterious and deeply rooted in ancient Chinese myths. Metallurgy in all its forms seemed miraculous to the ordinary man, and every object, sword or vessel was thought to possess a spirit of its own. Those who worked with metals seemed to be wizards with supernatural powers, all the more so because the melting operation was preceded, accompanied and followed by religious ceremonies, exorcism and magic rites. M. Bussagli describes the background to the production of Chinese bronzes in fascinating detail, and explains the significance of the different types of ritual vessel and the symbolism of the stylized decoration. The fine illustrations include objects from the Shang, Chou, Han and T'ang periods, and each described fully in the accompanying notes. Good/No Jacket.

CHU, ARTHUR; CHU, GRACE
Oriental Cloisonné and Other Enamels: A Guide to Collecting and Repairing
Crown Publishers, Inc. New York. 1975, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0517523523). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 19 x 26 cm; 0.6 Kg; 180 pages with black and white and colour illustrations throughout.; Used book with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket. The interior is in good condition. Minor yellowing on the outside text block.; Cloisonné has long attracted the discriminating collector, and this fine book by Arthur and Grace Chu is a much-needed and useful addition to the collector bookshelf. This book not only explains the backgrounds and sources of this colorful ware, the methods of manufacture, and the criteria to be aware of in evaluating the workmanship, but also includes a clear explanation of the meaning of various decorative motifs, which are often puzzling to Westerners. More than 50 detailed drawings will help the collector to identify all the most popular motifs. Most cloisonné from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries is safely ensconced in museums, but today's collector will find available a wide variety of handsome specimens from the nineteenth and twenty centuries. According to Mr. and Mrs. Chu, the cloisonné articles now being produced in China, Japan, and Taiwan can also be an excellent investment - for anyone who knows how to judge the quality of a piece; this book will give even the beginning collector the necessary information. Shown here in some 200 black-and-white photographs and 17 colour plates are cloisonné articles of every kind and shape - from miniature in size to the very large, from old to fairly new, from the utilitarian to the purely decorative. A value guide provides reliable tips on relative prices according to age, workmanship, and other factors. Since the price for good Oriental cloisonné and enamelwork has increased fivefold or more in the last few years and continues to soar, the wise collector will want to avail himself of this very readable book, which is enriched by enlightening anecdotes of the author's own collecting adventures. Finally, the authors have provided practical, easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions for repairing damaged but worthwhile pieces that can be bought quite cheaply. Repairs made by following these directions are virtually unnoticeable and will greatly increase the value of such pieces. The repair instructions alone will repay the collector the cost of this book many times over. In short, this is a "must" book for all readers interested in orientalia, for collectors of cloisonné and enamels, for libraries, dealers in antiques and collectibles, and for museums. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Paintings of the China Trade: The Sze Yuan Tang Collection of Historic Paintings
Hong Kong Maritime Museum. 2013, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9789881823366). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 28 x 27 cm; 1 Kg; 200 pages with 177 colour illustrations; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Very good condition overall.; The A.J. Hardy collection (also also known as the Sze Yuan Tang Collection) of paintings offers a unique insight into the colourful history of maritime trade between China and the West. These paintings present a vivid and detailed view of the ports involved in the trade. Some were "Treaty ports" open to international commerce; others provided essential provisions and fresh water, or simply refuge from storms and adverse winds. Also included are paintings protraying the individuals who concluded the trade, both Chinese and Western; the ships themselves, many of them representing the great age of sail; diplomatic ventures intended to facilitate trade; and other scenes of Chinese life at the time. Some were painted by Westerners, but most were executed by Chinese 'export' artists - skilled painters who developed a Westernised style for the merchants and ships' officers who crossed the oceans to trade with China. LION-GOLDSMITH, DAISY AND MOREAU-GOBARD, JEAN-CLAUDE; WITH A FOREWORD BY SAVAGE, GEORGE
Chinese Art: Bronzes, Jades, Sculptures, Ceramics (Volume One)
Phaidon Press Ltd, London. 1980, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 0714821349). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 263 pages with 198 illustrations, including 65 in colour; 21 x 27 cm; 1.283 Kg; Used book with signs of wear in the dustjacket. Some yellowing in the interior and Ex-libris stamped on front free endpaper. Protected with a clearcover; The strangeness of Chinese art is largely a myth. It is no more difficult to understand and appreciate than that of the early civilizations of Europe and the Middle East, once the essential facts have been grasped; and it is characterized as much by its humorous observation as by its spiritual qualities. The authors here present an introduction to Chinese art, based on a representative selection of masterpieces covering a period of approximately four thousand years. The reproductions are accompanied by scholarly commentary on each of the four categories of medium and a detailed description of every object illustrated. A chronological table of the Chinese dynasties and a bibliography are provided at the end. Apart from their intrinsic beauty, these works of art constitute the best bridge to foreigners trying to understand China. This volume updates the first edition, published twenty years ago, and, by virtue of its new format, will be accessible to a wider audience. It will be invaluable to the general reader, and stimulating also to those who are on more familiar territory. Good/Dust Jacket Included.
